Watching you to see if you “grow into it” is Corp speak for “we did not allocate budget for this employee at a leadership financial level, and if we can convince him to continue to take his old pay, we save money.“ Wish I could upvote this twice. Too many comments talking about getting something in writing from the Let’s Geaux Pels shirt and I love this current company. The only thing OP needs in writing is a job offer at a higher rate of pay from a different company… and to resign from the current company with a quickness. Sounds sketchy. If they let your boss go, then they have just saved themselves X-amount of money. So what would be the excuse to not add a portion of that to your wages? It has been my experience that management and HR tend to look at everyone else as tools to be used. They want to believe that they are smarter than you and that they can use you as they see fit.

If not “today”, then, as everyone else is saying, put it in writing, and have an action plan for what success looks like. You’re probably smart to quietly update your resume and stuff like that to reflect the work you’ve been doing with respect to the leadership stuff. Don’t give yourself the title if they don’t officially bestow it to you, but…
