A gay male friend of mine has told me about this. His theory is that gay males have to have butt sex, and when people picture that, they picture poop, and that grosses them out. Honestly, it’s rooted in misogyny. Being attracted to men is seen by society as a feminine trait, while being attracted to women is masculine. Historically, a man showing signs of femininity has been looked down upon. If you can’t accept that fact then you are simply in denial of reality. The disgust that Western culture has towards homosexual men is analogous to halal or kosher diets; they started as ways to prevent disease within their populations centuries ago. These public health traditions, which may or may not still be relevant today, still carry weight in their culture. Hmm… you know, I think that saying “gay men” might be a bit broad. I’m a gay guy that doesn’t come off as gay at all. No one treats me bad when they find out I’m gay, they just might seem uncomfortable: like I challenge what they thought they understood about gay men.
