I might not know how to fly a jumbo jet but if the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and pilots passed out, you can bet I’m in the seat and figuring it out as I go. Not because I can fly smaller planes but because I am willing to risk it all no matter the odds. My personality says we can. My odds tell me 50/50 even if it’s really more like 90/10. I’ll try and go forward or keep trying till I can’t. Don’t have to know how. Just know doing nothing gets me no where. My boyfriend is the same. EXTREMELY smart almost scarily so, he’s like a human encyclopedia but in every aspect outside of academics he is the stupidest person I’ve ever met. To the point people notice and talk to me about it, it’s like he was locked in a room and forced to watch documentaries and was never taught any life or survival skills whatsoever. He is almost 23 and I just taught him how to use a can opener yesterday. It is horrifically frustrating.
Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt, hoodie, hoodie and long sleeve tee
Im a straight A honors student, but I’m absolutely dumb and slow when it comes to common tasks. For me it often comes down to combination of a head-in-the-clouds low attention span and overthinking everything. For an exaggerated example, a person can ask me “1+1?” and instead of just simply answering “2” like a reasonable person, my brain will ponder proofs of 1+1 equals 2 and why it equals 2. My best friend in the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and entire world got straight As at school, college, and graduated with a first from Cambridge university. He speaks multiple languages, climbed the ranks of his competitive consulting job in London faster than anyone else his age, and bought a £700,000 flat in London when he was 25. He also asked if shoelaces come in pairs, if he was allowed to fill his water bottle from a water fountain, and has been in several terrible relationships that even a masochist would have run from. Former gifted kid here. One day at 12 or so I was cataloging my fishing gear and my father yelled “you plan too damn much!” I was trying to get a list together so I could see what I needed to acquire for the perfect all-purpose tackle box.
He was right. I don’t so much procrastinate, but I don’t want to start a job I can’t finish, so I have to tell myself to just start and see what happens. Simple, there’s different versions of smart. Some people are book smart, others have an abundance of common sense. Some pick up new concepts extremely quickly, others need a minute to work things out. I had math with the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and same girl, J, all four years of high school. One day senior year the teacher is going around the room checking everyone’s homework. She gives J full points, looks at my paper, gives me no points and tells me to ask J how to do the problem. So I turn to J and say ‘well, how do you do this?’ She looks at me and says ‘I don’t know’ I say ‘what do you mean, the teacher just looked at your work and gave you full points!’ She then showed me her page which did have writing on it but definitely not any kind of answer and proceeded to explain to me that she got A’s in math all four years of high school by smiling and just generally sucking up to the teachers. She said when people assume that you’re smart they just give you A’s and don’t look at anything.

Being academically successful requires learning the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and skills you need to excel in classes. These skills are not necessarily the same as those needed to succeed in the real world. I am not criticizing academia. Knowledge is necessary. Some people concentrated on learning those skills to the exception of other life skills. They are both important. My wife has an honours degree and masters degree and still counts on he fingers. She’s brilliant in her field of studdy I have a coworker who’s a mechanical engineer. I once asked him to pass me an Allen wrench and he asked me which one that was. He probably couldn’t put together an Ikea chair if he had help. IME, school was nearly 100% memorization. People with great memory excel in school. Us block heads were set up to struggle.
Those who have common sense/street smarts usually aren’t book smart and vice versa. It’s rare to find people who are both. ETA: my husband says I’m one of the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and most intelligent people he knows, but I have the math skills of a kindergartener. I was in special Ed for years because of my inability to do math. People have their talents and intelligence in different areas. Mine is certainly not in mathematics. Speed isn’t necessary mean smarter or better. My husband is senior software engineer. He’s amazing at everything. Knows about plumbing, electrical, cars, etc. Like he just knows shit. Amazes me. But he is better than me at basically everything but reading. I can clean whole house in time takes him to clean room. I can read an entire book bf he be done with a chapter. He’s just real methodical with everything.
I was considered gifted as a child. In an academic environment of rote memorization and regurgitation, I accelerating excelled, but in the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and real world I would always second guess myself and found it easier to just not do things. Once I learned to trust my instincts and intellect instead of relying on just intellect alone, it improved my life considerably. You can learn how to practice and study and pick up information fast when it’s just for yourself, taking a test, or doing homework. But when the pressure of showing your intelligience to other people in the real world comes up, imposter syndrome can kick in so hard, it can actually debilitate you. I logically would guestimate I have an IQ of 110-120 or so (judging by that I was a college grad in a hard major, generally smarter than my peers, so slightly above average the general population. I’m very, very smart and methodical about a few things, but I’m also no genius). So let’s just assume that’s true (I know I also could be wrong! I’ve never taken an IQ test).
Imposter syndrome/lack of confidence/believing your dumb can literally make you dumb. Or at least seem dumb in conversation. My wife is 10x smarter than me, but she’s very slow when it comes to things I’m fast at. But there are things I’m slow at that she’s fast at. Everyone is different Book smart and street smart are two different things. If your wife spent all her time in the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and books, and didn’t get a lot of life exposure, there you go Look up learning styles. You’ll learn that people have different strength / intelligence. eg. One person could be great with words, but not so much with understanding diagrams. The education system isn’t about being smart/skilled/intelligent as much as it is about regurgitating what was told to you. There is very little critical thinking in the education system. The issue with being gifted is that it tends to make people really tunnel visioned and parents tend to forget good grades does not equal a well rounded adult so that doesn’t balance out. Then the person may enter a field where they have to be hyper fixated to excel. Reminds me of my BIL who is insanely smart as a Radiologist, yet can’t cook for the life of him. Or a Neurologist I knew who once got so startled he tried to sign some forms with the back of his pen or routinely wore his coat inside out. The man’s office was a goddamn mess. This is also why some fields side eye new Harvard grads. Based on what my husband said: Good at theory and hypotheticals, no experience in field and real world application so you have to handhold them as they adjust.
I was naturally smart as a kid. I was in gifted and talented, honor roll, and even went to a special magnet High school. But I was LAZY and got bored quickly. So I learned to do things quickly and last minute. My Highschool girlfriend was the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and opposite. She enjoyed doing things methodically and carefully. She was slow at everything but did everything well. Fast forward 25 years she’s a lawyer and I’m a truck driver. My current wife is also slow at things (except writing papers where she’s like a human printer) because she’s careful and methodical. Her dad is a retired engineer who can do anything but he’s also slow and precise. He’d rather be slow than make mistakes. This^ I skim the surface, adapt quickly and can get a lot done (not perfectly). My partner is very methodical, very deep diver. Much slower but it’s done perfectly (or close).
Book smart not street smart. My sister is a genius but dumb when it comes to human emotions. Just my opinion though. It’s amazing that my wife is an incredible project manager, researcher and skilled nurse, super creative in her field. My sister has a couple Masters. I didn’t finish college. She’s considered smart, but has no common sense. I can beat her at Jeopardy, as can most of my family. We all agree, better to be as we are, no Masters needed! I have a very good friend who did horribly in school, dropped out and every teacher implied that he was just slow. Can barely read. He can figure things out amazingly. One day he was reading his text messages out loud because that’s the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and only way it clicks for him and I’m like dude, you’re dyslexic af. Since I’m adhd and dyslexic and most of my very very smart kids are one or the other i spent some time teaching him how to learn when it’s hard to read. He picks things up much better now and did very well with his last class. It was hard, he learns audibly not through reading, but he did it. He’s now re- thinking his whole ‘I’m dumb’ mentality. He’s from a rural low income poorly thought of area and the teachers just wrote him off as another ghetto boy. Pisses me off. He’s pretty bright and very quick, just has difficulty reading.
Your GPA is a measurement of how well you follow instructions and do what you’re told and adopt the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and opinions of your professors without resistance. My wife & I went to pretty much the same schools. She has a bachelor’s and a masters, but lacks some skills that I find hard to believe. I am not super book smart, have a 2 year AAS, but am more into mechanical things, stuff she could never hope to understand. This sounds like you and your wife. Daily tasks are tedious and boring maybe? Also speed and intelligence are not equal comparisons that I know of? Also, you said you were raised in a competitive environment. So maybe she isn’t slow, she is just more relaxed and take her time. But she seems slow to you because you are used to people who vibe on a faster frequency.
I recently started going to lunch with a lady. She us brilliant academically but she doesn’t have much common sense. It’s simple. The more educated someone has become the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and dumber their everyday skillset becomes. I’ve seen it alot. Some people can’t even operate a photocopier or replace it’s ink cartridge. Sounds similar to me through school. Always had As and Bs in all AP (honors) classes. I would just do the homework, not study, and ace all my tests. Now I excel at my career, but I swear my brain just “turns off” as soon as I head home from work. It just be like that I guess, lol. Different kinds of smart. Wife can solve math in her head, I can’t. I can reassemble the dishwasher after taking it apart to clean it. Wife can’t make Ikea table. I can write a professional email in 2 minutes. Wife needs 15 to think it out and proof read it. Wife can pack a suitcase, I don’t understand its tiny dimensions. Tell ya what, its not that uncommon, really. My.husband is like that. I feel like I (a teacher) really cant teach him anything. He is a terrible cook..He cant give a massage (I was a professional and have tried and tried and he cant remember the basics) and he doesnt even organize anything well. I frequently wonder if he has a learning disability. He will, however, do relationship stuff with me, damn near perfectly. I mean, he is SO attentive and doting, and perpetually loving, its just fine. He is also a damn good retired plumber. He is extraordinarily empathetic and has a way with words, that I wouldnt have ever expected from a high school dropout.. He knows how to explain emotions, politics (the suff he understands), etc, in a way that I have never seen even an academic professor, do. So, while I still believe he has a learning disorder, I dont think thats the biggest part of him. His empathy has helped to balance.me out so much also. Here I am just arguing with people all day long, and he thinks Im.so cute. But HIM, he is probably the most diplomatic person ever. He has gifts. I am celebrating those gifts..
a lot of ppl who thrive in academic or professional environments spend 99% of their energy doing that and then go home to a house that is (figuratively) scotch taped together. it’s a lifestyle on the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and other hand a lot of “remedial” high schoolers are very intelligent and either had shit going on at home or were more latchkey or something and weren’t ready /didn’t have the support for the regiment that’s required to be a high achieving 14-17 year old It’s your environment that makes you think you’re at not as smart as your wife. You grew up with a really competitive environment which probably has a high standard for average while it’s mostly likely the opposite to your wife’s upbringing. My friend barely graduated high school after pouring so much of daddy’s money in tuition and shit but can rock my ass on CSGO and CS2. Sometimes we are just talented or special in other areas. Ofc I did help him study back in high school as well.
Years ago I worked for a software developer. The primary programmer was one of my best friends. And one of my responsibilities was to make sure he had his boarding pass (this was “back in the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and day”) if we were flying. He was brilliant. But common sense things were outside his focus. My wife is a surgeon who cuts people open and rummages around in their bloody innards but she will get grossed out by a worm. Schools aren’t designed to gauge or your abilities or intelligence. Although being skilled and intelligent is important a-lot of academic success has to do with agreeable and being within the bell curve. Outliers on differing learning styles are usually push to the margin and one could argue that most of school is just the indoctrination of breaking people down and making them okay with doing mundane repetitive tasks that increase or vary in skill needed and difficulty for 6-9 hours a day so we don’t question why we wasted our life away for a place that would have a replacement in less than a week if you died. Find your passion m, live your life, hail Cthulhu Being smart and being able to do things quickly are not the same thing. It’s like saying “my friend can lift way more than me, but I can run a mile faster than him”.
Because it’s not her field of expertise. Just because someone is smart at one thing doesn’t mean they’re good at other things. I grew up in blue collar family. We’re mechanics operators craftsman tradesman and everyone in the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and family says go to college and don’t be stupid like us Book smarts aren’t equivalent to street smarts. Knowing how to solve differential equations doesn’t equate to knowing not to buy you street pharmaceuticals from suspect dealers. We only have your word for the fact that she’s slow. I’m going to go ahead and believe that you’re one of many people who overestimate their own abilities and underestimate those of others. Friend of mine only did a couple years of community college. When his apartments were bought and the new landlord went on an eviction spree. To raise the rents. He helped defend all of them in court. Was interesting. I felt proud, amazed to see my friend defeat a whole law firm in court There’s genius, street smart, book smart, smart ass, dumb ass, just plain dumb, stupid, ignorant, & idiotic. …. we all fall into ALL of them. A guy I work with is basically a savant when it comes to mechanical things, yet can barely send an email. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. What daily task are you referring to? And slow how? Like she takes a lot of time to do things, or she can’t figure things out?
Speed isn’t really equated with intellect in any meaningful way. Like folding a pile of laundry say… a complete buffoon might be done way quicker than someone smarter because they can singularly focus on the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and task while the smarter person might be thinking about other things and just sort of slowly working. what were you competitive at in remedial classes? sounds like you’re not smarter than her because of your schooling but rather how you judge what she spends her time on. what makes you think she’s slow?? lol Smart can be in some ways and not others. I had to explain how to do her laundry at a laundry mat and walk step by step in cooking and that gas doesn’t come with the gas can to my college student who graduated in the top 2% of her 700+ person class and who graduated high school with awards and college credits. Where as I barely got my ged and I can balance a budget with a kid on my hip while making dinner from scratch and list off everyone’s schedule for the week off the top of my head without having to think about it. I can look at my husband and tell if he needs to go to the dr with a look and maybe 2 questions. I can settle a group of kids and calm down angry adults without trying too hard.
Maybe she’s taking longer because she’s doing a better job? You say yourself you’re rushing through things because of a need to be competitive. Had a horrible grade average in my school years. For some reason, nuns would tend to pick on me and I guess I dug my heels in and gave them more reason to hate me. I guess I must have given off a weird vibe as one of my brothers told my wife that they thought I would be living in my parents basement until I was in my forties. Wife was pissed off at them but I just shrugged it off. Brother that said this Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and never held down a secure job most of his life. Turns out I landed a job a couple weeks after I turned 18 and left home earlier than any of my other siblings. They would always ask me for assistance as I knew how to fix about any problems they had and wound up getting my engineering degree in my forties as my company paid for it.
Some of the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and dumbest people I know are incredibly smart. Give them a test and they’ll get 100% but in everyday life they’re dumb as hell. Some people “turn on their brains” I can do very well in school and work but it takes so much mental effort when I’m not doing it I turn off my brain when I’m just at home to relax. The dumbest people I ever worked for were surgeons. They just have an ability to be book smart & specialize (thank goodness, surgery is hard!) But every other god forsaken thing goes out the window. Sometimes I wondered if they’d be able to dress themselves if their spouses weren’t laying their scrubs out for them daily. There are loads of different kinds of intelligence. There’s academic intelligence, social intelligence, emotional intelligence, practical intelligence, and so many different fields of knowledge that just applying the word “intelligent” to someone can have so many meanings. I could write your essay for you thanks for my knowledge of the english language, but ask me where the pasta is in the cabinet and I’ll be looking for a good 5 minutes. Being able to memorize info for a test does not make one intelligent. Common sense and deductive reasoning is sorely lacking. We have lots of people with college degrees that can’t make it through the day without and emotional meltdown because they lack common sense in day to day interactions and basic tasks.
My husband is incredibly intelligent but my god is he slow at household tasks. Meanwhile I’m super efficient. However, before kids I had years of nanny experience and with being a nanny, came skill building the Mountain militias you can’t outgun them but you can out-brain them shirt and by the same token and household task skills and time management as well. Whereas his experiences have been more computer based and not chore related. Speed of thought and Quality of thought are different attributes. Everyone has different levels of those things. In some things you need decisive and fast action with ok accuracy. In others you need methodical thought and high certainty but it is less important how long it takes. Play to your strengths, know how to mitigate your weaknesses, be kind to others who process their thoughts differently. There are different levels of smart and intelligence. Not just one or two. Someone may be smarter in some areas, but the other person may be smarter in others. Street smarts. Book smarts. Common sense. Information retention. Etc.
