It was the Piss Me Off-I Will Slap You So Hard Grumpy Witch Cat Blood Moon halloween T-Shirt and by the same token and end to a perfect night. As the bride and groom drove off from the driveway of our home around 1 a.m., it was time to finally relax. One last glass in hand, my husband Daniel and I toasted the triumph of having just hosted an elegant small wedding at our home. It was the first we had ever given over the course of our own three-decade marriage—and, more notably, the first that was held during the COVID-19 pandemic. But as we toasted each other, we realized our celebration was two weeks premature. We now had to wait an agonizing 14 days to know if our strict safety measures had worked and that all 27 guests would be symptom-free.I remember the exact moment when Allie Schmidt (now Allie Gillespie) texted my 24-year-old daughter Florence with the request. Our multigenerational family of seven was two months into sheltering in place in our home in Michigan, and after a snowy April, the sun was out and the temperature was rising. It was a refreshing change, with four of us working remotely.“Here’s a question,” Florence asked, as we sat on the deck tapping away on our laptops. “If the governor eases restrictions on outdoor events, would you consider letting Allie get married here?” Allie, my daughter’s college roommate, and her fiancé Scott, had originally planned a mid-July wedding for 125 people in a park followed by a reception at one of the area’s most iconic restaurants.Their large wedding was now canceled due to the pandemic. But since the couple was moving to California the week after their planned wedding date, they did not want to postpone the ceremony. As Allie said of their decision to press ahead with a small family wedding, “We figured we are getting married for better or worse, and this pandemic is pretty much the worst, so we should just move forward and start living those vows.”The bride wore a mask during hair and makeup/Allison Farrand“How many?” I warily asked Florence, looking around our backyard, which has a sizable wooden deck and a brick terrace overlooking a large garden.“Twenty-seven,” she said. That number included the bridal party of 12 with Florence (one of Allie’s bridesmaids). The rest would be family. It is hard to imagine any entertaining these days, even with a limited number of people. Since mid March, the safest thing we can all do is stay home. But in May—when Allie called—the curve in our state had flattened and, based on the statistics being updated daily by the state, we felt confident that the number of COVID cases in our part of Michigan would continue to decline in the coming months. (They did for a while, but then started to climb again shortly before the July 11 wedding, though not sharply enough for the governor to order us back into lockdown.)So when Florence looked over at me, my immediate inclination was to say yes. Ever since moving into this house a decade ago, we had regularly hosted outdoor events for fundraisers and family celebrations. Our backyard can easily accommodate a cocktail party of 50 to 75 guests. But that was pre-COVID, when people could stand next to one another outside and come inside if the weather turned bad. Given that our family had only recently started inviting a few people over (and always kept those small gatherings outside), contemplating more than two dozen guests congregating in our yard felt both terrifying and tantalizing. And there was another issue: My 86-year-old mother lives with us.Social distancing protocols were firmly established/Allison FarrandIf we agreed to host Allie’s wedding, I had one rule: Beyond the bathroom, no one was going to come inside the house. The last thing I wanted was to expose my mother to the virus after months of keeping her safely locked up like a national treasure. After a family conference, my husband Daniel and I agreed that if allowed, we would host the wedding. On June 5, the governor said outdoor events with up to 250 people could take place with social distancing. Allie’s guest list suddenly seemed minuscule in comparison. We kicked into wedding action. There were two things in Allie and my family’s favor: One of my closest friends is a top caterer in town, and another close friend is one of the most respected immunologists in the country (he trained under Dr. Anthony Fauci). Not only could I trust that the workers serving on the big day would be properly trained, I could get advice from my personal COVID consultant on safety protocol.Members of the same household would be clustered together during the ceremony/Daniel RivkinKatherine Farrell, my friend who owns and runs Katherine’s Catering—and who got married at our home 28 years earlier when my parents owned this house—met with the bride and her mother the following week on our deck. Katherine quickly suggested we use our side garden (where she had been married) for the ceremony, as the chairs could be socially distanced. Cocktails would be on the deck with plexiglass sheets separating guests from the bartender, and appetizers (spinach artichoke tarts and prosciutto goat cheese puffs with rosemary dried figs) would be packaged in individual boxes. Dinner (a choice of steak roulades, grilled lamb kabobs, or ratatouille with fingerling potatoes) would be served on the terrace at large round tables with individually plated meals. Everyone would be given their own salt and pepper shakers. The food would be heated and plated in our garage to avoid using the kitchen. Dispensers of hand sanitizer would be on every table.“I have done four weddings in the last month,” Katherine reassured me. “My top priority is making the guest experience safe.”Another COVID concern was weather. If it rained, our only choice would be to have the entire event—from the ceremony and cocktails to dinner and dancing—under the 20-by-20-foot tent they were putting up over the deck. I would then have to allow guests onto the screened porch for everyone to socially distance. It would be possible to space everyone, particularly as many of the guests were quarantining together, but it would be a bit like moving chess pieces around. People would have to step forward and backward in their pods to give other pods and people space. But by far, my biggest worry was spreading the disease. Two weeks before the wedding, it was now apparent the virus was not taking the summer off but rather vacationing in new and old hot zones. It was also targeting young people, and half the wedding guests were 20-somethings. I called Allie, who assured me that all of the wedding party were quarantining two weeks before and nearly everyone had been tested. I knew Florence had just tested negative but was happy to hear Allie’s brother had as well after arriving from Seattle.Guests were served drinks from a bartender positioned behind a plexiglass barrier/Allison FarrandDespite these assurances, I called my immunologist friend, Dr. James Baker—who writes an informative, daily blog on COVID called Pandemic Pondering—for some last-minute advice. Beyond canceling the entire event (which any good immunologist would suggest) he did have thoughts concerning my mother’s health. While we had always planned on her staying upstairs in her room during the wedding, Jim suggested she vacate our house for the entire weekend. “Respiratory droplets can linger inside for 24 hours,” he said when I told him guests would be allowed to use the bathroom. “Keep your mom away until Monday.” I made a mental note to open all the windows and turn on every ceiling fan the morning after the wedding. The bathroom could only be accessed by following a direct, clearly marked 18-foot path/Allison FarrandThe day of the ceremony, I woke early and checked five weather apps that all said there was zero chance of rain that night. Daniel and I spent the morning sanitizing surfaces and making strict safety protocol signs before cordoning off the downstairs of the house except for a direct 18-foot path to the bathroom. At noon, my sister, who lives nearby, picked up my mother and took her to her house, where she would stay until Monday. That evening, Allie married Scott in our boxwood garden in a beautiful ceremony with Florence by her side. In the hours that followed, everyone drank, ate, and danced. If not for the sanitizer on tables and masks on faces, it might have been a normal, albeit small, wedding. Allie signs her marriage license as her great-uncle, Thomas B. Fenlon, a Catholic priest who had also married her parents 28 years earlier, looks on/Allison FarrandBut it was only two weeks later that we truly celebrated their union with another glass of Champagne. No one, including the bride and groom’s grandparents, had fallen ill. Our safety measures as well as the stars had aligned to keep us all safe and healthy. For a moment, life felt almost normal again.

Adriana Diaz and Bryan Smith at their Chicago Botanic Garden reception. Vogue, June 2020.As the Piss Me Off-I Will Slap You So Hard Grumpy Witch Cat Blood Moon halloween T-Shirt and by the same token and times have shown, home can be the ultimate sanctuary. These days, it’s the place where we spend most of our time—spring turned to summer and will likely transition to the New Year before we’re fully out and about again. So for sentimental as well as practical reasons, home—and its related outdoor space—seems to be the best location for a wedding. After all, it was the pre-pandemic venue of choice for some of the most celebrated nuptials; Jackie wed Jack Kennedy at her family’s estate in Newport, Rhode Island, Beyoncé and Jay-Z tied the knot at their Tribeca penthouse, and after her 1959 wedding to Jacques Charrier, Brigitte Bardot retreated to her parent’s house in Louveciennes, France. Bardot’s marriage celebration was an incredibly casual one—she said “I Do” wearing a cotton day dress of pink gingham.Should you be considering your own at-home wedding, there are a few things to consider. “Remember, when you are hosting an outdoor event you are building a venue,” says Michelle Norwood, a wedding planner based in New Orleans who is responsible for this jazz-filled celebration previously featured in Vogue. But that doesn’t mean you need an architect to ready the space. Here, Norwood, along with event producers Stefanie Cove and Jung Lee, share their most valuable tips on hosting the perfect backyard wedding.Alexandra Richards and Jacques Naudé’s wedding in Connecticut. Photographed by Hector Perez, Vogue, January 2020.Pick a day thoughtfully, as you have more flexibility than ever before. With more people working from home, guests may be more lenient with their schedules. Lee advises couples take advantage of this and not feel pressured to stick to holiday weekends in the summer. “You should get married in the season that you love, whether that be late summer or fall. Each season has so much to offer in look and feel. Do you prefer lighter/ airier colors or rich, dark richer hues? Figure out which speaks to you as a couple, and go deep into it.”If your alfresco wedding is set for 2020, Cove suggests experiencing the space beforehand. “Ideally, look at the landscaping a year prior so you have an idea of what the property will look like in bloom for your wedding date. This will prevent any surprises.”Adriana Diaz and Bryan Smith’s Chicago Botanic Garden reception. Photographed by Chi-Chi Ari, Vogue, June 2020.If possible, designate individual locations for arrivals, the ceremony, the reception, and the after-party. Depending on how much space you have to work with, try to spread out the festivities as it will keep the flow of traffic steady and streamlined throughout the event, which is something to consider in a socially-distanced wedding. “I highly recommend having separate spaces for the ceremony and reception. It avoids having to flip the space between the ceremony and reception and plus your guest transition is much easier between events,” says Norwood. The most atmospheric space should host the ceremony—but test it out first. Per Jung, “Consider all your options, then simply take a photo with you standing in front to gain perspective—ideally at the time you want to be getting married so you can be sure the lighting is right and the sun isn’t hitting you directly in the eye.”As your event winds down, move into smaller spaces. Cove recommends hosting after-reception festivities in the coziest part of your backyard. “If you anticipate a much smaller group for the late-night dancing and party” she explains, “I would move to yet another smaller space so it doesn’t feel like 30 guests are in a space big enough for 300.”Adriana Diaz and Bryan Smith’s Chicago Botanic Garden reception. Photographed by Chi-Chi Ari, Vogue, June 2020.If you have a paved courtyard area then there’s no need to bring in flooring, but grass parties are difficult to pull off. Not only will a dance floor provide a smooth surface for the first dance, but it will also designate an area for people to congregate while the band is playing.“We often incorporate the architectural hardscape of the property and mimic it so it looks natural. Whether that be limestone, bluestone, or mosaic tile,” says Lee.If flooring is out of your budget, Norwood suggests communicating to your guests to wear appropriate shoes. “Lawns and stilettos don’t mix. You can gift your guests with lawn heel protectors, so they are not digging their heels in the lawn all night, or advise them beforehand to wear wedges.” You can also provide your guests with alternate shoes for dancing—flip flops or flats (Norwood recommends Rescue Flats)—but have a tucked away station where guests can ditch their shoes to ensure you “don’t have a sea of colorful mismatched shoes in your wedding photos.”Florals filled Elaine Welteroth and Jonathan Singletary’s Brooklyn wedding. Photographed by Annabel of Belathee, Vogue, May 2020.Work with the existing landscaping when bringing in more florals. Be mindful of what flowers are in season and the local vegetation for an authentic feel. “Bringing in complementary neutral florals to simply elevate the space is how I like to design,” says Norwood. “No matter the season, neutral hues are classic and elegant.”You can also artificially enhance existing plantings. For roses and hydrangea bushes that have “seen better days” Lee will bring in tubed blooms of the flower and nestle them into the bush. For other floral arrangements, be mindful of the weather. If it’s particularly hot out, keep your flowers in a cool air-conditioned space as long as possible before setting them into place.Margarita Annabe and Ilya Goncharov’s tables at their Lake Como wedding. Photographed by David Bastianoni, Vogue, August 2019.No matter what you’re going for, make it meaningful. “[Decor] is so important and should be incredibly personal. We often use the couples’ china, silverware, and crystal from their wedding registry and use it as their place setting. To use your personal wedding china and stemware as you have your first dinner as a married couple is so special.”Don’t feel the need to keep everything uniform. You can mix an assortment of vintage goblets and glasses for a bohemian effect or rent vintage crockery in an array of patterns. But think beyond the dinner table. As Cove explains, “It is easy to assume that decor just refers to florals and linens. I also like to consider the bar facades, treatments to tent poles, treatments to tent ceilings (fabric or greenery), stage façades, and specialty napkins (embroidered, etc.). The small details will matter the most, and it’s important to reflect the couple’s aesthetic as well as the surrounding location in these design elements.”Adriana Diaz and Bryan Smith’s Chicago Botanic Garden reception. Photographed by Chi-Chi Ari, Vogue, June 2020.“Make sure you look at the sunset time for your wedding date when deciding the guest arrival and ceremony start times. And ensure that all necessary areas are lit based on that timeline,” says Cove. After dark, string lights, candles, and chandeliers can illuminate the spaces. “Always consider the weather,” says Norwood. “If the winds are high or if it rains you will want to use LED candles in lieu of traditional flame candles.” Be mindful of the fact that additional lighting might also require the use of a generator.A canopy of flowers over the tables at Margarita Annabe and Ilya Goncharov’s Lake Como wedding. Photographed by David Bastianoni, Vogue, August 2019. You always need a backup plan. If feasible, have a tent at the ready if the forecast calls for rain. Tent posts can be festooned with greenery and florals so as not to take away from the ambiance. Rain in the preceding days or morning might require flooring (if the ground gets too wet) so also have a floor-option available to you. Also check for the day’s wind speed as the wind can often be worse than rain and make it impossible to set up your event. Norwood advises to “be prepared with EZ Clips to secure linens in place and LED candles. If you’re hosting a seated dinner, have a backup plan to place menus under wine bottles, cards in forks, napkins under plates, or use napkin rings. The more you prepare, the better off you are on the wedding day.”Having parasols, umbrellas, and shawls on hand will ensure your guests are comfortable no matter the forecast (and make for good gifts).
