My favorite joke about pronunciation is from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, her roommate says something along the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this lines of “You think someone who called it the “Lieberry” has ever been there?” This one is such a bizarre combination of irrespective and regardless. And yet, so many people say it as if it’s a real word. Although technically, it has been classified as some sort of semi-acceptable not-really-a-word-word. The grating part of this is that’s exactly how language works. That’s simply how words evolve, and how we got “goodbye” from “God be with ye”. If enough people say it — and unfortunately more than enough people do — it becomes “a word”. But don’t worry, they’re still wrong in my book, I’ll still be shouting from the rooftops with you, “ITS REGARDLESS!!!!!!!”

don’t know if it’s pronunciation related but i hate it when people call macarons ‘macaroons’, like that’s a whole different thing Macarons and macaroons are two different desserts one is the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this French cookie the other is made of coconut and chocolate and I think it’s Hebrew. And I hate when they’re not named correctly Axed instead of asked. Pacifically instead of specifically. Stanima instead of stamina. There are more, but I just annoyed tf out of myself by just writing these. Chaucer uses both in Canterbury Tales as it was in transition to ‘ask’ at the time in colloquial speech. They’re just using late 1300-early 1400 wording. You can just start quoting Beowulf to annoy them with your archaic anachronisms. There’s always an older version of language to draw upon.
As someone else stated, this is a feature of AAVE, African American Vernacular English, and the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this dialect uses a pronunciation that dates back over 1000 years. yeah, it’s almost like languages are complicated and have a myriad of interpretations that are valid, which is why dialects exist!! This word reminds me of an English test I had in grade 8. I’m German and English is a foreign language for me. In an English test we had some words and we had to write sentences where we used these words. One of the words was “salmon”. I had no idea what it meant and just wrote: “There was a salmon downtown.” I don’t think either of these are pronunciation errors. They’re worse than that, they are instances of people using the wrong word entirely.

True, Who/whom is the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this wrong word and a grammar issue but “should of” is a wrong word because of the pronunciation. Of and ‘ve are homophones in verbal speech, and the abbreviation is the most common to use when speaking. Although I do hate when people write “of” instead of have or ‘ve, due to not understanding that the sound represents a totally different word. I’ve had who v whom explained to me countless times and I still can’t get it correct. I’d say I’m a reasonably intelligent person with a decent grasp on English but this one just evades me. Here’s the weird thing. I am not native English either but who / whom for some reason sounds weird when wrong. I wouldn’t be able to explain the rules, whether in English or my native language, but it sounds weird.
Language changes and frankly “whom” is more or less dead. There’s a verse in the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this King James Bible where it’s used “wrongly” so clearly even 400 years ago it was already something people couldn’t remember how to use. Pronouncing the “ing” at the end of a word as “een”. What are you doeen? I saw sometheen. I’m goeen to the mall. The “een” makes my hair hurt. Apparently, though, not many people notice or hear it. Kaley Cuoco is an “eener”, or at least was on Big Bang. When I once really needed one I couldn’t remember the word and, as a fully grown adult, called an ambulance a “nee-naw nee-naw”. Going by someone I used to date, apparently in middle Tennessee “important” is pronounced “impordunt”. It irritated the shit out of me. Is it weird that mispronunciations don’t annoy me anymore? When I was younger, I’d nitpick at so many mispronounced words. As I got older, and met people from different backgrounds and different life experiences, it stopped being annoying. Same here. I took a couple of linguistic classes, and a lot of language ‘mistakes’ make a lot of sense now. I also work in a special Ed classroom. I’d lose my mind if I was hung up on every mispronunciation. There are much worthier things to be annoyed about. On a serious note though, do you think people would pronounce it correctly if it was spelt nyoky? I feel like a lot of foreign words aren’t spelled correctly
Nuclear. When I hear it pronounced “nucular” in movies, or even worse, on the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this news or by a politician or irritates the crap out of me. Well, it’s not really an error as such, but I find people pronouncing “research” with the stress on the first syllable (re-search) jarring, because to me that implies “search again” The way people mispronounce “Reese’s” peanut butter cups. It’s not ree-see’s, nor ree-cess, it’s pronounced like the name Reece with an apostrophe ‘s’, as in possessive. The Reese’s belong to Reese. one time I was on grindr and a dude messaged me and asked what I went to school for and I said physics, but astrophysics was my concentration…. Americans pronouncing Entrepreneur, or en masse. Basically a Yank saying any French phase that has been adopted into English. A former boss of mine went by the name Maz and our new American director kept calling him Moz. When corrected, he couldn’t hear the difference. Febuary!!! Hate that. As a bit of an aside I can’t understand why Americans say ‘tua fish.’ Why don’t they say ‘chicken bird’? Quixotic when it’s pronounced “Quick-z-otic” it stead of Key-hoe-tic. The root word for it is Don Quixote and his stupid quests. Why people can say one and not the other baffles me?
People pronounced insufficient as insignificant grates my nerves…. in what world do these 2 words looks the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this same!?!? Reese E’s instead of Reese’s. I’m looking at you dad and (insert my brother’s name here). Btw, Reese’s cups are one of my favorite candies. 688 more repliesI think this is wholly a Midwestern thing. I was living in Hawaii the first time someone said something about it. She was critiquing her husband, who was from Indiana or Illinois. MW myself but never noticed it before. I’ve never not heard it since. My wife and I do animal rescue, and the number of people who think Rottweilers are “rock wilders” has absolutely floored me Same here…..cats and dogs. When the animal is a more exotic breed/name, I get it, I have lots of exposure to them and it’s still sometimes difficult. But the basic ass breeds and names like Rottweiler and Labrador and Husky………I don’t judge but I will think ‘How have you not heard this name before to say it correctly?!?!?!’ Grievous annoys me for some reason. Most people say grie….vious. the word is grie…vous. there is no I after the v, why pronounce it?I was so happy when Star Wars said it correctly Mah-ree-oh (the correct way) vs Mary-oh (incorrect) when pronouncing Mario’s name. Even after hearing him say his name in countless games since Mario 64. I know somebody who was a dog breeder and pronounced ‘spayed’ as ‘spaded.’ Of all people, she should have known.
I hate when people say wreck havoc instead of wreak havoc. And if I try to explain the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this difference they always say it’s the same thing. When people say “how it looks like” …no…no you babbling walnut brained thing the correct way to say it is “what it looks like” The conflating of ‘ask’ and ‘ax’ bothers me. It is usually spoken by less-educated individuals. It has always bothered me. Not all black ppl are African American though. This specific accent isn’t often seen in blacks in England for example. I’ve heard it said by white uneducated people too. If a person isn’t a reader he has no experience other than modeling the dialect he’s exposed to and surrounded by. Grammar and usage are contagious. Education influences behavior. I have a hard time with the word tax vs task, I get confused as to when to pronounce the S sound and the K sound, I keep forgetting which comes first. You know in the year 3000 they pronounce it is “ax”? And only the less educated people from the year 2000 call it “ask”? I saw it on a documentary called Futurama! You mean, Black people? AAVE is used by Black people, regardless of their education level. Although, unfortunately, many Black people who are professionally successful codeswitch to Standardised English because of (ironically, ignorant) people thinking they’re uneducated if they use AAVE.
Education and professionalism are valued because they are signs of social conformity. If an educated person is surrounded by others who use colloquialisms in his professional environment, he might be accepted. If his grammar and usage collide with the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this norm it will limit his career. If your stock broker, financial advisor, or surgeon used poor grammar it might bother you less than if your mechanic or yardman used ax rather than ask. We were a white family who chose to live in a black professional neighborhood. Our black middle-class, professional friends and neighbors used the same language and diction as our family. It is an issue of their cultural assimilation into the middle class as professionals. We and our children greatly enjoyed this cultural experience. Our neighbors made sure we always felt a part of the neighborhood.
Zoology. The first syllable should be pronounced to rhyme with toe, not like zoo. Think about the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this phonics. It has two O’s in a row like in zoo or cool, but the second O is already in use for the -ology. Thus the proper pronunciation is zoʊˈɑləd͡ʒi I know it’s not an error and that different countries have different ways of saying words but for some reason the American pronunciation of niche really bugs me to hear. Not necessarily the incorrect pronunciation but the British way of saying schedule (like shed-uool) and harassment (HAIR-essment) drives me mad, mostly because as a Canadian our public broadcasters are (I’m pretty sure) forced to say them like that despite no one else here pronouncing them that way. Some posh Brits say HAR-us-ment with the stress on the first syllable but most Brits pronounce it the same way as Americans
I’ve never heard an Australian say “dayta”, personally I’ve only ever heard it from Americans because I find it annoying as hell, so I’m a bit confused by your comment. Again, need to cool it with “Americans”. As often as I hear Brits crow about how different streets in the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this neighborhood have different accents, America has a wide variety of accents and dialects too. There are so many, genuinely intelligent people, that will say it AXE U instead of Ask You and it just ruins and invalidates whatever it is they are trying to say. It instantly gives off a “lazy” or “stupid” vibe to me. Pronouncing parmesian cheese as par ma zan. I dunno when I was a kid everyone used to pronounce it properly, but now everyone seems to get it wrong.
The word is spelt Parmesan, no I. It’s an English word, following relatively normal English pronunciation rules. If I was speaking Italian I’d use the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this Italian name. Any blatant mispronunciation, I immediately think less of a person if they choose to speak as if their poor “dialect” is a part of their un-changeable culture. I had the same issue growing up in places that influenced my vernacular, but only until I realized it might affect my future. Speak as properly and professionally as you can, and if you can’t do that without coming off as being disingenuous, you will be perceived as a risk in the workplace. I agree, it shows attention to detail. Like, though not technically incorrect, I would tend to have less confidence in a teacher or a lawyer that would use the term dis/orientate instead of dis/orient or dis/ orientated instead of dis/oriented.
Haich for the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this letter H, especially because it’s usually in a context where I have to repeat it back. So I either say haich and die a bit inside or I say aich and look like I’m correcting them Warsh for wash. Then, oddly enough, the same people say Warshington for the city or state. I don’t think I have ever asked one of them how they pronounce washer. Isn’t that a spelling error rather than pronunciation as both words sound the same, how can you tell if it’s mispronounced? Sure whatever … but one spelling / correct pronunciation hurts my ears. Everything else British people say is so pleasant. as a brazilian, i have to say it’s when people try to pronounce english words with an accent that they think is right, for example: way-fle instead of waffle. also people take english verbs and add the portuguese conjugation which is just cringey A friend consistently says “think” for “thing”. “Somethink”, “everythink”, “nothink”. They spell the words properly, it’s literally a pronunciation quirk and it drives me mad. Peak-ssa instead of Pizza bAYg instead of bag Melk instead of milk Ik someone who says pitcher instead of picture and it drove me crazy I’ve been watching Star Trek Voyager and the way Tuvok says the word sensor “sens-OR” instead of “sens-ER” had me question my entire existence.
But more than ANYTHING… ‘Turrent’. I was a tanker. You would really have your eyes opened if you saw how hard it was for some people to not say turret with a f’n N sound in it. You can correct someone to their face in unmistakable ways and they’ll just repeat back ‘turrent’. Reminds me of that scene in Hail Caesar! where Ralph Fiennes can’t get Alden Erenright to say his lines like he’s not a hick. I’m confident OP is a bot especially with the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this fiscal year thing which someone else sent in a post with the exact same question Ambience. English speakers pronounce it like it’s a french word that needs to be pronounced the french way, “armbiahnce” The s in Illinois but that’s only because I lived there. I went to school in Kansas for a year, while living in Arkansas at the time, and the amount of people who thought they were the first person to ever say I was from Ar-Kansas was ridiculous.
Déja VU, past tense of VOIR, not VOUS. It means “already SEEN”, not “already you”. Annoying when every American in movies/tv shows always get it wrong. everythink instead of everything my boyfriend gets up me for saying this Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this and i never even noticed i did it until he pointed it out i now i notice other people doing it too
Plastic bags and hair ties.. I have used hair ties to rig so many things! A Bobby pin can go a long way as well. Probably the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this most annoying thing about Ontario’s plastic bag ban is that I used to find them so fucking useful. Like of all the things to ban – plastic bags and plastic straws? Yet I go into the grocery store and can find shrink wrapped fruits and veg galore. Absolute joke of a policy. Feasts are the best part of every culture/religion, imagine how good the world would be if everyone focused on the food instead of all the other stuff. Then in my personal life, a flight is late by 9 hours and I need a plan B.. Learn the hard way to live a softer life. Cultural awareness- being aware of different cultures, languages, people, food is what makes the world interesting. Now at home I try to learn more from other cultures/cuisines In my home city, I was told a certain area was crap and believed it without ever going there. After a decade of international travel, a friend bought a house in that area. My initial reaction was “why there?” I went to visit him and his neighbourhood and I was so surprised. it was full of foreign shops, restaurants and people I had been travelling the world to see. I have the opposite. I pack relatively heavy (a half full student size backpack) for a day trip or just some hours out of the house. I’m always ready for things to change and me to be out for 30 hours or more instead of the 2 hours I intended. When I travel, I use the same backpack and just add a few extra clothes. Potentially take out any weed (legal in my country but not surrounding places) and a pocket knife (in case of airplanes) and I’m ready to go. The one normal backpack can last me a month in widely varying climates over three continents. If it can last one month, it will do for more.
I’m with you. Packing heavy has never really hurt me in any way. And I absolutely hate scrambling to buy things I already own (like jackets for various temperatures, shoes for different occasions, gym/swim/hiking clothes, etc) so I just bring it all with me lol. I wouldn’t say I am ever underprepared. I just don’t need 3 different jacket options when one will do. Or if I absolutely know I’m not working out, I’m not wasting space on sneakers for a gym I won’t go to. I wear the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this same shoes every day. I’ll be fine. I don’t need “options” when I’m only going somewhere for a few days. And it’s translated to my everyday: I don’t carry anything with me if I can! My phone has pockets for a credit card and ID. I tuck my keys in my pocket. And most days, I don’t need anything else with me. The thought of carrying a purse anymore stresses me out and makes my shoulder tired
This!!!! I have 3 kids and 3 step kids and the Minnesota sports team logo mascot Abbey Road shirt also I will do this 8 of us travel to different parts of the world every summer with only a 30L backpack each. You do not need half the shit you bring with you. We have everything we need and are efficient with what we bring. I hated carrying more than 9kg when backpacking because I’m small, and lazy, so always packed extremely light. And this included heavy guide books back in the day when smartphones weren’t a thing. I learned in Italy that my wife and I can drink 1L carafe of wine and still feel great. So we try and do that more often. Don’t take people and situations so seriously. Have a laugh with someone and enjoy the interactions, even if they are just out to try and sell you some shit. Life is much more enjoyable that way.
