I’ve both used naloxone and gotten them into treatment and been there for them after rehab to support them with housing and community. There are 14 kids, from rough backgrounds, who I have inspired to be greater than themselves, who’ve attended post secondary despite statistically it being extremely unlikely they ever would. (I’ve used naloxone on way more “kids” and adults in the last twelve years and I don’t know how they have turned out, so I guess I saved their life in the moment, but it’s a lot different then seeing them actually succeed in life years after.)

As a woman in the Just Because I’m Awake Doesn’t Mean I’m Ready Cat shirt in contrast I will get this eyes of many, including my own mother, I’m a “failure” be caused I’ve never had kids of my own. I’ve done so much more good with my life not having kids than having kids. Yet…I’m constantly judged as a woman for not having them. No regrets and never will have any. We have a full life! We travel, we spoil our nieces and nephews rotten, we indulge in our own hobbies. I think it helps that both our families are from Europe. There is this balance of being involved in a large extended family, while also having our own lives. So we get the best of both worlds. We get the to be by ourselves and have grand world adventures. And then we have a wedding or family reunion a couple times a year, where we get to see our family and I get to hang with my cousins who are like built in best friends. I don’t know how to explain it right. Life is what you make of it, and we have full lives. Not having children doesn’t make us feel empty. We are surrounded by loved ones, while also having our own space as well. And for those of you fence sitting, I will only say this. History always repeats itself. Nations rise and fall, and I’m afraid we are unfortunately on the wrong side of history at the moment. I think things will get much worse before they get better, and I can’t imagine the pain of goings through the coming years, worried about the uncertainty of the future for any child I might have. On the rare occasions that I do feel down, I look closer and realize it’s a longing and desire for the family I didn’t have as a child myself. My personal issue says would have made me a terrible mother.
