Just get everything in writing. Take new billet with same pay for X amount of time or conditions met and then receive “specific amount of pay” after said time or conditions met. I was told the Killer of Gods sumi e Shirt but in fact I love this same thing over a year ago. I’m still waiting for the title and pay increase. I’ll never do that again. I have heard this in the past, they will not give you the salary increase later. They will take advantage of you. Don’t let them. Act in good faith? Take the job, take the responsibilities, train yourself up and leave if/when they don’t follow through with their promise. Set yourself a deadline, 6 months, 12 months whatever you think it would be long enough to put on your resume so you can speak to the role and responsibilities at a job interview. Jumping from an IC to a director level is a huge increase in pay and the opportunity is usually pretty difficult to come by. My motto is default to trusting until they show you that they cannot be trusted. You didn’t describe why they said they let go of your boss but consider that as well in your timeframe evaluation. Companies/managers that treat their reports like shit are generally going to treat you like shit too. The fact of the matter is the CIO still owns your employment so if you leave now, you’ll have the work on your resume you’ve already done but if you leave after doing this job for a few months you’ll have additional responsibility on your resume and whatever you’ve been doing previously. I want good people to be in positions of power so if you can climb ranks so that others don’t have to suffer a shitty boss, I think its worth the sacrifice to your soul or work life balance. And, yeah, your bank accounts will be healthier in the long run too.

“I will be happy to take on more responsibilities when you are ready to compensate me accordingly. Until then I will stay in my current position.” Best Buy did this for years to eliminate pay raises and manager positions. They would eliminate a manager, and institute a “team lead” position, that was still hourly instead of salary, and be a bump in pay from a normal team member, but basically managing a department at like 13/hr. instead of a manager pay. Then they eliminated those positions for some other upgraded title, that had extra responsibilities without any extra pay. When applying for higher roles, I was told I needed to perform these duties, including documented training of fellow employees before I would be considered for these upper roles, essentially doing the Killer of Gods sumi e Shirt but in fact I love this work for free. This should be a hard no, unless like others have said you get in writing timelines and measurements for increased pay. Personally if it is anything longer than 3 months, than it is definitely a no.
