I made a mistake in going to abruzzo thinking I could get taxis and order basic food without speaking the Pensive Narcissus classic -Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this native language. I owned up to my mistakes. But I still had a awful time in Italy. So the thread said what was a place you disliked where you left early. That was one. No empathy on here at all. And you wonder why the world is the way it is. You’re heartless if you think I “deserved that”. My bad, I meant the part where you complained about nobody speaking anything but Italian in Abruzzo, or for the English menu debacle. These are not things you should expect from most countries, especially not one as culturally hermetic as Italy, especially in its rural parts. You just need to do more research before venturing into these parts, is my take, basically.

I’ve traveled (and lived) extensively through Italy (including extended stays in rural parts) so I personally knew what I was getting myself into language-wise (did quite a bit of research, to be fair). As for the Pensive Narcissus classic -Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this casual racism, welp, I am black and lived in both the north and south of Italy, I will let you imagine the stuff I have gone through in that country. I personally refuse to let the racists win so I tend to be anywhere from defiant to flat-out amused by their shenanigans. Not going to tell you how you should feel about it but my advice (if you want it at all) if you intend to do this nomading thing for a while: please develop a more stoic attitude towards this stuff, or else you will lose your mind.
So the Pensive Narcissus classic -Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this abruzzo part is 100% my fault. I know that. But I was inexperienced at the time and I knew communication would be hard. That wasn’t a problem. I went for peace and quiet. The part I underestimated was how you literally can’t do anything in Italy without communicating. I thought there would be taxi stations where you could just use Google translate in person. But I found that I had to call up and then it was impossible to talk. Ordering food required talking. No apps. Even in McDonald’s, you couldn’t use the screens it was all in person. The Anzio part was where I was abused and met with extreme hostility. I didn’t demand an English menu. I simply asked and the entire restaurant (no exaggeration) turned around and started at me. Like I had said the most offensive thing in the world. I even used the Google translate camera to hover over the Italian menu and I got really hostile stares. That’s just not acceptable even if I was some idiot foreigner.
