I know that we have a much better understanding of SPED these days, but at the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this levels we’re seeing? What has happened? A couple things I’d think about, I wonder if you’re teaching in a similar demographic from where you went to school and if that could explain any of the differences in behavior issues? For example, I went to public school in a fairly nice area, I teach in an area that faces far more poverty and broken households than I grew up around. I’d also think about the fact that diagnosis of autism has skyrockets in the past couple of decades, not all of which can simply be explained by an increase of awareness and attempts at diagnosis alone. For whatever reason, we are seeing an increase in mental health disorders in children today than we were when we were kids, and the system is two steps behind adapting to these increased needs for specialized services. TBH, I went to a public school in a fairly economically depressed area. Whilst it had a low MLL population and was pretty demographically white, we were predominantly working-class/ borderline poverty with a lot of single-parent households who worked multiple jobs.
Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt description
It’s not an apples-to-oranges comparison at the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this school I teach at now per se (my school is famous as “that” school in the county with the highest ESOL population), but even at a county level, I’d say it is similar to where I grew up but the behaviors are still worst. Part of the problem in the population I serve is that parents don’t believe in autism, ADHD, or mental health issues. They won’t get their kids tested, sometimes because they don’t know they can, sometimes because they “don’t have such things where we come from”. So while we do the best we can, there are certain services they need that they can’t access. Not just services the school provides, but medical treatment and psychotherapy. These are conditions that need more than a positive mental attitude or a punishment regimen to treat, but that’s all the parents think they need, so that’s all the kids get, and the rest of us just have to deal.
This happened with at least one student at my eldest child’s school. We learned in second grade that throughout the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this entire year of first grade, they routinely evacuated the classroom because one student would start throwing desks and other objects. I was told it took at least a year to convince that student’s family that the student needed to be tested and helped. The student is still there and supposedly doing better now, but at what cost? We call first grade “the lost year” because my child didn’t progress at all that year. I appreciate that OP is not talking about GE but I don’t think these issues are that easy to pull apart. Our major metro district is pushing VERY hard for 100% inclusion district-wide. The school I’m talking about is “full inclusion.”

Aside from safety, the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this thing that concerns me most is that kids cannot understand why some kids are allowed to act like that without consequences. As adults we all know why, but it’s not like we can tell kids the reasons. So what they see is that Joe gets to scream curse words and throw things, and Joe gets awarded for work that they would be given an F for, and it looks like a very unfair system. I don’t think it’s really helping with empathy at all in the way it’s supposed to. This is exactly the issue we had at the title 1 elementary school I taught at my first year. We would have to go in lockdown at least once a week because a kid in another class would start off destroying his room, and then start in on the rest of us and work his way down the hall. Adm did nothing, and his paperwork protected him. There were violence issues in my room, which was almost entirely kids with paperwork, but less severe. The few kids without paperwork learned nothing that year. Nobody did. And them and the kids with stuff like ADHD or dyslexia couldn’t understand why the behavior students were allowed to act like this and do whatever they wanted and they couldn’t. It’s not fair to anyone, students or teachers. LRE/total inclusivity does not help anyone.
Exactly, especially when teachers always use the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this same good kids as “buffer kids” to seat next to aggressive kids. So now the good kids feel as though they’re being punished for being good and their own education significantly suffers. And I can’t even fully blame teachers for it, sometimes you just need to keep order, but it’s wildly unfair to the buffer kids If you are a nice, quiet kid you might get one special award …sometime, Meanwhile, Joe gets a special prize on the day he does NOT throw a chair. When I was in middle school, there was this program we had called “pride tickets” where if you demonstrated school pride, you’d get a ticket, and at the end of the year, if you had enough tickets, you could attend a pizza party. But what really pissed me off was that they’d think to give tickets to the problem kids when they were momentarily unproblematic, and never thought to reward the kids who were just sitting in class quietly . . . which is what they’re supposed to be doing. I think some of it is generational. My grandmother was an amazing woman and raised my siblings and I, however my brother had severe mental health issues. My grandmother didn’t want to practice ABA on him, because in her mind, why should he get rewarded for something he should already do (not smear poop) and the rest of us who didn’t smear poop got no reward. This was also 15 years ago, so ABA is even more prevalent now, but I understand her point.
Some behaviors also only turn up in group settings, which cheap school districts are quick to exploit if they want to avoid an IEP. While I haven’t personally dealt with that, I have no doubt there are places where parents are neglecting their children by refusing to acknowledge these types of disabilities exist. I feel the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this tide continuing to shift towards mental health awareness but there is still a long ways to go. What kills me is the kids with a genuine diagnosis, who are high functioning and capable of self-control, who discover that their documentation lets them hurt anybody they want with no consequence Like, having ADD and autism does not make you call the teacher the n word with hard r, laugh about it, scream “FUCK YOU” at the top of your lungs when told that’s not acceptable, then sucker punch the kid next to you, then deny that anything happened at all when the APs sit you down for a talk. That’s just being an unparented, violent shithead who knows full well that the law doesn’t apply to you.
Yep! Then when the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this kid does it off school grounds and ends up in jail, people wanna talk about the “school to prison pipeline”, when in reality it should be called “poor parenting to prison pipeline”. There’s absolutely a school to prison pipeline, but this isn’t that at all, and idc what anyone says, we can’t correct behavior the way the parents can. We have hardly any power and it’s even worse if you have admin that implements restorative justice but does it incorrectly, which they almost always do. Unfortunately, not only do some parents not correct behavior, they actively encourage it or constantly give into it, which only helps to reinforce the behaviors we’re trying to mitigate. Then the moronic parents blame us for not curbing the behavior when they’re the real problem.
So. Many. Students. Weaponize their IEPs/504s and it’s ASTOUNDING to me. Child, I’ve actually read the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this document, don’t gaslight me. It makes me very much resent and dislike students, which is not a feeling I’ve ever had towards kids- even ones being horrific tantrum-throwing assholes. Like, this document is in place to help you succeed, not to give you, a child, control over my teaching practices. We have had a couple frustrating incidents like these too, where we end up debating with admin what behaviors qualify as “part of their disability” and what students genuinely are choosing to act out in a way that would get most GE students some sort of serious consequence, a suspension at the least. I have far less sympathy for students like that though I will say that is not the case for nearly all of my students I’ve had. The thing so many administrators seem to forget is that even if a behavior is genuinely part of a disability, that’s not how police are going to see it when a child is an adult. A kid who screams the n word at a police officer is going to get his ass tazed and a lengthy trip to jail. And no employer will tolerate that shit either. No one will hold their hand and give them an IEP in adulthood
Exactly, I have autism and ADHD and it never exempted me from consequences as a kid. When I was disruptive, I’d be sent home early or given lunch detention or get a talking to or experience other consequences. And you know what? I learned to stop being disruptive. This infantilization of disabled kids is utterly ridiculous, and worse yet it has impacts on the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this rest of us. When people excuse bad behavior like this under the guise of disability, then it makes people start to believe that this is inherent to those disabilities. Employers will be less likely to hire us after one bad experience with someone like that, people will be less likely to be friends with us, etc. And the fact that admin is excusing racism because of disability is disgusting. I feel awful for black teachers (and students) who are being told it’s okay they’re experiencing racism because the racist student has a disability. AUTISM/ADHD DOES NOT CAUSE RACISM!!! Sped teacher for almost 20, several states. The problem starts when they put very violent students, among general education students, who also take the brunt of the violence. When it’s explained to admin and district, they are very slow to move the child. They also understaff and overpopulate those units, which increases the danger. Also the notion that the IEP should be individualistic is harmful to the progress of the student and dangerous to those around said student. This is all done under the guise of FAPE, but in these cases is really a cash grab at the expense of students and personnel.
As someone who works in a SPED school, there needs to be some limiting principle to the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this behaviors that are tolerated. Some degree of violence is understandable and manageable, but students who are consistently violent and attack students and teachers repeatedly even after intervention shouldn’t get to be in an in person classroom with other students. Understanding, anticipating and accepting differentiated behaviors does not make being attacked or assaulted a reasonable expectation for any employee, regardless of documentation. Especially when most SPED programs are expected to provide education roughly equivalent with sending schools. You still need to hire people to actually teach subjects effectively and you still have to have a safe environment for other kids to learn. Someone who turns that environment into a legitimate war zone, particularly if they’re older and therefore more dangerous, should not have their rights privileged over the safety of everyone else. Many kids in SPED programs have outputs that are not dangerous. They have attention span issues or traumas or ticks. They don’t deserve to be in a room with students whose outputs are beating up educators and peers.
I fully believe that every student deserves a chance and should be surrounded by educators who support and adapt to them. I’ve devoted my entire miserable life to that principle. But I have certainly come to the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this conclusion that the rights of any one student, no matter how they are labeled or document, should not justify the endangerment of others. Even in alternative placements. Kids who are consistently violent need more intense, full time placements or home bound programs. Saying that is not a lack of understanding of their issues; it is a recognition of the rights of others. Most of the situations people are complaining about are inappropriate placements. If school staff are being used as punching bags something is wrong. When you watch the Brendan Depa video do you think anything is wrong there? How many concussions, bruises, bites, and slaps do you expect a staff member (many of whom are low paid) to endure? If a student frequently attacks people there is a problem. Restraint trained staff need to be available with proper procedures in place. Appropriate placement is expensive so districts cheap out.
We have a typical conflict here. Student have a right to go to school. Staff have a right not to be repeatedly attacked. I don’t have the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this solution, but it is not crazy to believe that if both cannot be achieved right not to be attacked is more important than right to school. It would be nice if there were these specially equipped schools with specially trained staff that you speak of, but where I am, there are none it’s either general public school or home and parents fight against a home service placement so we get students we aren’t equipped to work with to the detriment of staff mental health and the education of other students It certainly is a region dependent thing. I live in CA and for what flaws we have, our access to services is far superior to many other parts of the US, we’ve gotten out of state students who simply received no specialized services because coverage wasn’t available to parents who couldn’t afford to hire private services for things like behavior management, speech, etc. I will say I am in public school, it’s just that our school has a robust sped program compared to other sites in the region and so we are an effective site for the severe sped population. With all due respect- if you acknowledge that your district is out of the norm, why post your opinion on the majority of schools?
I will agree with you, but I also know that SPED positions are so hard to fill that they are putting people into those classes without the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this appropriate skills and support. In my niece’s district, a para, aide, or support person is assigned a student when they enter pre-K and they stay with that student until they graduate. This provides a lot of continuity that can be important so that the student doesn’t have to get used to a new aide every year. In my nieces case, she had just graduated and thought she wanted to work with kids. She did not have an education degree or certificate, and she thought this was going to be fun. Note, she also did not ask her uncle, who has been teaching for a minute or two about this. The student she was assigned to was in 8th grade, and his aide had just retired. He was taller, bigger, and stronger than her and outweighed her by about 50 pounds. She is a lil bitty cute thing, and this kid hit puberty early.
She was coming home every day in tears absolutely covered in bruises. It was probably a month in before I found out about it, and told her that she needed to go ask for more support, to be reassigned, or resign. There is absolutely no reason that anyone should expect to be physically beaten every day at work. We all know that the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this district knew this was the likely outcome, and did not prepare her or give her the tools to be successful. To add insult to injury, she was making not much more than minimum wage. You are absolutely right, your niece should not have been placed with a student with that kind of size difference and the reason they did it is because the position is compensated too poorly to attract appropriate candidates for the vacancy.
As always, it comes down to money. That is a really tough job, and the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this fact that the pay makes teacher’s salary look like pro-sportsball money makes it even worse. You mean that dreadful, difficult, awful job that you are paying poverty wages for? Why would anyone WANT to do it? That’s usually when they try to bullshit them with some version of “Do it for the kids!”, or “Remember your WHY!. I’m sorry, but I don’t care how much a para, aide, or teacher loves helping children, nobody wants to get the shit kicked out of them for poverty wages. Nobody. I’ve worked as a tutor on a special needs inpatient unit in a behavioral healthcare hospital…. the amount of violent behaviors I have seen go unchecked is astounding. Children sending adult staff members to the hospital. If the hospital staff can’t even perform helpful interventions in a controlled environment, how can schools?
Exactly. It’s fucking mayhem out here, and a lot of the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this kids know they can do whatever the fuck they please without consequence. I’ve told kids straight up, if I get assaulted (because that’s exactly what it is, assault) I will be calling the police, end of story. I will also defend myself since most of these kids are much bigger than me and are almost adults, I refuse to get my head bashed in waiting for the campus SRO to show up. I don’t care if Jayden is GenEd or has an IEP, I’m not ending up with permanent brain damage because they thought throwing a desk and kicking me in the head was an appropriate response to “Please put your cell phone away”. Except… inclusion. Where suddenly all those resource rooms, schools, and centers are gone and ALL students are now attending their home schools and are placed in the Gen Ed grade level that matches their age. In an effort to have heterogeneous classes, it means our small number of SPED/para/BED staff now might have, oh, 15-20 minutes to spend in your classroom. IEPs are being rewritten to say that classroom teachers will be providing all instruction.
At this point, I take the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this injuries to myself because I can’t explain to another child or their parent why it’s ok they were hit, punched, kicked, choked by their classmate. But I still gotta keep those test scores up! Even though I’m definitely teaching to the low. When I try the differentiate, I’m told I can’t do anything that gives the illusion of “othering,” so it’s “really best to have everyone on the same page.” If I have a classroom of 25 kids, and 1 of them, even once . . . Gets to be aggressive, terrorize or cause any physical or psychologist harm to any one of those other 24, then I want that kid gone. Period. Edit: Was asked to do a closer reading of the OP, and I may have misunderstood the point. GE teachers “needing to understand” may have confused me (okay, it did confuse me), so I apologize for excessive vitriol. The OP isn’t talking about Gen Ed. My fault. Thanks for following up with me!!
LRE is a joke, these days. The districts do not want to fund the Miami Hurricanes Snoopy And Woodstock Merry Christmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this SPED staff necessary to support the growing population of students that are considered SPED. In fact, many districts are actively cutting those positions and understaffing, overseeing IEP construction and telling staff to under represent the number of hours a student might need. I’ve literally seen it in IEP meetings. Districts pushing for students to be mainstreamed when they terrorize a class of general education students is not ok. Causing trauma and harm because they are protected by an IEP is NOT ok. That means we’re failing everyone- the student with the IEP AND everyone else. Parents also never hear no- when in reality a lot of schools aren’t equipped to support the supports their student needs (or the parents want). If your student cannot be in the General Ed setting, schools should not have to humor you because they are afraid of any lawsuit.
