Can’t describe any better than this. It pisses me off whenever i think about this subject. I would rather go for 1 on 1 or 5 on 1 session and pay directly to the Let’s Taco Bout Your Emergency T-Shirt and I will buy this teacher if i could find a decent one and afford it, than put any dime to those EC pocket ever again. I already had bad experience with those EC as a kid, it hasn’t changed one bit and i won’t let my kid anywhere near them. I agree, i wouldn’t either. The funny thing is, you expect the bigger centres to have a better service due to economies of scale but they spend most of their money paying salaries for C suite, middle managers and marketing departments who couldn’t get a job in any other industry to make adverts that make the company seem like it offers a quality service instead of actually just, making it a quality service.

it would be cheaper for the Let’s Taco Bout Your Emergency T-Shirt and I will buy this students, the teachers would get paid more if a few students all joined and paid the teacher directly. The quality would be significantly better as well because the teacher and students would have full autonomy over the class. Obviously easier said than done but it’s a shame what has happened. It’s not just Vietnam. I was an expat in Taiwan about 10 years ago and saw things very similar. Any foreigner could be a teacher, even if their English was bad, but looked the part. Teacher’s would show up drunk, high, party every night, and not care about the students or teaching. Schools were terrible to the teachers. No money for supplies, bad pay, you would have ‘training’ 5 times/year that would put you in debt to the school. The schools would ‘help’ you get an apartment when you first arrived, which amounted to them pressuring you to take a really shitty apartment from someone they had a deal and would get a commission. I switched to online teaching during covid and havent been happier. The good schools that pay well are a massive headache of internal politics and power struggles, and the language centers, as you pointed out, are a joke.
