I will be honest I never bothered memorizing them either, because I can just multiply it in my head. It is not a big deal to multiply two numbers. It is wasted time and effort learning how to regurgitate a table rather than focus on learning how to actually do math. My 6th grade stepdaughters writing and punctuation is horrific. I’m constantly trying to help her, make her rewrite it, reminding her to capitalize, use punctuation, write in a complete sentence, and so much more. If she turns it in as is she gets a good grade still. I’m in shock, my teachers would have laughed. Not blaming the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this teachers just wondering are teacher becoming more lenient because they’re getting pressured from above not to piss parents off? We’re very involved, have our kids in tutoring where needed, check homework to make sure they understand, help build foundational study skills (I personally hate that everything is online and try to have my kids write in a planner still because I feel it helps). Some natural consequences would still be nice. Like you do a shit job your grade will reflect it, maybe you’ll even get held back. Around us none of that happens.

I am starting to hire the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this first parts of this generation. I’m hoping it’s just a small sample size and not reflective of their generation Between 1963 and 1979 SAT-verbal scores declined 50 points. This is often attributed to change in the demographics of test-takers, a much broader segment of the population now takes the SAT tests. However, Cornell University researchers Donald P. Hayes, Loreen T. Wolfer and Michael F. Wolfe point out inconsistencies in that explanation, and suggest that simplification of school textbooks lies behind the decline in student’s reading comprehension and verbal achievement.[…]
Third, the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this number of students scoring over 600 should have remained about the same. Instead the entire distribution of verbal scores, from top to bottom, shifted to lower levels. There are now 35 percent fewer students scoring over 600. The number scoring over 700 dropped from 17,500 in 1972 to just over 10,000 in 1993, even as the number taking the test grew. Highly selective colleges report mean verbal declines of about 40 points. hOver the past three decades, the achievement of waves of American students with high intellectual potential has declined as a result of inequity in educational treatment. This inequity is the result of an extreme form of egalitarianism within American society and schools, which involves the pitting of equity against excellence rather than promoting both equity and excellence, anti-intellectualism, the “dumbingdown” of the curriculum, equating aptitude and achievement testing with elitism, -INEQUITY IN EQUITY: How “Equity” Can Lead to Inequity for High-Potential Students · C. How to buy this Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt
It’s 10000% the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this parents fault. It’s the parents responsibility to teach there kids from a young age how to read, write, do math. My son is 7 months old. I spend hours with him every day reading fun picture books, reading him an alphabet song, and even counting up to 10. We play with blocks and I tell him shapes and colors. I’m not a teacher, but a high school student. I am autistic and often have trouble attending school, but I still get good grades (all As and Bs), even though I am often behind. Out of ~100 kids in my grade, I had the highest GPA, which was not 4.0. It was kinda scary thinking that out of about 100 students, none of them got all As, and the one who scored highest missed 1+ days of school a week… In my AP Lang & Comp class right now, I have juniors who don’t use paragraphs. Paragraphs. They’ll fill an entire page with the handwriting of a deranged toddler with nary a break or pause in their off-topic rants and then wonder why I give them the lowest score possible. When I break down scores and give class feedback, they don’t listen. I have students who have gotten the same failing essay or FRQ score since September and they can’t seem to understand why.
Please for the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this love of God. PLEASE tell me this post is 99% bullshit and you’re all lying. Please tell me kids are not this far behind. They can’t read a goddamn clock, they don’t know what even numbers are, they’re in high school with 3rd grade reading skills. Like what the hell someone tell me everyone in here is lying because this is abhorrent. Why are these kids so far behind? Can people share their opinions as to why this is happening? I’m having my first child in April and I will be goddamned if he enters elementary school not knowing how to read a goddamn clock or totally stumped as to what punctuation marks are and why they are needed in English. There’s no way these kids can be that far behind.
I’ve read and experienced that the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this youngest millennials, but mainly gen z and alpha literally do not comprehend computer folders and the general file system within a computer. Their upbringing has been void of traditional computers because of their use of smart phones and tablets. It’s bad because even with all advancements, we’re a decade out from this becoming the norm of doing business and they struggle to function in the business world. I teach 5th grade and have students reading at kindergarten level. They can’t even keep up with novels we read in class because it’s so difficult for them. We are learning how to multiply fractions and decimals and they still don’t know how to multiply. Many students don’t know how to multiply multi digits and it’s making it so difficult to teach how to find volume of figures especially when they need to view volume as additive with composite solid figures. Just like you said, it’s so hard to teach the curriculum when they can’t even do the basic functions of the concepts we are teaching. And there’s not enough time in the day for one on one time/ small group time. I constantly feel like a failure.
Just because they know how to use their phones does not mean they know how to use a computer. They are not familiar with common keyboard shortcuts. They also cannot type properly. Some students type using their index fingers. I’m not a teacher, but I had a job as a summer STEM instructor a couple years ago. I have a story that this reminded me of. So, the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this level of computer literacy in my elementary/middle school aged classes at this job was all over the place. Some kids were super advanced for their age and would, for example, pointlessly argue with me over the strength of the passwords for their student accounts, and would bring concepts like encryption and brute force attacks into the conversation unprompted (we gave them really simple passwords because even the smart ones would not remember their passwords otherwise). Others were painfully inept when it came to technology. I had one interaction with a student I will never forget. This kid may have been the worst of the summer in terms of computer literacy. I or my assistant needed to stand next to him the whole class otherwise he’d immediately get lost. He straight up could not use a desktop computer. So I’m standing there instructing the class on how to navigate to the folder where we were going to save whatever project we were working on, and I tell the class to click on some icon or another. This kid takes his index finger and aggressively pokes the shit out of the monitor. It broke my brain for a second, because I could not fathom how the words “click on this icon” resulted in that action. And then it hit me: this kid couldn’t wrap his head around the desktop/folder metaphor because he’d probably only ever used touch screens with “mobile” UIs. Some of these kids don’t know how to use computers running programs, because they have only ever used tablets running apps. It’s like how older folks complained about my generation not knowing how to fix a car or drive stick or whatever. We’ve made technology so “usable” that kids who’ve never known anything else have never had to reason about how the computer is doing what it does when they interact with it.
Okay some of these you’re overreacting. Just asked my wife who is graduating law school in May what a five sided shape is called and she didn’t know. We are REALLY behind. Seriously though who gives a fuck about remember what certain shapes are called? I type with my index fingers and so does my manager and I make 6 figures in DevOps and he was promoted from being a dev too. Never makest the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this job any harder. Not a teacher, but lived long enough to watch my younger sister encounter a very different social atmosphere and environment in the same high school I attended. Hell, even the tech completely changed between my graduation in 2009 and hers in 2016. Parents are working longer hours to make ends meet, and that’s if they care about their kids at all. Most pawn their child’s education off on the system and fail to understand that it’s an equal partnership between the home and the school. General anxiety levels are much higher in students due to the 472,352 world-changing events taking place, and these kids are seeing it all live through social media. There used to be an information barrier between children and the real world that doesn’t exist anymore if they have a phone or computer without supervision. The racy topics that used to be discussed timidly among close friends can now be known without the rumor mill. I used to hear things on the bus ride home growing up that I had no way to measure if it was true or false- the rumor mill ruled all. Now, we have near instant access to anything.
A lot of tweens and teens I know don’t have a lot of hope for their future, and it’s not just because I live in a relatively impoverished area of the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this south. I lived in a similar demographic area attending high school and the kids with that kind of mindset in my day were the outliers. Now, it’s more common though I wouldn’t say it’s the norm. I’m sorry about your friend’s school. However, in Missouri we are mandated by state standards to teach those things. The students are given state mandated tests to measure what was learned. Part of the schools’ rating is determined by the results of those tests. So’ either your ‘friend’ should move to Missouri or change his story. One thing I’ve noticed is sometimes the burnt out teachers make excuses about why their students aren’t learning.
We are all taking about this yet virtually nothing is being done IRL. Why? What the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this fuck are we even doing as a society if we are not addressing such a severe issue? Teachers, can’t you unionize or something? Idk, maybe create a coalition? Don’t mean to put even more pressure on you but as an 18 year old who will have to coexist with these kids within the workforce and general society I feel as if nothing is even being done politically, socially, like genuinely no one gives a shit except you guys. Most people are so complacent and unaware (or willfully ignorant) regarding this issue (even some of MY high school teachers are low key kinda in denial) that maybe it would just be best for me to move somewhere abroad.
I have a 15 year old and yeah unfortunately I can’t help but blame those covid years when he was in critical middle school years. I just didn’t have enough time between work and people dying to also basically be a homeschool teacher. They’ll catch up but they’ll always be a good 2 or more years behind. 15-18? Well that’s definitely not a Covid issue, as covid was less than 5 years ago. Sounds like educators and parents are failing these kids, yet passing them.on. So like, what’s the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this breakdown on this? What percentage of kids are performing at an acceptable level and what percentage are performing at an “oh shit, we are at the end of society” level? As a 32y/o who feels like he was just in high school yesterday being able to do all of the above… this was wild to read. We are so so doomed…
This popped on my page on Reddit. I am not a teacher but i am a parent, how can i as a parent prevent this ? What foundations should i be laying down ? I have my 3 year old in preschool. But how i do set him up to be successful? The kids we hire between 18 and 22 cannot follow simple instructions and lack even the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this most basic social skills. Not all, but the majority. It’s almost frightening. I just saw this post recommended to me and I’ve seen the same from my new hires. They’re smart and not clueless necessarily, but they struggle significantly with basic organization or managing deadlines. It’s stuff that I never would’ve dreamed of consistently messing up when I was first starting in the workforce. There is zero retention of feedback either. These are young adults who were probably 18 or 19 when COVID started, for reference. I tutored math in high school and a junior took out their phone calculator to do 8+5. I was stunned to say the least. I feel for you when it’s confusing, but you gotta at least try a little bit
I teach math at a K-6 private school and the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this difference between the students that started there vs a public school is honestly insane. I have 11 year olds coming in as new students not knowing their basic times table vs 1st graders having mastered their 12 times table. I wouldn’t be as concerned if they had to think about a question for a few seconds but not knowing 4×4 and getting 8 or 32 as an answer instead of 16 kills me and the other math teachers inside People should not have children if they can not provide a solid foundation. I’m so sick of entitled people who are stupid about birth control and incapable of critical thinking From scouring the internet thinking students of all ages are behind, I think it’s actually certain age i.e. 10-19 year klds that are waaaayyy behind in greater numbers than say 5-9 year olds. I’m a 12th grade senior doing dual enrollment classes. Got accepted to most of my colleges already and going to major in Mechanical Engineering. This makes me sad reading all of this. I’m such a big reader, currently reading Dune. To know that people are reading on the 3rd 4th grade level in High School is disturbing.
I’m not a teacher but this came up in my feed. This is absolutely depressing. Probably because both parents work outside the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this home, kids are babysat by screens (more specifically the hand held ones) and parents themselves are addicted to screens. Nobody is interacting in the home. I work home health and I see children that are handed a phone as early as they can hold it (months old). Parents justify it because they’re “in survival mode”. But the parents are just “shutting the baby up” so they can get back to scrolling themselves. Parenthood isn’t about surviving. When your children are born your every intention in life should be to provide the best opportunity for growth and development. Sadly I have also seen how these kids are cared for. 5 and 6 year olds still in diapers. No cooked foods, just packaged snacks. (This particular family purchased a $300k home, so it isn’t an income issue.) I saw a 6 year old still getting bottles of milk. Looked severely anemic. I have reported multiple families and have gone back to find nothing has been done.
So worried about getting my first round of Gen Alpha kids next year. It’s already rough but I know it is going to be worse. What I would love is as a teaching community can we create a comprehensive list of gaps we are seeing and solutions/lessons/resources we are using to solve them. I teach Career and Technical Education and my curriculum is more flexible than most. If I need to make an adjustments to support student learning I am happy to. We pay more for our kids education, than any other country. But we don’t even make the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this top 20. If I was say a lawyer, I told you I charged the most, but most lawyers were better and way cheaper, would you still hire me? Why that for are kids then? Our kids education is more important ! Okay, I’m not a teacher so maybe I’m missing something, but this whole thread feels kind of pointless to me. Everyone is complaining about how bad the kids are these days, but it seems like everyone has just accepted that the next generation is just going to be dumb as rocks…I’m much more interested in what can be done about it.
There are countless comments attacking these kids and basically saying that they’re doomed and are going to live miserable lives. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to come across this thread as a kid. I don’t doubt that kids in general are struggling and behind, but shouldn’t our efforts be put into making up for the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this deficit instead of constantly complaining about how awful the kids are? I know teachers have limited resources and power in this scenario, but this level of hostility just seems unhelpful at best and harmful at worst. I don’t know, I just feel bad for the kids. I feel like the later generations should be supporting them and helping them instead of tearing them down. College lecturer here. I have students who can barely suss out the main argument of a short, approachably-written essay. And because they can barely get a handle on that, forget about identifying a counterargument. And, God love ’em, they’re trying, and guide them as well as I can. There’s only so much I can do.
We should have canceled all summer vacation and done three months of basic drills before going back to normal schooling post-pandemic. However, I bet most parents, students, and teachers as well would have been against the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this idea. I think we, as educators, are partly to blame. Whenever I have suggested canceling summer vacation to do drills, teachers always (with one individual exception) treat it as a crackpot idea. They say they like their summer vacation. They claim it’s too late for such measures. They say parents and students will never comply. On and on it goes. No one wants to actually have a discussion about it. Not to mention how many professors and fellow candidates in my credential program absolutely loathed ideas to fix truancy. As soon as any kind of punishment or disciplinary system is brought up, the idea is shut down. I am 100% in favor of Kamala Harris’ program to reduce truancy and encourage attendance, but unfortunately it’s not popular among teachers or district officials. A lot of the examples you’ve mentioned are baffling to me, like seriously something out of Idiocracy. However, kids not knowing how to sound out words is common and I think that one is on us.
I worked at a high school and, like you, was flabbergasted my students had no idea how to figure out spelling or pronunciation. When I encouraged them to sound out a word, they didn’t know how to do it. It wasn’t until I was speaking with another teacher I found out we were still using whole language theory in grad school, NOT phonics. So yeah, I think way too much of what is taught in teaching programs, and the Lewis Hamilton 2013 2024 End Of An Era Ferrari Formula signature shirt Also,I will get this ways in which we design our curriculums are not based in real science or with much attention to what students need to know. We don’t need “liberatory” ethnic studies (emphasis on “liberatory”), we don’t need to use “Humanizing pedagogy,” the new fad replacing SEL, we need basic math and reading skill, and a history curriculum focused on civics.
