It’s truly absurd what most people in the field make. The only way I receive a living wage was finding a job that is also criminal justice based within the county public defender’s office. It’s the most exhausting and rewarding job a person can do. Most of us only see and deal with the human population when they are at their darkest or made the worst mistake of their lives. We work with those that society deemed “deplorable” decades ago, and our pay and respect we receive in return reflects that. Fuck man something has got to give here in the field. Biomedical science grad students. Work 40-60 hour weeks in a Ph.d. Program and even with a masters degree you’re lucky to break $30,000 per year.

Maybe it will change soon because the volunteers aren’t showing up like they used to and the best of the field are leaving in droves to become nurses or police/firefighters because during Covid it was clear nobody gives a fuck about us. All emergency and public safety personnel. I’ve spoken to friends that work EMS/Sheriff/Cop jobs and pay only ranges from $10-18/h apparently Scientists. I’m talking PhDs doing all the different kinds of research. After spending 5-7 years completing a PhD in their area of expertise, the average salary in academia , according to the NIH, is around $42k-$45k. And congrats, you can pay for benefits yourself in many cases.
