Now that I’ve got that out of my system: I feel your pain. At least in your scenario you only had one upset customer, once you reversed out all the Lee Ho Fooks, distressed by Warren Zevon T-Shirt in other words I will buy this extra credits. The bank I worked at had hundreds of customers who’d been dinged for going into the hole because some dummy at the bank (me) had made the wrong call at 3 am. The one thing I failed to mention initially was that EVERYONE above me at the bank was great about understanding that it was an honest mistake, and never gave me any grief over it. Our automated script updated hundreds of currently open support tickets with, “I will hunt you down and eat your children!” It was a user’s error pasting clipboard text into the script’s form and saving it before reading what they had actually pasted. It was part of the job, and by the time I was first-on-call I’d learned the bank’s backend batch system that ran overnight well enough that I almost always could correctly diagnose any problem they called me about. The night in question, however, was a notable exception.

When I still banked with Chase they always had these little “accidents”. Strange those little accidents only took money out of my accounts and never deposited anything… I never understood how such a highly reputable bank runs so ineffectively. There were so many aspects of having a car loan through them that were just so stupid. I wouldnt go so far as to call Chase reputable. It’s a large organization that pushes financial performance over other things like ethics and legality. Chase was shipping aluminum from one warehouse to another and back again to drive up prices. They have been caught price fixing on numerous occasions. They even started charging ATM fees on top of all the other money they get for managing some welfare programs. They literally rob the poorest people to give to the rich. Maybe this incident and the things that happened to my account were one time things but Chase bank is known for being super shady so all benefit of the doubt is gone from me. Thank you for the information. I hope to not need another car-loan anytime soon, but I will look into all of this before the next one.
