That brings me to, what is your “hit-rate” on secondhand purchases? If you made 10 secondhand purchases in the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this last few years, how many did you love 12 months later and how many did you want to sell? Across all of my different streams of consignment shopping, I’ve loved or really liked 53% of my purchases (around 18 out of 34). I’ve noticed I have a higher hit rate if I go in person consignment shopping for sure. Its kind of hard to walk out with something that I end up realizing I don’t love. I’ve liked 2 out of 3 things I bought – roughly 67% – lowest hit rate on TRR (liked 9/17 pieces or 53%, biz model incentivizes big carts/hauls over other modes like posh and in person because of high shipping cost) – 2/3 for the in person store (67%), realized the purse was too heavy for my shoulders after a couple wears, but literally wear the jacket and skirt I bought almost 24/7 when its the right weather
Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt details
– online purchase from in-person consignment shop – almost instantly regret (0/3) – all of them had stains or felt materially different from the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this online description Curious to hear from other people. My second hand success is great for me! I dont use a lot of my local stores, but I’ve enjoyed poshmark and Threadup (which I know some ppl dont like but…it works for me!) Mostly I think the thing is that I cant afford new natural fibers, and I very very seldom buy clothes. I usually look up the dimensions on the original retailer even if it’s posted on the secondhand item too. This way I want to say my yearly clothes budget is somewhere around $500 and I’ve accumulated a few wool cats (4+ years) cashmere tops (2+ years) and formal dresses (2 years) I wouldnt have been able to afford otherwise.
I’d say I probably have a 80% rate of liking the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this things in person, which I wish was a little higher but I have a much higher “retention rate” of the pieces in my closet compared to clothes I buy cheaper and new. ETA: I’d say my retention is helped due to the fact that I am more willing to pay for tailoring on a shirt made of a cotton cashmere blend I got secondhand for $25 compared to whatever I would have bought new with that money. This whole thread is making me realize I am missing out on the magic of tailoring. I think I’m also nervous about tailoring something too small and then immediately gaining weight and rendering it unusable, so I have some clothes that are my too big just in case clothes. I totally get being unsure about tailoring. I think the scariest thing about it is the mystery though so let me remove some of that for you:

Let buy this Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt
I get my clothes tailored at a Men’s Warehouse, they’ll tailor any normal clothing with a small ($5-10) upcharge for it being your own items. The alterations are cheap, and they’ll have prices prominently posted. From there, you dont necessarily have to tailor everything to a tight fit. Plenty of things I get tailored are WAY too big and I just take them down to a reasonable fit. I also always keep some “big clothes” but for things like tops you can absolutely get a huge visual change with just a “better” fit without needing an “exact” fit. I love ThredUP. However I don’t think a lot of people use it correctly. I’ve found it is great when I have brands that I know will fit off the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this rack, AND I also know how they wash and wear. A size medium after washing may shrink in some brands. Others they don’t. Knowing this info ahead of time has upped my success rate immensely. My only gripe is sometimes a color isn’t exactly how it was represented/ described. I think most of the complaints I see are about unfair payment and honestly that just doesn’t effect me a lot because:
B. Any service that sells my stuff but does all the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this “leg work” (pictures, shipping, payment etc) I assume is going to basically offer nothing every time and I just consider it more of a free service to get clothes out of my house lol. Especially when viewing the items’ longevity in my closet over years, I don’t know that my hit rate for secondhand is worse than for buying things new — but then again, my buying habits have also shifted from online/in-person new (but final sale) to mostly online secondhand (with a mix of return policies). Your observation about TRR’s shipping costs and how they shape behavior is interesting. I could definitely imagine some people taking it as a cue to buy a lot more and return a lot more — viewing shipping almost as one largeish try-on fee. Gotcha. I think the biggest difference for me is that generally speaking, I’m not buying final sale if I’m buying new – so I can buy 10 pairs of old navy/ gap pants and keep 1. But I can still have something in my closet and realize within a year that it doesn’t work for me. If you’re buying secondhand with more lenient return policies then before, that might help your hit rate. But at the same time, secondhand is definitionally something that doesn’t work for someone else – so I wonder if that might be a driver of an overall lower hit rate.
I used to hunt TRR for the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this 80% off stuff and I still do, but I almost prefer getting a little less of a deal but being able to return if I realize I don’t love an item (which reduces my discount but also helps me out in case I realize i hate something and now the onus isn’t on me to resell). I love that — “definitionally something that doesn’t work for someone else.” But maybe it’s more like comparing apples to apples when you are looking at similarly flexible return policies. How are we defining a “hit”? In a sense, isn’t your “hit rate” in the Old Navy example actually 10 percent? You bring up a good point. I think that return policies factor into what is a hit, but at the end of the day, I got my money back for what didn’t work for me. I have plenty of firsthand items I’ve ended up selling even though I had the ability to return, but the return window passed on me. I think with firsthand items and trr items that are 30% or less, we’re paying for the ability to get all of our money back.
For the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this sake of discussion/ ease, I’m just gonna consider what is the amount of stuff I didn’t end up having to donate or sell on my own. But yeah, it is a discovery process, you def bring up a good point. Yeah it does seem to me that secondhand shopping is most rewarding for people who are interested in clothes as a hobby or skill they’re developing, which comes with costs (money, time, patience). It’s not exactly an easy hack. I only buy second hand through brick and mortar. If I can’t inspect and see it in real life I won’t buy. I was just calculating my hit rate and it was 80%. I bought 11 items second hand in the last 12 months. One was a belt that I sized out in 6 months (yikes) and the other I just bought because I love it but haven’t worked up the nerve to wear. It’s just louder than what I normally wear but the fit is fantastic. A lot of retailers online are final sale now when there are sales so that has slowed down my purchases. It’s made me go back to the store and inspect in person if I can.
Agreed. I think when I shop in person second hand it’s so obvious when something doesn’t work for me. I stop in a lot to try stuff on when I’m doing drop offs/ pick ups and 99% of the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this time, I leave with nothing. Wow, this question got my excited to dig into my purchase histories and then a little woozy once I was actually tallying things up. I probably buy 70+% of my clothes used at this point, but I still have some newer items (in particular pants and athletic wear) in the mix. Looking back at the data, I realized that my decision to largely stop buying pants secondhand online was justified as they were the item I most often failed. I have a curvier, mid-sized figure and with how wildly sizing charts can fluctuate, inaccurate garment measurements, unknowns about the fabric content or stretch, or even issues with button vs zip flies, I just can’t be bothered with pants. The only exceptions are buying a pair of pants in a new color secondhand when I already own a pair in that same size and style from the same brand. My hit rate has been on an upward trend, which I think is attributable to the pants thing above as well as becoming pickier about the fabric content, cut, and finding that I am drawn more often to dresses, skirts, and oversized styles now which are all more forgiving. I don’t shop secondhand in person that often, but am more inclined to do when I can try things on.
My hit rate there, off the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this cuff, is probably closer to eBay than Poshmark, but I think I am more prone to impulse purchasing in-person than online. My ADHD means I can rarely be bothered to go through the hoops to return if that’s even an option, so clothes I fail are in turn passed onto my roommates/sisters/friends and then donated if no one else wants them. so true, agree with you on the pants. I’m a short person whose weight fluctuates and I carry weight in my boobs/tummy. I can do skirts, loose blouses, sweaters all day everyday online (these are a little OS/ more forgiving as well). Pants, I will only buy if I already know my exact size in the exact style and I’m kind of ok with having less premium pants but knowing it will 100% fit.
I have also learned a great deal more about fabrics/cuts through the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this secondhand process and have gotten a whole heck of a lot more picky in what I buy. I live in Germany and buy almost everything secondhand. Mostly on Vinted (online), but sometimes in thrift stores too. While I haven’t kept any data, I would say that my hit rate is at least 90%. And among those that didn’t work for me, it was either due to fit issues or realizing that the style didn’t look good on me when I tried it on, not due to any inherent flaw in the garment itself. The hardest thing for me to buy online is pants, as I don’t have the “standard” waist/hip ratio, and the easiest is (surprisingly) shoes. I have very standard size 39 (US size 8) feet, not wide. And I only choose secondhand shoes that look barely worn and are the type that I would always wear with socks or tights.
Know which types of items tend to be easier for you to buy and which ones cause you more problems with the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this fit. In other words, what types of items would you be more likely to need to return if you bought online new? You can feel more confident about buying the easy ones. If buying from a marketplace where you interact directly with the seller (like Vinted), ask for measurements if you are unsure. I don’t usually ask, but I sometimes do if it is the type of item that seems that it may not fit. Sometimes sellers provide these voluntarily. I am also more likely to ask for higher-priced items. Google the size chart of the brand, and if you have the item name itself, like the type of jeans, look for reviews. Oh easily 95% lol but I’ve been buying secondhand for a long time so I’ve made all my mistakes in my early twenties.
I would say my rate is lower for Poshmark than in store because it can be hard to tell whether something will fit, sadly. The good side is you can easily re-sell and the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this loss is lower – although you obviously can’t return. I do spend a long time researching brands and sizing and looking closely at different pictures and I won’t buy unless the seller has a good number of photos to show the condition. i always expect that things might need to be altered slightly, which i can do. so i guess that makes it a little easier for me. but same applies to for example store bought pants that are too long. as a short person there is no way around it i get a lot of really good deals on things that were washed wrong and are shrunk (people won’t tell you but you can really see it and also there’s often a discrepancy between the size they put in the description and the size it says on the label) which hasn’t been a big issue because i have a good steam iron that gets things in shape. then stuff with tiny holes that can be fixed. and most popular, things that may not be washed, like dry cleaning only. so that’s clearly the reason people are giving them away. but i just throw them in the washing machine and they either die or not. but so far they’ve all been fine 2 things i’ve bought within the last couple of months i’m probably going to resell are a bracelet that is just too small so i can’t even put it on and a dress that fits but i kind of don’t like how it looks on me
I have always shopped primarily secondhand. Without poring through my lists of purchases from previous years, I would estimate my thrifting in person success rate to be in the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this ballpark of 60-70% and online secondhand shopping to be 90%+. I find it harder to resist passing up good (usually cheaper) finds when I’m browsing physical stores, whereas I am extremely selective with what I purchase online. I’m working on drastically reducing my clothing consumption, including secondhand, in 2024. My target is 10 or fewer items and I want them all to slap! For me it’s been about 90% hit. I mostly buy items that I have tried on in person or even owned before. I know what style, fabric, and side I like. This results in a very specific search if I need something. I try not to browse for fun, because there’s a chance I may end up buying something I didn’t plan for. It sounds a bit strict but keeps me on track with my budget and closet planning. It’s low, I’m not gonna lie, but it’s way higher than when I started secondhand online shopping about three years ago because I’ve learned a lot. That said, my “new things” hit rate was also historically really low. That was probably in part because I have expensive taste but am not rich and so didn’t like a lot of the stuff in my price range, but also because size variances and other issues arose just as often as they do with secondhand. My takeaway has been that all things being equal, I end up with better stuff secondhand. If I made more money I would probably just buy better brands new, though, and less clothing overall.
Both! I do not thrift personally, but I consider them both a version of shopping secondhand, so both are relevant I’m batting at 60% on TRR and Poshmark BUT i recently stopped buying pants online and that bumps it up significantly 0, pretty much. But I stopped going because I found myself buying things I wouldn’t even buy new simply because they were nicer compared to the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this other merchandise and because they were cheap. I will thrift again, I just need to go in with the same mindset I go in at regular stores, only I need to examine the clothes VERY carefully. I have a few second hand items that are go-tos for me. There are definitely things I bought on poshmark that ended up not working and that I re-poshed. One of my favorite second hand things is a Ralph Lauren cricket sweater. I found it on poshmark and wear it a lot. Great quality and feels luxurious. I also have a purse I bought second hand that is vintage that I started using more than my designer bag when I first bought it. I bought a chambray shirt second hand maybe 12 years ago that’s still a favorite over the summer.
In person purchases for me have a much higher success rate. Poshmark, I would say 3 out of 8 purchasers worked for me. My hit rate is usually pretty high for online apps, EBay is close to 100% and depop coming in second. I used to be a thredup enthusiast but out of every piece I loved, 3-4 were huge misses. I don’t get to shop secondhand in person anymore, but, I think I had more misses with those as well since it led me to impulse purchase more often. To increase the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this likelihood of getting a purchase I’ll be satisfied with I keep a list of all my measurements and ideal clothing measurements (waist size, optimal arm length, garment length, inseam, pants rise, etc) and that’s helped a ton. I like this question a lot. Don’t have exact numbers, but I think my eye for vintage is better than my eye for new stuff, maybe because I am not enthralled by their newness, or distracted from the fact I really don’t need that by appealing online marketing. While I have gotten rid of some vintage items, it’s notable that most of the ones I ended up getting rid of were because I had gained weight or my body shape had changed. In particular, I had this amazing yellow tweed skirt which I still miss and a magenta Betsy Johnson velvet dress that I also got rid of (this one I regret because I’m pretty sure it would fit me again now). I also seriously regret getting rid of a few items, notably a black velvet blazer (it was slightly too large in the bust, but I found a tailor literally the week after I donated it), and an oversized blue silk shirt with a chain pattern on it (“It’s 2017 and I need to get into tasteful minimalism”). Only secondhand/vintage items I don’t regret getting rid of are a plaid skirt (purchased at value village) that was OK, but I upgraded to a pleated one in a nicer quality wool; and a pair of Everlane loafers which I got on ebay but were slightly too small in the toebox and gave me blisters every time I wore them, despite my arsenal of anti-blister sticks and specialized band-aids.
By contrast, I have virtually no regrets about any items I sold or donated over the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this years that were purchased new. This includes items I bought as “cool accent pieces” (a subset of my wardrobe that is now mostly vintage, so maybe the most direct comparison of a hit rate between new/vintage items) For me it’s about 70%! I’m getting better at eyeballing whether something is going to fit but sometimes I bring an item home and it’s a little too tight or it’s itchy or there’s something else. It’s funny like you said finding out why an item probably ended up in the thrift store in the first place. And even if some things go right back to the thrift store I’m still saving so much money compared to when I bought all my clothes new! Last year I purchased: 1 item in Poshmark= liked/kept. 2 items on EBay = didn’t like either, gifted to family. 14 items on TRR= liked 11, 3 didn’t work out. Like OP,I purchase most of TRR items final sale though(80% off). Like someone else mentioned I try to find items that fit my measurements as close as possible, but if I see an occasional “can’t pass it up deal” not in size I only purchase if the size is larger than mine so that the item can be tailored.
Yep, I’ve definitely had some issues with final sale TRR, but I’ve gotten better at knowing my general measurements/ focusing on items where fit is not so key/ I can get it altered I find I can usually get more in-depth information about pieces by asking the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this seller directly and higher quality items are at a more accessible price for me too. Almost all of my clothing is purchased secondhand now. When I’m shopping in store, I often get FOMO and buy things that I would haver never bought from a regular store but because it’s in my size and nice-ish, I buy it. And then I end up not wearing those items that much. When I buy from ebay or vinted it’s 50/50 hit or miss since I can’t try it on or return. I also get overwhelmed by the options.
Most of my clothes are fairly ordinary and I don’t have a problem with that. I tend to like individual items but love outfits when the Planet Earth Atmosphere Shirt Also,I will get this outfit just clicks. Bought 28 items secondhand in 2023 (for me & family members), of which six were duds for various reasons. I would estimate the same ratio for new. I do tend to buy something new and then buy a different color secondhand for less, so I’m pretty much guaranteed to like those purchases. My hit rate is pretty low because I mostly buy secondhand at thrift stores that don’t allow trying on clothes. I’m mid size so depending on the era the clothing is in, the number on the tag doesn’t give me much leeway to understand its true fit. I do a lot of the tricks to find my fit but I won’t know until I take them home. I will say I have a tendency to find crazy prices for name brand stuff at the thrift store so honestly that’s more of a data point for me. I walked away from a store with a satin shirt retailing $500 for $20 bucks on a vacay. Overall though my rate is pretty low but it works out as I’m usually sending the stuff that I didn’t fit in back to my family in a different country anyways.
