What is it that makes a student care about their education? The parents are failing, because they are working. The economy is crushing parents, and taking more hours of their time and attention than ever before. They have their own goals and intentions, but very little actual knowledge of how education works. You’re a sub which, for some reason to kids, means it’s a free day to be an idiot. I have no issues with my 7th hour. I leave early one day for my sick child and another teacher fills in…..removes 6 kids because they won’t stop being issues. High school soph-srs for a other tenured faculty member. It sucks. Sorry that happened. If regular classroom teachers have to rely on force of personality to get things done then it says a lot about admin and their attitude towards institutional support. I’ve noticed, though, that some subs are just… really good at being subs. I am not even 50 and remember a time when you could afford to feed your family a good meal every night and not only that but you had time to cook it as well. That is not the world we live in and now we are constantly trying to get somewhere and have no regard for the people around us, even just in traffic.
