If you’re angry at Norway for treating its prisoners this way, and not at your rulers for treating you poorly, you’re part of the problem. As a Norwegian, I gotta say that looks miserable as fuck. Being locked in there for most of the day would make me lose it big time. You all complained about covid lockdown, but are praising life in a Norwegian prison? Unless you are homeless, living a poor life is always better than a life without freedom of movement. They focus on preventing future crimes by treating prisoners respectfully, providing education and focusing on a positive/productive return to society. Their rates if recidivism are much much lower than they are in the US, where we have turned incarceration into a for profit business. this is what reformation looks like; what recidivism looks like; what making criminals into functioning healthy members of society looks like. keep in mind, many people only want to see criminals punished. those people who want nothing but a punitive system are, frankly, evil. Imagine – treating prisoners as if they are still human beings and providing them the resources for actual rehabilitation, rather than just caging someone under inhumane living conditions for years, further hardening them, and then releasing them back into the wild and expecting them to turn to anything other than what they already know.

We don’t need to take away criminals humanity to punish them, it is proven to only further the revolving door system. There is a documentary about Norwegian prisons. Gaurds from a Pennsylvanian prison went to a Norwegian prison to learn about how they do things there and potentially implement some practices at their home prison. It was pretty interesting, unfortunately I forgot what it’s called. It’s accurate. I work at a prison in eastern Norway, and most cells are just like this. They also have a shower in there And why exactly should it not be? Cheap but sturdy, functional, limited space. The constraints are very similar. There’s just a fundamental problem with the messaging here. Yes, lots of people will see this and say “look, we want to rehabilitate people who commit crimes and one great step toward that is treating them with some decency” but think about the group of hateful fucks that see this and just think “why the hell would we put these pieces of shit in a place of comfort? They broke the law they deserve to suffer.”
