I saw a flattened decomposing cat with a collar by a city curb once and wondered what the poor owner was thinking. Or maybe the owner was in ignorant bliss thinking their cat was happy and free, when in reality it was dead and rotting for no good reason. Outdoor cats do fine until they don’t.

If you have a cat that you really think needs to be outdoors, either you have a poorly socialized cat who needs MORE attention from you and not less, or you’re lazy and want the aesthetic and affection of a pet without the work that it entails. I drove by a ran over cat a few weeks ago. It was clearly someone’s pet and looked well cared for. I can’t get the image out of my head. That’s why I don’t let my cats out and to be honest they were both rescued from outside (street cat and feral cat) and they have zero desire to go outside when I open the door. They know the horrors of outside life Birds also need to be outside, freely flying. Yet I rarely see people advocate for this. Much of the time I see people suggesting/advising bird owners to clip wings, which is pretty gross in and of itself. They can’t even let their birds free fly indoors, imagine letting them outside like they do cats… wild birds need to be outside, freely flying. captive bred birds, which are kept as pets, do not have the survival instincts wild birds do, and will almost certainly die once they’re out in the wild, hence why no one advocates to let your birds outside. wing-clipping is barbaric and no one who knows a single thing about birds advocates for clipping, but do encourage harness training to be able to take them outside and free flight recall. hope this helps
