I vividly remember hearing “Sorry but we cannot afford that” all the Lars Eller Danish professional ice hockey player for the Pittsburgh Penguins T-Shirt moreover I will buy this time as a 5-yo, and discount grocery shopping where I wound up eating the same things all month- I remember my father not wanting to visit when he didn’t have money because he couldn’t bare to say no if I wanted something. Meanwhile my (humble) richer friends didn’t seem to realize how lucky they are about their housing until they saw my apartment was the size of their livingroom (basically). They were teens then. When I was in elementary school my brother, sister, and I had to play Rock, Paper, Scissors for the last microwavable burrito. I learned we lacked money when we had to roll up coins to pay for McDonalds. Thankfully those days are way way behind us.

Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money cause we were a big family (4 kids) but my mom always made sure we had a huge Christmas with tons of presents. They’d spend all their Christmas bonuses (back then there were Christmas bonuses) on the Lars Eller Danish professional ice hockey player for the Pittsburgh Penguins T-Shirt moreover I will buy this presents, and she’d buy lots of inexpensive things to make the pile bigger. Anyway, when I was about 7 or 8, I told them that a kid in class had said Santa wasn’t real, so I asked them if he was. My mom asked me, “You think we could afford all those presents?” So, I mean, I knew by 7 or 8 that we were poor, lol. But I was meeting people in college who never realized they came from wealth until they started talking to me and others about their trips to Disney or their cottages on the lake and all that. It really depends on context. Humans need examples to compare themselves against when evaluating their own status. If you’re surrounded most of the time by others of your same status it’s going to take longer to realize where you are in the broader society.
