A combination of a person who’d been raised to think that your were obliged to work hard for other people without question and a company that was happy to let him work himself to death if that’s what he “wanted”. My step dad got cancer and got too sick to work. When his FMLA time was up, they fired him over the phone after previously saying they would keep him on. He died just shy of turning 65 and retiring. Had the boat and everything ready. Worked his ass off all those years for the company to say fuck you.
