Another thing is that in general, doing surgery on a horse is more difficult than on smaller animals. A dog with a broken leg can be carried. Moving a horse that can hardly walk to an animal hospital that performs equine surgeries is a huge ordeal. This is the reason why usually only male horses are neutered, by the way, since equine spay is pretty major surgery. You can’t just carry an 800 lb mare in and out of a clinic the way you can a female cat.

Horses can’t lay down that long. Their organs, legs and hooves aren’t meant to (a lot of them sleep while standing) and laying down too long causes a host of issues that lead to death. They may survive a major surgery but it generally weakens them physically so much that their quallity/length of life may be impacted post surgery. Horses also need to be able to stand and walk to keep proper blood flow through the legs. There is a pad on the bottom of the foot called a frog, it acts like a pump every time they move or shift weight. So even if you could somehow keep a horse sedated on its side long enough to allow the leg to start to heal you would need some sort of machine to work the legs to keep healthy blow flow. Plus you have all the other issues that come with long term sedation.
How do you transport a horse that’s been injured in such a way? They need to be able to move, to run, to graze. And he was a toddler. His brain wasn’t fully developed, so he felt that lack even more. By a few days in, he was already pacing and screaming all the time. A few weeks in, he picked up the habit of kicking his stall almost nonstop. When we’d take him out for a small walk as physical therapy, he’d basically turn into a kite, fighting the lead rope and rearing. It was dangerous and terrifying to work with him. There were honestly times when I thought it would’ve been kinder to just let him go, he was so unhappy. He finally got the okay from the vet to go from a stall to a small paddock and he had to be drugged so he wouldn’t run around like a maniac and reinjure himself. He vastly improved his attitude, but he was still a dick. He gave me the worst bite and the worst kick I’ve ever had from a horse. And it was totally only because he was bored. Some horses just can’t take stall rest. It breaks them
I looked after a horse with a foot injury and it went nuts. Tried to bite everyone who walked past and just weaved back and forth in its stall.
