My wife left teaching after 15 years because of this. The district she worked for had a rule that the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and lowest grade that could be given was a 70. She asked a district leader “Why should I give the student that didn’t do anything a 70, but then the student that tried also and gets a 70 and makes them feel like it wasn’t worth the effort?” She was essentially told that it was so the parents or children wouldn’t be upset and that the correct score could be reported as well, but it would be reflected as a 70 for reporting. The quest to make all things equal is killing our education….not to mention the district’s need to keep the funding flowing. My daughters boyfriend is a sophomore at a state university and he doesn’t know the 12 months of the year! I have already told her that I am not paying for her wedding if he is the one. Here is what people don’t understand. Until 3rd-ish grade you are learning to read. After that you are reading to learn. So once they are behind they are BEHIND.

This is sad. You should package this in a letter to the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and nation’s education department and so called education leaders along with the president, websites, YouTubers, news and media outlets, and big time influencers that would spread the message. I blame it on the capitalism invading the systems. Colleges cost too much so now families don’t care if their kids attend. I blame it on clueless leaders and too much hand holding giving to kids not enough accountability or consequences. If they can keep passing without these basic skills, so many will think it’s not an issue and parents who are mostly overworked or out of the loop will think their little sunshine is doing fine. I know a kid that made honor roll and can’t even read a short paragraph.
Read at grade level. Some come into my classroom at a 3rd/4th grade reading level. There are some students who cannot sound out words. High school physical science. In NC you take either honors chemistry, honors physics, or physical science. All ELLs IEPs and 504s get put into physical science. Tried doing a reading assignment to work on reading skills. 2 paragraphs long, maybe 10 sentences total in the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and passage, and key words that answered the questions were bolded. You would have thought I had handed them a 30 page science research paper. I taught that very lesson today in 1st grade! It’s so frustrating to know that so much of the knowledge that we are trying to teach is so quickly discarded. I don’t know what else to do to get them to understand and remember.

I was saying this back in 2006. I taught junior and senior English, regular track. I had a handful of students out of 240 who could read at a 5th grade level. The rest could not. And I was expected to teach them creation myths and Chaucer and Shakespeare. I got 1 kid out of that bunch to pass the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and standardized test that would allow them to graduate with a diploma instead of a cert of completion. They had a chance every month from 10th grade on to pass the test. 1. 1 kid passed in his senior year. I work with middle schoolers, one of them didn’t know what order the months are in (or what month we’re in right now) another one didn’t know what the word destroy meant. Also their spelling is BAD like kindergarten bad. And their writing is terrible, can’t read it, no punctuation, just all around bad. I feel sorry for these kids cuz it’s hard to advance in education when you don’t have a solid foundation. And yet we allow kids to pass and move on to the next grade levels no matter how bad their grades are.
Time for a professional development by a teacher who spent half a year in an “urban” school who really fixed all the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and problems with some personal relationships and other magic. I feel like I could’ve written this word for word. Way to many teenagers can’t even use a ruler accurately. Some can’t tell which side is inches vs centimeters. Shit is wild. I teach art, I have 5th graders who don’t know what a pattern is even though I teach patterns in different ways every year. Kids who can’t problem solve anything, they will yell out “My pencil broke” and then look at me like they have no idea what to do. All my classes have cleanup jobs and I swear the kids have never had to clean up after themselves before and are shocked when I don’t let them leave until their table is clean. Longer. They will have offspring. Then there offspring will have offspring. You think these parents suck, wait till you see the next batch.
I just looked it up, it’s kind of a long story. Apparently English is the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and only language that does this. The I is the only single letter pronoun. It derived from the Germanic ic. It’s more interesting than I made it here. We’ve been capitalizing it since about the 1300s. That is the prime reason I will be hanging up my hat soon. I simply cannot convey the material I am tasked to convey to the students in my classes, as most of them are quite unprepared in the manner you write of. I teach high school. Students can’t figure out where their names fall in an alpha breakdown. For example, last name “Brown”. Home room #1 is “Abb-Bun”. Kid doesn’t know where to go. This is especially relevant to my class today. My eighth grade students needed to take a survey that required their home address and their own cell phone numbers. At least 40 percent did not know these basic pieces of info.
I am a high school teacher-turned-community college math instructor. OP, you are preaching to the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and choir here, and have hit the nail on the head. In my math classes, I have had many students, especially post-COVID with issues like: Most of the questions pertaining to rounding are “what does hundredths mean? What does tenths mean?” along those lines. Had one student in a Quant Literacy class write a blurb on his test saying “A funny story, I graduated high school last year (from one of our “magnet/premier” high schools in the county nonetheless), and can’t round” Unable to recognize scientific notation, particularly in Statistics when using the calculator to find various probabilities from distributions
Multiplication/times tables in PreCalc, particularly when factoring Quadratics. Also fractions. I admit my teacher in grade school (5th grade) skipped fractions so I had to learn them on my own Students have missed test days and just immediately ask me “oh can I take it next week?” or the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and next class when I hand back a test, i’ve had many students say “oh, we had a test? Can I take it next week?” Generally, students aren’t realizing actions have consequences. I nailed two students for phone use on a test last term, when it’s specifically stated that phones/devices are to be put away, and they wondered why they got a zero on the test for that. And the student who tried going over me didn’t get what she wanted (our college supports the faculty). I have just seen more of this post-COVID it seems. Writing complete sentences. I see this in Stats, and for some assignments, I ask for a complete sentence and they can’t do it.
I agree with everything you said. It’s going to get worse because I teach primary and they are coming in lower and unable to focus. Many do not listen to teachers and need constant redirection. I’m so exhausted with their need for constant stimulation due to their screen time. Their need for dopamine is greater, so everything is more pronounced. Parents are very forgiving and don’t want to face reality. This is what I have observed happening. I’ve been teaching over 20 years It depresses me to even talk about how far behind my students are. I teach social studies and there is such an utter lack of knowledge for just basic things. A lot of them don’t know the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and difference between a city, state, or country or the cardinal directions. I just don’t understand what is going on at the lower levels where they have no basic skills or knowledge.
Yesterday we were learning about Andrew Jackson and the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and 1824 election and how the House had to decide the winner. Today we were learning about the 1828 election and the first question was who were the candidates. I had kids shouting out things like the House of Representatives! Or the electoral! Or inflation! I’m like people, read the question, you’re just shouting out things you learned before. I am a student teacher (2020 high school grad) and it has really shaken me to my core about how insanely behind the kids are now. Now, my professors and mentors have reminded me that I am teaching a mix of special ed and on-level classes while I took almost exclusively honors/AP/college classes when I was the same age as my students. However, I took a handful of “on level” elective courses, and it never seemed this bad. I have students in “on-level” that cannot read or even spell. They will misspell words that are in the question they are answering. Either they cannot or they refuse to use the words in the question to spell. Furthermore, I have juniors that are submitting assignments telling me Pearl Harbor happened in Japan and then labelling the attack in China. Ever since starting college for education, I (and my cohort) have been nervous about like what is like “on the other side” since our school experience was “pre-covid” minus the last couple of months of our senior years. I think you are spot on about the gap between honors and on-level widening.
Sometimes when I grade papers, I just get extremely sad that this is the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and future of our country. My post-grad teacher friends do tell me that their schools are better and that it isn’t awful (my experience is in a Title 1). Their schools also have a no phone policy that is enforced. My admin don’t seem to care much for consequences for behavior unless a student is injured or school property is damaged. It’s almost like we’ve got a society that’s working parents to the bone just to survive. By the time parents get home with their kids it’s time for a meal and a shower then off to bed. When the fuck are parents even supposed to get involved these days, cause I’m just starting out and it scares me. I get like 2-3 hours a night max with my kids that I gotta get dinner, a bath and cleaning done. We read a book or 2 every night, but damn there’s no time. Fuck these jobs, I just wanna be with my kids.
Oh! The example thing! Yes! I teach math and give them guided notes that explain each step and then work several examples. When they get to the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and problems, they can not follow the examples and work the problems. I kid you not, I have had 8th graders say but the numbers are different! I just can’t believe how helpless they are. Coming from a K-6 perspective, there’s lots to be said about the parent side of things and people more qualified than me have spoken on the lack of support from the home. But I want to add in that I don’t think the curriculum we’re forced to teach through state standards is developmentally appropriate and it’s causing students to be severely lacking in foundational skills. Phonics & fluency have taken a severe step back in favor of comprehension and to a smaller degree, vocabulary. Play-based learning has been taken out of Kindergarten, and honestly? I think that has really hurt students’ ability to solve problems critically. Recess is really short, writing and science is damn near cut from every grade until they get to fourth (since they don’t get tested on those subjects til the fourth).
Tiktok, more specifically the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and “reel” or short video endless scroll format, is the absolute worst single invention in the past 10 years. As for the illiteracy, it’s because schools literally stopped teaching kids how to read. They taught them to memorize words, and look at pictures to figure out what a word is. No phonics, no sounding out. And this went on for decades! Sight words…it’s just what it sounds like, knowing a word on sight and that is NOT reading. Sold a Story is an excellent podcast that discusses how we got to a place where we don’t teach kids to read and what should be done now that they’re illiterate. Also, activist and maker of the documentary “right to read” Kareem Weaver has robust information on his website. We were lining up for a fire drill the other day and I told the kids to walk all the way to the fence, a fourth grader turns around and asks “what’s a fence?”
Guys, if you have a home visiting program through your school district for ages birth-5, please recommend it to the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and parents of your students. I work for this type of program and we go through a lot of the things you guys are mentioning, including social-emotional development. Getting parents on board with learning early, teaching them how to help their child learn, and how to communicate with teachers is the only way we can combat this. If you’re not sure your district has this program ask around. Well No Child Left Behind can take some of the blame. Sure, not having posy puberty (high school aged) kids with pre puberty kids in middle school is not a good idea. It still does a lot of harm. For instance, I hear that the last time I passed math was 6th grade, and they are proud of it.
As someone who is going into teaching for history this makes me sad. How can our country be so inept in such a vital field for future success. I teach 7-12 Learning Support so I know and expect they’re grade levels behind but I have 7th graders who can’t read KDG sight words. I’m teaching beginning phonics and I struggle to find the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and time. Least no one is bitching about my test scores. This is my 18th year in the 7-12 American grades. They definitely have less ability than they used to. Almost none of them capitalize or punctuate correctly. As OP said, their computer skills and research stamina are low to non-existent. I think back the work involved with a card catalogue or microfiche and these kids won’t scroll to the third or fourth Google result.
I work in an elementary school and it breaks my heart the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and number of significantly behind students who don’t qualify for an IEP. There are lots of exclusionary factors, attendance being one of them. In order to qualify for an IEP, the student must have evidence of a learning disability that is impacting their academic performance. Students who are chronically tardy and absent, or who simply don’t have a good support network at home, fall behind but are unable to qualify for an IEP. These days everyone gets promoted regardless of academic performance, so these kids just get further and further behind each year. Until schools return to truth in grading and actually holding students accountable for knowledge of the content, things will only continue to get worse. This problem started happening before the pandemic, and Covid only exacerbated the problem.
I had to explain to my eighth graders which hand was their right hand a week ago. I almost walked out that day. I think it’s easy to blame our fear of “failing.” I’d love to see a shift in mindset though, where we simply hold students accountable to some really fair and reasonable benchmarks in order to pass to the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and next grade. division (single digits) — dividing and multiplying by 1 really is confusing to them. and simplifying fractions is really rough. 10. many don’t know that north south east and west exist let alone how to tell which direction is which on a map. 12. there are 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours in a day. and lengths of sunlight time changes based on the time of the year 13. fahrenheit and celsius aren’t measures of “fire hot” and “cold” and you can have warm and cold temperatures on either scale. a kid asks me how it was possible to have 100 degrees of cold. took me a WHILE to parse that question. 14. california is not another country. we are in arizona. one kid doesn’t have a passport so he can’t go to california. womp womp, i guess. Chiming in as a college tutor, I was just asked by a freshman if we go around the sun or if it goes around the Earth. Idk how I managed to keep a straight face
We just went to an all day PD the Mt. Joy Garden In Boston 2025 Poster Shirt and by the same token and other day and just like any other PD, I can’t get myself to buy into any of what they’re selling. I mean they’re not bad strategies but they’re strategies that require time, commitment, and a student body that gives a shit. None of these PD stuff means a lick when students are so far behind, don’t give a damn, or can’t behave like their age. So excuse me when I’m told the barrier to student success is not enough SCAFFOLDING. No. The barrier to student success are students, lack of parenting, and a culture continually pushes the importance of superficial things. I’ll allow for all of the spot crazy things that kids are unprepared for in high school. You will always have outliers in class that even their peers gawk at for what they don’t know. What gets me more is the utter apathy and open disdain to try that a decent number of kids exhibit. No resilience to failure, no appetite to struggle with a hard assignment or question. No ability to critically think or troubleshoot. Just total non thinkers. When kids realize after they do nothing for an entire school year that they still stay with their friends and go to the next year it teaches them that there are no stakes, and that effort is not mandatory. It doesn’t benefit the kids to move them along, it just placates parents and infuriates teachers. The kids need real responsibility, and as much as we can try to hold their hand in class eventually you need to show you can succeed on your own. I thought my diploma didn’t mean much when I graduated but it means even less now.
