I live very close to where it happened and later heard that he’d gone back to Poland after getting out of hospital due to being violently assaulted. Nobody “knew” who did it… I also had a rape case and although im sure he had done it and she was clearly traumatised, it was impossible to find him guilty because there were no witnesses and it was her word against his. Not who you’re replying to, but anal rape is still considered rape under UK law:If it was penetration by something other than a penis, it would be sexual assault by penetration, so perhaps that. I was put on a jury where another member was a prison guard. This caused his defence to object and the jury was taken out of court while they decided if that line of questioning was allowed, which it wasn’t. After the trial continued, hi s main defence was that he was waiting at the cafe to meet his five brothers and sisters who were going to visit their parents’ grave which was nearby. When asked why only one brother could turn up as a witness to support this, he said that he’d fallen out with all of them, except for this brother. This one brother, when questioned, said that he couldn’t be sure of the date as he couldn’t read or write, and also couldn’t even tell the time. After a short deliberation we found him guilty. It took longer for us to decide who was going to be the fireman, to deliver the verdict. Nobody wanted to do it, so I volunteered. When the judge asked me to stand and stare whether we’d found him guilty, or not guilty, I had intended to answer calmly and clearly, but I found that I could hardly speak and I only just managed to croak “guilty”. After I sat down the judge read it that the man had 22 previous convictions for theft and violence, and had only been out of prison for two months before committing this offence. I can’t remember what his sentence was, but I do remember that he was going back inside. After we went back to the jury room, one of the women told me that “He was looking daggers at you after you said guilty”. Despite that, I was glad that I’d done my part for society. I can’t say that I exactly enjoyed the process, but it was fascinating to observe people in court and I feel, and hope, that we reached the correct decisions.
Not knowing he had 20+ previous convictions is pretty crazy – I don’t think I am a fan of how they manipulate what evidence you can/can’t hear. Child sexual abuse case, was truly horrible. The accused sat watching from a glazed gallery while his victim spent an entire day’s proceedings describing what he’d endured and how it impacted his subsequent life. The only time I’ve been called up, I went to the court, passed through the security, got stopped. Had a pen knife in my pocket that I forgot about. The security guard called a couple of cops over who take me into a small interview room and proceed to tell me off, take my details etc.. Obviously I’m absolutely shitting myself at this point. Eventually they ask what I’m in court for today and I tell them jury service. They suddenly lighten up; turns out they had assumed I was some kind of hardened criminal. So they let me go, woohoo! (I didn’t get picked to do the jury service itself, but when the accused swaggered in dressed in a full body, bright blue shell suit, palms facing backwards, I decided he was guilty then and there, so it’s probably just as well they didn’t pick me on middle class impartiality grounds.)
If you do end up on a trial, don’t be at all late. I did it a couple of years ago, attempted murder case, guy defended himself which went about as well as you would have imagined. I was the foreman (forewoman?) of the jury, the others on the jury selected me to do this solely on the basis of my job (teacher). I found the whole thing really really fascinating, reading the minutiae of the law to assist in making the judgement etc. i was fortunate that it wasn’t a distressing case in spite of the charges, I had a mate coincidentally doing it at the same time and he had a horrible case involving abuse and incest and it really upset him. So it’s luck of the draw in terms of what case you get. I was originally picked for a case that ended up being a terrorism trial (was at Belmarsh) but had to excuse myself due to the predicted duration of the trial. Was a bit annoyed when I found out later as that would have been extremely interesting.

It was a burglary case, on day 2 there was something so ridiculous in one of the defendants statement it was laughable. We went for lunch and the defendants changed plea so case closed. Back into selection for something else but wasn’t picked for that one. Maybe if the communication was brought kicking and screaming into the 1900s with the use of a telephone I would have known it was happening. Just binned the lot and never heard from them again. I would happily do it, I just need to know when it is with a bit of notice.

Asked to give judgement, all jurors say not guilty immediately as not a jot of actual evidence was presented the whole trial. Takes us 5 minutes to decide and another 25 chatting so it seems a more acceptable amount of time. My employer did make a mistake on my expense form though, and I got paid more than my normal pay rate for the 3 days, which was nice. Last time I did it ,I remember it coming up to lunchtime and my stomach was growling pretty loud had to keep coughing to hide it, a few jurors even started to hide their laughter.

I was on a 6-week trial and picked to be on a jury on my 2nd day. The first couple of days were a bit daunting as everything is unknown and seems so serious and formal, but after a few days I got to know my fellow jurors, we spent 6 weeks together so made some good friendships, the court ushers were really friendly and relaxed so made it all seem less scary and the court security were a good bunch. With it being so long, I was worried about getting a really nasty trial, but the whole process was really interesting and I learned a lot. Some of my relatives had done it before me and hated all the waiting around and found it boring, but as someone with a full on job and 2 kids, I enjoyed the peace and being able to sit and read before we were called into court! The days can be quite short, sometimes we would arrive in the morning and told we weren’t needed and could go home. We found our defendant guilty and I would have liked to have found out about the sentencing but we weren’t given any details on when that would be so I have no idea what the sentence was! As we were there for so many weeks, we got into the swing of things and felt relaxed and part of the furniture. Surely you have to declare that you have an impairment that could significantly impact on your ability to act effectively as a juror. I did it 5/6 years ago.. someone told me before it’s a bit like going to the airport, and I could see the similarities. You go through security much like at the airport, you are then shown into a waiting room (departure lounge) with everyone else that has been called up. Don’t be surprised to see up to 80 in the room. Some are already on a case just waiting for it to start again, some like you are starting there first day, and some people have been sat there waiting for nearly 2 weeks without being selected. So.. bear in mind just because you have been called up doesn’t necessarily mean you will sit on a jury. I got selected more or less straight away, initially they call up 15 people, you stand in the court and the judge will explain what the case is about, the names of the people involved and how long it is likely to take. Then they will call 12 names from the 15. If you have a reason why you can’t be on the jury, like you know someone involved, then you pass a note to the judge explaining why. If he/she agrees then you get switched for 1 of the 3 that didn’t get selected. Once the case has finished you get taken to a room and you are literally locked in with the rest of the jury discussing the case until you all reach a verdict. Mine was a rape case, a couple in a relationship where he allegedly raped her on I think 3 or 4 occasions. He also allegedly beat her. As it turns out he also had another family, so she was just his bit on the side (for want of a better phrase). As much of a dick this guy clearly was, I did find it really difficult, all the evidence we had was a folder of thousands of WhatsApp messages between them, some messages after the alleged dates made it clear something had happened.. but it wasn’t clear he raped her.. the relationship went on for about 2 years. Anyway.. that’s my experience of jury service. Also, if the accused isn’t on remand in prison before the trial he/she are free to walk in and out of the courthouse like you. I was stood in a queue in Tesco buying my lunch during the break and he was at the checkout next to me 😬 After the case was over I was told I wasn’t needed again, lasted a week.
