In my country it would be a super nono for an employer to even think of maternity leave as a factor when considering hiring or performance evaluation. I can’t imagine a manager in existence that wouldn’t hold it against her. Obviously, there are laws against officially retaliating, but you can’t avoid the bad taste in the mouth it’ll leave. What’s the worst case scenario though? She makes some income for awhile, she takes off and gets fired and then has no job? Still more money than not having a job the whole time? She doesn’t have to list it on her resume just as she wouldn’t if her time at the company never existed, so her employability will be the exact same cuz she can chalk up any employment gaps to being pregnant and a new mother. What country is this in? I’ve hired pregnant women on several occasions. Some of them still work for the company. If one’s doing their job – they are doing their job. Doesn’t matter if they are pregnant or not. I only make sure that they get easier schedule that wouldn’t interfere with the pregnancy. I’ve only had issues with a couple of new and pregnant employees. But they had behavioral issues. For example, one was a bottom performer, half-arsed everything. Half-way through maternity (about a year after giving birth) decided she wants to leave and work someplace else as a recruiter. Mind you, at this point I hadn’t seen her face at the office for a full year, and her being a bottom performer, I didn’t mind letting her walk out, so she would be someone else’s problem. Then 6 months later, I think she got fired, because she called me to ask for a job. Not her old one, but for a leadership role, with requirements she didn’t cover, experience and education included…. I think companies, at least the smaller ones, hire based on need. So if you were on the hiring side, you wouldn’t want a hire who comes for a month or two and then goes away for a long term leave. Who would do what your wife was doing then? Rather the company would prefer if your wife got done with whatever and then joined.
