Usually when I have a difficult customer who’s being stupid and hostile, I sick a co-worker on them named Jack. He’s old, angry, and doesn’t give a fuck if he gets fired lol. Once had an old lady who insisted she bought lamb in there the Moon Bats Snows Happy Hallothanksmas Halloween Gnomes Thanksgiving Christmas T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this week prior. She also pulled up the walmart website which had a store loaded up from over 100 miles away. She didn’t because the store has never carried lamb aside from once 9 years ago when we got it by mistake. Jack comes walking by and overhears the woman arguing with us, then interjects “lady we don’t have lamb, we’re not going to have lamb, and we’re not going to order it either, if you want it that badly you’re going to have to go to another store that does.”

Yes you can disengage and remove yourself. Apologize and say you’ll go get them help, remove yourself and alert management. It’s their job to ensure customers are happy when it’s out of cashier’s/floor employees hands. Now in my days in management, if I know the Moon Bats Snows Happy Hallothanksmas Halloween Gnomes Thanksgiving Christmas T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this customer is being a little bitch, imma walk them. Idgaf who they think they are, they don’t walk into my place yelling as my little ducklings like they aren’t already tired and working their asses off. I’ll have someone removed and banned, and i have had to do that. You are not obliged to engage with unruly customers, no matter what your management says. I refused to stop wearing mine after covid died down because our customer base is generally fucking disgusting. If they arent open face sneezing and coughing all over everything, theyre coming in with no deoderant on. Being able to wear a mask was a game changer. Every time i cought greif from some plague rat customer, i firmly told them im not required to take their abuse and walked wherever the hell i needed too to get away from them. The only time a manager ever had the audacity to confront me about it, i told them precisely the same thing and that if they wanted to push it we could go to ethics.
