Most of us do, at least to some level. If not entirely fluently, at least we’ll enough for simple conversations. No? But it’s fricking English? You know? I expect emergency numbers to care enough to find a translator for one of the most common languages on the planet… English is the international language of business. Almost everyone in the world who conducts business speaks English. Some are fluent, some are moderate, and some are pidgin. But most do, and if not, surely someone could be found who does. lol..I actually mentioned that in another comment, that EUROPEANS speak more than one language and most Americans only speak one. But as an Italian in NORTH America, all you had to contribute was “Do you expect people to speak every tourists language?” Is it infuriating that you were in a country and you could not speak their language or that you expected them to cater to you not being able to speak the language they all speak?

Why didn’t you use Google translate? Americans love to go to non English speaking countries and expect them to speak English. Yes, I did. Honestly feel like they don’t care as long as there are no villages near.
