I’ve been once as a part of a world religions class in uni and it was a wonderful experience. No obligation to attend the service (though we did), no one tries to push beliefs on you, it’s just an open community kitchen for all to share a free meal. And the food is amazing and flavorful too. And as noted, it’s all vegetarian, not because eating meat is necessarily against Sikh dietary restrictions, but because they want to make sure that langars can accomodate as many people from as many faiths and cultures as possible. Truly great people. Edit cause I wanted to add some more info: It really is an “all are welcome” arrangement. No one is turned away and people from all races, religions, creeds, social statuses are all treated equally. Owing to this equality aspect, when you go to a langar, everyone eats on the floor so no one can be seen as above or below anyone else. Learning about Sikhism in that class was definitely a highlight and I encourage everyone to learn more and maybe even visit a gurdwara one day

I’ll just say as a non Sikh, with a lot of Sikh friends from childhood, that gurdwaras will give you free meal but they are mostly volunteer run organizations and you should try and help out by doing some dishes or something. Sewa ( service ) was a big deal for my friends – meal was only secondary – when they went. Edit : and I am not gate keeping anyone nor will anyone there stop you if you eat and leave.
