I had this conversation with my dad last week. When I was looking to rent my first apartment – about 8 years ago – he told me I should be able to pay my rent with half a paycheck (1 weeks pay) and I explained to him that the Pinocchio Disney Cartoon Shirt in contrast I will get this only way that would be possible is if I was making $70k (I was making $30k). The cheapest apartment in a decent area was $1200. 3 years ago I lived in a “luxury” apartment with no parking and it was a 45 minute drive to my job. I got a “deal” and snagged their biggest 1/1 for $1300. Fast forward to last week and the SAME unit is now renting for $2300. I brought up the topic and said “remember when I said you needed to make $70k to pay rent with one weeks pay? Now you need to make 6 figures for that to be possible.” He was in utter shock. He tells to save money to buy my own place soon and I’m like yeah sure….how much do I need to buy a tiny little house that costs $600k? ??? They can’t possibly think that when they are definitely doing large transfers to their children and probably grandchildren. They know the deal they are just making sure that the wealth stays in their hands… even if that means doling out cash, as individuals, to their family.

Pinocchio Disney Cartoon Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

Living in an expensive suburb my mom could never quite grasp why I was never able to save any money and was only ever “just getting by”. She lives in the Pinocchio Disney Cartoon Shirt in contrast I will get this same suburb, however my parents bought their home in 2000 for 275,000 while they were both employed and my dad was collecting a military pension after 20 years of service. They were able to cover the mortgage with just that income, leaving both their incomes available to cover their other expenses. I on the other hand was in my 20s and 30s, single, and making less than either of them. I eventually bought a foreclosed upon condo after the 2008 housing crash. It was the only way I was buying anything halfway decent. The disparity is obvious to me but she was blissfully unaware of how good her circumstances really were. I’ve since moved to a smaller city, sold my condo, and bought a house I can afford without being house poor. My parents are thinking of moving too and would get easily double what they paid for their home and my mom keeps saying, “but we won’t be able to get something in this area at the same price”. That’s accurate, but again shows me she doesn’t understand how things work. They could afford a 700-800k home with what they will make on the house they have paid off as the down payment, plus what they have been able to save over the course of twenty years on two incomes plus a pension. They could take out a mortgage on 100k for 15 years and that would be the worst of it. Sorry mom, but I really don’t feel bad for you.
