The company I’m at has a 4 day, 40 hour work week… that has become a mandatory 5 day 50 hour work week (until further notice… which started 2 years ago), with just about every 3 out of 4 Saturdays also being a mandatory 1/2 day, so our 4 day work week is essentially a 5 1/2 day work week. Don’t try to convince management, force them. To do that you need to start organising your co workers, that means talking to them and mapping out your workplace, then going from there. The research right now shows that employers will make as much money off a 32 hour workforce (in most industries) as a 40 hour, so their profits will stay the same, they’ll pay less in heat/space/support, and have a happier and healthier works force. We did a rotating schedule of two employees working 4 days one week and getting Friday off, then the other two getting the Friday off the next week, to ensure enough staff coverage (not enough work to justify hiring one more person). I HATED it. I lost out on 10 hours of OT because I was working 40 hours two weeks per month instead of 45 (we are paid during lunch hour unless we leave the premises, so an hour pay to mostly fuck around). It was like $300/month less. Doesn’t seem like many people look at that when considering the downside to it. Plus it meant I didn’t get home until 6 pm, which left me only 3 hours in the evenings.
