The US is so devisive these days that there is no wonder people are afraid. It’s a hassle to raise your kids to have and understand freedom. I’m American, I think that it’s propaganda. People here are force-fed doom and gloom 24/7. I guess when everything you see in the media is another boogeyman, then everything becomes a boogeyman. The US definitely has a “stranger danger” culture (some of it is valid, some isn’t) though I don’t know if the examples you gave are necessarily mainstream.
