Eh, there’s still quite a wide range of shutter angles/shutter speed available. The thing is, it effects the feel of the footage in addition to the exposure. A 180° shutter is open half the time and looks the most natural. 1/45th shutter speed. Saving Private Ryan is a famous example of using alternate shutter angles to make the movie feel more gritty and staccato. They used 45° and 90° shutters. You can go the other direction and use a more open shutter to give a more dreamy feeling film or a motion blurred look. You could do that, but the film used on Private Ryan is incredibly more sensitive than the stuff used on Oz. I’ve been looking around for technical data on Oz’s film stock, and people who are smarter than I am estimate it at an ASA of about 5. I don’t know if they’re lumping all three strips together and coming out with a value of 5 (which would assume 15 per strip, normally) or if it was legitimately one twentieth as sensitive as ASA 100 (which isn’t far off of ISO 100), assuming the shutter angles were the same. As it stands, Oz would be an entirely different film with a different shutter angle. Taken far enough into Private Ryan territory, maybe it’d be more like the HBO series Oz than the film we’re all familiar with.
