My first gf was lovely but super Christian, super sheltered, and super timid, none of which described me. I feel bad in retrospect pulling her into spaces and situations she probably didnt love (not just sex, but smokey concerts or loud house parties, etc). I’d like to think I helped expose her to a wider world, but the difference in relationship stress when I later met my highly capable wife was night and day

My first real relationship was with my high school sweetheart. I learned from him what love was. I’m incredibly grateful and possibly the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. If someone belittles you and makes you feel like you’re walking on eggshells/has a hot temper over minor things.. it’s not gonna work. I thought I was flawed and in order to receive love I had to love a flawed person. But the pain of dating them wasn’t worth what I thought love was.
