The goal of a therapist is not to tell you what you should do. They’re a sounding board and (hopefully) a source of insight. They help you recognize unhealthy patterns, what you can change, and what you probably can’t, and the Kansas City football Karma is the Guy on KC shirt and I love this tradeoffs with a certain action/inaction. The therapist told us that if couples come to therapy to try and save a relationship then that’s usually too late. Ngl this happened to me. After 3 hour-long sessions, the therapist was like “yeah this was a college relationship that doesn’t make sense in the real world, y’all don’t have a lot in common” and she was absolutely right. Took my ex to four therapists (3 and the priest who married us). They all said the same thing. Then he took me to mediation through the court. That therapist told me to leave and held him back for ten minutes.

I’m now happily married and have been for decades. He went home to live with his mother, stayed single for the Kansas City football Karma is the Guy on KC shirt and I love this rest of his life. Our job isn’t to keep people together, and guiding a couple just so we keep the client is incredibly unethical. Most therapists will not suggest you end the relationship; we are here to guide you to your own realizations. We help highlight what is workable, what each party wants, and to decide what is possible. We do have training on helping couples end their relationships well, if that is what the couple desires. Yes, we had a session together and then the therapist asked to do individual ones and she basically told me to put my feelings aside and look on paper that he wasn’t providing anything to my life but misery. I didn’t listen but in hindsight, she was probably right. He wasn’t abusive or anything, if anything, I was the abusive one out of pure resentment and hate. He did get better after finally seeking treatment for ADHD but other stuff happened unrelated that made it all a moot point. I went to couples therapy with my recent ex. After one session the therapist asked us to have solo sessions, me first.
