As a person who is not a mom…you went miles and miles beyond what I would’ve done for this guy. Picking up his stuff? Maybe once or twice then he has to do it or we are having a talk. U didn’t dump him because he can’t cook you dumped him because he was a child and not an equal partner. I hope your best friend raises her standards because this is really basic. I shudder at what she thinks is a healthy relationship. I dated a guy years ago who didn’t cook (honestly, I have no idea if he couldn’t or just didn’t) and honestly it was easy half the week I would cook, half the week he would get take away/ we went out. But he still always helped with dishes and tidying up after. You didn’t break up with him because he couldn’t cook, you broke up with him because he is inconsiderate. NTA This relationship dynamic seems more mother-son than two adult partners. You’re not in charge of picking up after him. Of course in relationships there is a trade-off (I honestly am nervous about cooking but it could be my eating disorder) but I’ll clean anything no problem, do laundry and vacuum and contribute in other ways that I can, like obviously paying my half of the rent and buying groceries. You’re stressed out, overworked, already caring for children yourself. You don’t need to add another ‘child’ in your life. You probably were stuffing this down for awhile and it just came out in a snap, and I can’t say I would feel differently, based on the circumstances. Honestly maybe this is the reality check he needs to get himself in order and not be taken care of by his partner while doing nothing to help out.

IF it was just cooking and he did other stuff and pulled his fair weight and that was a deal breaker for you then you should absolutely break up with him. Your standards are up for you to decide. After reading the rest of it I’m surprised you put up with him for as long as you did. I think there is nothing wrong with expecting an adult to behave like one. You’re not his mother and it’s not on you to teach him how to take care of the basics.
