I wish I could do this but with me just having a septoplasty less than 48 hours ago I’m not allowed to lie flat or lean forward so I’m now sat cross legged on the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this floor with support from the out of order vending machine behind my back and a wall to my left to try and sleep Always take photos. I had a walloping of hives last year – no idea what the cause was – and of course by the time you get to see a Dr the welts have gone down. Showed him photos, he agreed something was up, prescribed super-anti-histamine, win. I’m sure we all have those stories about something the kids just admitted or slipped out that kind of surprised us. I’ve got several but the one I was just thinking about this morning was quite a while ago when I was teaching a bunch of ninth graders about thermal energy. I explained that things don’t get cold they just get less hot, and joked that next time their parents ask them to put something in the fridge to get cold say “no, you mean put it in the fridge to make it less hot.” The next day some girl came in and said she did exactly that, but her mom “got mad at her sass and whooped her until she said it was getting cold.” The look on her face told me she was telling the truth. Now I’m a little more careful about telling the kids to go home and try something with their parents. These are nowhere near the worst situations I’ve encountered, just two things that stuck with me.

Early in my career, probably my first year teaching, I made an analogy for something I’ve long forgotten, but I said “like when you blow out candles on your birthday cake” and a boy in the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this front just said “No ma’am, I’ve never had a birthday cake”. He then explained that his single diabetic mom couldn’t afford birthday parties when there’s nine kids in a 2 bedroom single wide and they’re lucky they can pay rent. That was memorable because it was the first time my heart really broke for a kid. And in case you’re wondering, I made note of his birthday and “the class” (me) got him a cake, candles and all. More recently, I had a kid that was one of a few that liked to eat lunch in my room. They asked me for a sandwich bag, and as I was getting one for him, I saw him cutting his pathetic school lunch sandwich in half. I probably said something along the lines of “saving some for later?” and found out that he was saving the other half for before bed so he didn’t have to sleep hungry since there was no food at the house. I’ve had plenty of food-insecure kids, homeless kids, etc, but I think it was the nonchalant, matter-of-fact way that he said that – as if this happens to everybody – that made my heart sink. From that point forward I had the most outrageous collection of ‘snacks’ in my room.
As a formerly poor student, I’m just here to say thanks for looking out for those kids. Those of us who went into education as adults can spot the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this hungry signs a mile away (and as a result, go out of our way to supply what we can), but it’s not often, in my experience, that teachers who haven’t been told or experienced this organically realize that their kids might be having problems. I grew up with limited resources, but never hungry. But some of my friend s did. You’re right that many teachers are rather oblivious, at least as starting teachers. It’s something “teacher school” doesn’t really go over, at least when I went. I was actually just thinking I need to get better about having food and water in my room. My principal is not a fan of it, but I have a back storage room since I’m a science teacher I’ll just haul stuff into there. I have a lot of kids ask for food and I usually just say no, but I think the other day I actually caught wind of a girl saying that somebody shut off the water at her house and at one point this year I had to buy a kid stuff out of the vending machine because his mom “forgot to pick up their bottled water for the week.” Science teacher here, too! Since that time, my school has actually gotten really good about having snacks for food-insecure kids in guidance (partnership with the local food bank), plus free breakfast for all, so I don’t keep anything in my room now. But I donate to the food bank so that I’m still helping 🙂

Description for Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt
I’m a 1-on-1 para in my first year, and my student was in a teacher’s class first semester where the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this teacher always handed out snacks. I was surprised she did it every day because it took a good half of the class time away from teaching the topic at hand. I mentioned it to one of the other Paras, asking why the teacher didn’t seem to care about how little time she had left for the subject, and the para told me 3 of her students in this particular class are in poverty and often only eat at school (free breakfast and free lunches). She feeds the entire class 3-4 snacks and watches two of these kids proceed to put 2-3 of them in their backpacks to take home, either for themselves or their family. Broke my freaking heart!
She saw the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this kids stashing food like this at the Halloween party and decided to carry on like this because she didn’t want the kids to go hungry. She keeps Costco sized boxes of snacks in her classroom so she has enough to do this every day. See if there’s a way you can start a food pantry. We used to have backpacks that we would fill with easy to make food for those kids who didn’t have food at home. They just had to pick it up after school and bring the backpack back the next day. We had Mac n Cheese, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, bread, crackers, canned soup/stew, etc. We worked with the businesses around the school and most was donated. Make sure to keep snacks in a bin or other storage that’s pest proof. I’m not a teacher but I’m admin for a program for high school students, I have staff that work in the schools and bring snacks. We’ve had issues with mice. Storage bins help with portability as well as mice proofing. One of my favorite parts of my job is getting snacks for the students This breaks my heart cause I don’t have the money to afford to kit out my room with snacks and extra necessities aside from making sure I have feminine products stocked (I keep half a box’s worth just in case)
I totally get that! At my school, several teachers/counselor arranged to with the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this local foodbank supply snacks that are kept in a central location. They also organized a clothing closet. More recently another teacher is getting period products through donations. I wish I could say I had a hand in any of that but it never crossed my mind. Maybe it could happen at your school? I had a student last year who would come to my room during my planning sometimes and would talk about what was going on in her life. She was waiting for placement in a new foster home and was living in a shelter at the time and wasn’t getting enough food. She didn’t like the food they provided at the shelter and at school, her classmates would steal her lunch. She’d use whatever money she could scrape together to buy snacks, only for them to get stolen at school. I wanted to give her snacks for while she was at the shelter, but she said that other kids there would go into her backpack while she slept and steal any food she had.
I hope she’s doing well, the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this poor kid. That’s quite a lot to endure. The kids that grow up hopping from one foster home to the next break my heart. Good on you! I did the same to thing for a while until some kids broke into my office and stole all the snacks I had. I only had one kid ever steal boxes of food, and I caught him and wrote him up. The main problem was once you give a snack to one kid then half the class wants snacks whether they “need” them or not – so sharing food had to be discreet. I couldn’t possibly afford snacks for all my kids every day! The need was great enough that our school started a partnership with the local food bank, and now students can stop by guidance (or ask to go) if they need something to hold them over. Some kids also get bags of food on Fridays to take home with them. We’ve also made breakfast free to everyone, which was not a thing before. The number of hungry kids I get in the classroom has dropped dramatically because of this! So now I donate $ to the food bank instead of purchasing and distributing myself. It’s a much better arrangement!
Our local food bank stuffs bags of food into kids’ backpacks on Fridays. The kids/families don’t have to ask for help – the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this food just shows up, like magic (the magic is that staff give a list of names to the nonprofit). It works really well. No stigma. That’s incredible! You sound like you would make an amazing CIS officer. Your district is very lucky to have you! Me: is there no food in the house? She’s always hungry when she shows up and has asked to bring snacks home with her. Coworker: no, there’s lots of food in the house. It’s just that her mom is too literal with the portion sizes, and worries about her getting fat. I’m not a teacher or parent, I just lurk in this sub because I think you are so important to our kids future. I’m a 50 y/o woman that thinks you are amazing and I want you to know that you are appreciated. I don’t know how you deal with parents and the crazy programs they make you teach. You are appreciated and I am always supportive of teachers unions. You do inspire your kids. One of mine once told me that no one at his home loved him. I guess in the grand scheme of things, it’s not as awful as some of the other things I’ve seen/heard, but it’s haunted me ever since. He’s a great kid — smart, sweet, sunny disposition. But he feels like no one loves him, and that’s such a dreadfully lonely place to be.
On a brighter note, my own son once, while I was quizzing him for a test, responded to “What is carbon dioxide?” with “slightly used air.” I lost it. I was a new teacher. I had a student who was very smart, didn’t have any real discipline problems, and was a happy, outgoing kid. He was in junior high. However, he would often talk in a baby voice or make weird baby noises in class. He did it as a way to try to be a class clown. It wasn’t really a disturbance so much as something that became annoying as the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this year progressed. At parent teacher conferences with him and his mom, I mentioned the baby noises in passing saying something along the lines of its the only thing, and it’s a small issue. The mother, however, flipped on her son. The son started to cry and visibly started to shake. He looked so scared. She wrapped his arm and stormed out. I was so scared for him but didn’t know what to do. After that, he turned into a very shy kid in my class. He never made any baby noises or talked like a baby again, but his spirit was broken. He wasn’t the same. I apologized to him immediately, but for the rest of the school year, he never looked me in the eyes.
From that experience, I am very careful of what I say to parents. It’s been over 30 years, and I still think of that kid every single parent/teacher conference. I’ve had those and I sometimes find it worse than the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this parents who immediately blame you, the teacher, for the issues. Those I feel like I can handle, but the parents who immediately go after the kid for something I said? Nope. There‘s also the parents I occasionally deal with who do nothing but trash talk their generally well-behaved and nice kids. For me, it’s ten times more heartbreaking to hear “well, you don’t live with Student” or “Student’s too dumb to be getting good grades in your class” than “Student would never toss a desk and if they did it was your fault.” I’m a therapist in an agency that is wildly strengths-based. We start every meeting by talking about the youth’s strengths. Some parents literally cannot say anything nice about their own child, and that breaks my heart. I was raised by parents like that, and I’m still not over it. There’s no point in calling CPS about stuff like that because they do not care about emotional or verbal abuse.
CPS workers are angels, doing the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this work we all want done, but few have the gumption to do. The system, however, has shown very clearly that it doesn’t care about the emotional or verbal abuse of children, in the way it ignores these cases. My mother was a CPS case agent whose favorite expression was “I’m not stupid enough to leave marks”. I’m careful to not paint anyone in broad strokes now. Was hell growing up with everyone praising her for being so good with kids while I got that at home ha. I’ve always been curious if theres perhaps a similar finding as with police spouses with CPS workers. Probably just my biases, but a lot of her friends (from CPS) were right assholes outside work and would talk loads of shit about their own families. Always wondered if that was just her particular friend group or if that was maybe a bit common amongst workers. That’s literally the most depressing statement ever. CPS has too many physical abuse cases that they can’t deal with verbal abuse. Why is this world so fucked up?? Why do so many parents enjoy abusing children?? We live in a broken world
I wouldn’t trash talk my own kid, but I do know of an instance of a kid behaving well at school and being a uh handful at home. Things like stabbing walls with knives, setting things on fire, refusing to do a chore, brush their teeth, do their homework, getting in fights with their sibling constantly. This is my nephew. He is in no way a bad kid, but he exhibits a lot of teenage behaviors at home that don’t come out at school: fighting with his sisters, complaining about chores, constantly wanting snacks but weirdly refusing to go to the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this kitchen to get them himself, trash talking his mom’s cooking, complaining about having to read books … In his parent/teacher conferences, his teachers describe him as a model student, the best student in the class, the most responsible and trustworthy student, etc. Both versions of him are true. The first time his parents ran into this dichotomy, they first confirmed with the teacher they were talking about the same kid, then asked, “Can you send the one from school home?”
I hate when they compare their kids WITH them in the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this room. Bobby is so much better at math than Sam. He’s just naturally smart. Sam never caught on to reading. On and on. It pisses me off so much! If it’s just a light hearted comment about personality that’s fine. But I’ve heard more negative comparisons than I’d like to admit. Parents like that are either dense or just cruel. I can’t figure out which. My most memorable parent-teacher conference ended with Mom blaming the student for her breaking sobriety and drinking again after so many years. And in the grand scheme of things student wasn’t that bad behavior-wise and grade-wise. Just normal growing pains due to the transition to middle school from elementary school.
As a (sober) alcoholic, if she’s willing to blame her kid for drinking again, she was never sober in the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this first place. She was probably just as mean and nasty without drinking as when she drank. I also am so selective about what I decide to tell parents about their students when it comes to behavior. The thought that I could say something that could make their life at home hell, really bothers me. Of course I expect potential consequences for the kid if I report a behavior issue, but there is a fine line between consequences and bullying (and possible abuse). My mother was like this. I’m almost 40 and she still reminds me of feedback she got from my first grade teacher. The teacher herself has been dead for years but her comment about how I “wanted to be naughty” still comes out of my mom’s mouth multiple times a year. Later in school I was a victim of some bullying where another kid lied about my actions. I had nobody to believe me and I faced some of the worst punishments of my life.
I teach at a k-8. I mentioned to some of my fourth graders that middle schoolers who were failing had to come in on Saturday to do grade recovery, and one kid’s eyes got big and he said, “so if I don’t do my work I get to come in on Saturday?! Is the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this cafeteria open??” I would have been that kid, but I would have asked about the library instead of the cafeteria. But honestly, any excuse to not be in my house was good. Damn : / I wonder what the legality is of a school slipping a kid some cash to buy their own food at the convenience store. My school provides some kids a backpack full of food before the weekend. Some of them are pretty discreet with it, others immediately devour the best stuff, and then distribute the rest to their friends.
One of my current students told me she was upset because they were giving the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this food to her brothers, who gave it all away on the bus and wouldn’t share with her. I had her talk to the guidance counselor and now she gets her own stash. The issue with the kid in my earlier comment was that his mom worked weekends, his older brother slept all day and he wasn’t allowed to play outside when Mom was gone because his neighborhood was unsafe. So he spent his weekend sitting alone in his room. We had a situation with a pair of brothers whose mom and stepdad would show up to the Friday afternoon food drive, scarfing down bags of fast food. According to the boys, the “parents” would feed themselves the good stuff like the creamed corn and the two would have to live off of whatever was left. Not all food insecurity is due to poverty. There are some parents who intentionally feed their kids very little out of sheer cruelty. And our CPS does nothing about it.
We have meetings that go until 5pm on Wednesdays and people can often be still meeting until 4:30pm on other days. If you see a kid still hanging around at that time, it’s time to find out why they don’t want to go home. A third grader asked me how babies are made and I told him that was a question he would have to ask his parents about. He came back the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this next day and said his mom slapped him across the face for asking her that. Yikes! I’ve told kids to ask their parents several times. This post is making be wonder if I should just say I can’t answer the question for them. I had a 7 year old tell me that when she gets home her parents make her go to her room. And they bring her dinner to her room. Shes not allowed to come out of her room all night. When she does come out because she’s lonely her parents will leave the family space and go to their own personal bedroom and lock themselves in. I’m sure they are doing drugs and don’t want her around it. But she doesn’t understand that because she’s 7. All she thinks is that her parents hate her. And she’s just the sweetest most loving child ever. Breaks my heart
The number of parents who don’t talk to their kids or interact with their kids much astonishes me. That this is STILL a thing. I’m GenX and our parents didn’t talk to us either, but it was considered culturally acceptable that they barely knew where we were at any given time. But the Plant a tree invest in our future Kentucky Wildcats Shirt in other words I will buy this culture has changed, how are there still parents who ignore their children? Its heartbbreaking because at this point, no one can claim ignorance. they *know* better than to do this. This is willfully ignoring and damaging your child on purpose SMH Had a student, Junior, 18, that was always sleeping in class. I talked to them about it one on one. Turns out, his father passed away and he worked nights so his family could afford their apartment and he can help provide for his other 4 siblings. He swore that he’d get his work done. He actually did so I was happy to pass him. Sad for his situation though.
