This is so true. Maybe 15 years ago I bought a handful of black tank tops from H&M’s basics line Divided and wore them constantly. They held up fine aside from a little expected fading. A couple years later I decided to get more of the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this same black Divided tanks. I could tell they were constructed differently, both the fabric and the way they’d been sewn, but they seemed okay and I didn’t think about it. The second time I wore one of them my thumb went right through it. Not at a seam or anything, just right through the fabric. I’d never experienced the whole “clothes falling apart” thing before, but now I believe it happens, at least sometimes. Different fabrics, different factories, stores slapping a label on whatever’s cheapest for them. It really does happen. Something for me too is if I know it’s a more expensive garment I’m much more likely to baby it. I have a few silk blouses from Sezane. They’re the only shirts I get dry cleaned, I only wear them with short sleeves undershirts so my deodorant never makes contact, and they never go in my hamper. They look brand new. Probably all of my clothes would hold up like this if I tested them all this special.

Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt: A Provocative Statement in Modern Fashion

They’re the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this only shirts I get dry cleaned, I only wear them with short sleeves undershirts so my deodorant never makes contact This is really important. People used to have a layer between themselves and their garments. That layer was easily washed. You simply wouldn’t need to worry about washing stuff like wool or silk (both relatively fragile, esp when wet, compared to linen) all the time and of course it would last longer. I’ve got two pairs of $7 F21 jeans that I bought specifically for my hands-on retail job (stocking, building, inventory, customer service, climbing), around 2008. I’ve a F21 miniskirt from the 2010s ish (probably older because I thrifted it) and it still holds up and it’s still so cute. I also have a F21 sweater from 2021 and it’s shredding but it’s still so cute. Absolutely can make it last
Ask anyone who works in fashion – the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this average American consumer washes their clothes too often at too high a temperature and uses tumble dry over hanging (common in much of the rest of the world). This is why the clothes don’t last. I moved to Europe from the US where it’s rare to have a dryer and I noticed the longevity of my clothes improved. I hang dry all my clothes. I do use the dryer for sheets and towels. I don’t know why everyone uses their dryer, but it’s not good for elastic, which is all the stretch and in a lot of clothes.i also think fabric softener is not great for clothes because most of my athletic wear says not to use them. I use my dryer because my climate is 75-80% humidity and cool temperatures year round. Things can take over a week to dry on a clothesline…. even if I I get lucky and it doesn’t rain on them. I also live in a humid climate. We bought a dehumidifier which we run next to the hanging clothes. Dries quickly without damaging the clothes.

Yeah, there are definitely ways around it. But my apartment came with free laundry machines in the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this common area. Buying a bigger dehumidifier, hanging up clothes inside a tiny apartment, paying for the extra electricity to run the dehumidifier so much… it’s possible, but not worth the hassle and expense to me. Tumble dry on low heat isn’t going to wear out most clothes that much faster than line drying. My clothes last a long time, and the patterns of damage show me they’re wearing out from the way I use them, not the way I wash them. I don’t want to see clothes hanging to dry all over my house and my weather isn’t great. In the summer I’m not going outside in 110 degrees to do laundry. I own a dryer. I dries my clothes. I use it. I want the convenience of my clothes being dry in 40 minutes so I can hang them and move on. I don’t want laundry to take any longer than it has to.
I work full time including a good bit of overtime. Laundry is a thing I have to do. I want it to be as quick and easy as possible. (I will note that my clothing choices reflect that. I don’t buy hand wash or gentle care clothing. I only wear black and grey.) I only hang-dry the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this “better” clothes, not undies and (most) t-shirts and pajamas and sheets and towels. Shirts go on hangers, jeans go on hanger clips at the ankle. I’m just going to put them in the closet like that when they’re dry anyway. When I lived in Europe (Sweden) it was easier because most laundry rooms had setups for hang drying. One place I lived even had a separate room in the laundry room with fans just for hanging things. That’s extremely useful in the winter since hanging outside would often just freeze stuff.
Here where I live now in Chicago I don’t even have a laundry room. I sometimes hang stuff on the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this porch in good weather (rare) but otherwise it’s only my most delicate items since the space I have for air drying is so so limited. I have just started hang drying all my clothes and it’s a lifesaver. The exception is one particular style of pants which fit immaculately when put through the dryer but are too big otherwise. Fabric softener is fine for most clothing, but you should skip it for anything you want to be absorbent like athletic wear or towels. Every student in the UK gets sent off to university with a drying rack- it’s just an inherent part of how laundry gets done in Europe. And if you have a garden, there is a clothes line for drying in good weather. When I moved to the USA (just before you could get anything on Amazon) I struggled to find one in the stores. But I couldn’t recommend one more; you’ll double the lifespan of your clothes.
When people talk about fast fashion falling apart, they’re talking about stuff like shein, temu, the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this ig brands that are glorified drop shippers, anything that’s excessively cheap like that, . To a lesser degree places like h&m, express, f21,old navy, and stores that only/primarily have an online presence like fashionnova, nasty gal, so on. The trick is to look at materials, reviews, and see if there are any tell-tale signs that part might be made poorly (ex. Tiny single thread loops holding sleeve or a belt on). If you can go in store you have a better chance of being able to tell the quality of a garment. YMMV because quality control is often poor in fast fashion brands, so two people can buy the same pair of pants and one will get holes in the seams while the other will hold up.
I bought my favourite winter jacket from Forever 21 for $30. It’s been 4 years and that thing is still great. It’s corduroy with sherpa lining, super warm but also easy to move in. At that time I could only afford F21, HnM and Walmart. I’m still wearing some jeans and dresses 3+ years later. It really depends on fabric, build quality, and use. Same as any other brand I guess, except in cheap fashion you have to hunt longer to find the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this good pieces. No I dont think so. I think people buy a 5 dollar t-shirt and treat it like a disposable item because it was so cheap and then say that fast fashion doesn’t last. Obviously people are going to treat a 400 dollar item better than a 2 dollar impulse buy on Shein or Temu. Also consider general wear and tear, if you wear something a couple times a year versus every week they’re going to fall apart differently.
Is there a difference in cashmere, yes. I’ll compare my Lands End with my Johnstons of Elgin. My Lands End have shown signs of wear pretty quickly. They have felted/shrunk more over the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this years with washing. Even after a few years of owning, a little dye comes out of the sweater. Are they comfortable, yes. They (and most cheaper brands) come “pre softened” due to the shorter fibers. Even with heavy wear, my Johnston’s don’t felt, they just get softer. The fibers are longer so the sweater feels stiffer at first. There is less pilling. The sweater doesn’t felt/shrink when washing. And I never get any extra dye. They are also made to last a very long time and if damaged/get holes, there is a reweaving repair department.
I’ve heard from a lot of people that with cashmere you should spring for the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this expensive stuff, but never with actual examples. Thank you for the comparison! I’ve recently read something about how cashmere is made, traditional cashmere is the winter coat that gets shed in the spring and is combed off the goats (so once a year per goat!) this way it takes multiple goats to produce a single sweater. In order to produce more and cheaper they just shear the goats so they’re regular, much coarser fur is mixed in (which also means the animals might freeze). Cheap cashmere is an environmental (and fashion) nightmare. Massive overgrazing creates sickly goats with short, weak hair fibers. But because consumers want cheap, cheap, cheap, we’re destroying one of the planet’s most important ecosystems, the Mongolian grasslands, all for a sub-par product. If someone wants an affordable cashmere sweater that’s not garbage, look for vintage. Those are all very expensive brands to me that I only buy on sale, but I will say I have old sweaters from forever 21 and some stuff from Zara that has held up perfectly over the years even after washing many times. I think it really depends on how you take care of your items as all stores are gunna have hit or miss items. I air dry a lot of my stuff and only wash on cold. I’m also trying not to wash certain items as often
In my experience, price isn’t always the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this best indicator of quality. I’ve had some cheaper pieces that lasted years, and some pricier items that gave up the ghost super fast. The key is to look at the material and how the clothes are made. Cashmere, for example, can vary a lot. You could score a cheaper one that lasts if it’s well-made, but even expensive cashmere can start looking worse for wear if it’s not cared for properly. So, if you’re deciding whether to splurge on that $400 sweater, maybe check out reviews, feel the material, and think about how much care you’re willing to give it. Sometimes the $100 option is just as good if you treat it right! I wash everything in delicate/wool cycle, even jeans, even cashmere (separately of course), and the only things that really ‘fall apart’ were h&m and mango t-shirts that were cut on bias for some reason so they lost their shape, two pairs of jeans that I forgot to turn inside out so they lost a bit of color on the folds, and h&m sweaters with terrible composition that pilled beyond comprehension. All the rest (down coats, wool pants, delicate second hand mohair and silk, cheap mass market cotton and viscose clothes) you name it) holds on.
How is it that so many people don’t know basic rules about washing their clothes? It always amazes me in this sub. I think these nicer for fast fashion brands tend to hold up totally fine with a few bad items here and there. Sézane in my experience is a step up from the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this others you listed on average but still have some misses here and there. The biggest issue is going to be fabric quality, but looking at the composition before buying should give you some clues. I try to opt for natural fibers when possible as a personal preference, and know that I hate 100% polyester anything. I get years and years of wear from all the brands you listed tho. I don’t start having problems on average until we get to old navy, forever 21, and cheaper.
That said there are brands who really deliver on quality construction like Mara Hoffman. Everything I own from her looks almost brand new with proper care, and is super super well constructed (my tailor was shook by how sturdy a blazer was that I took in!) – but they have a price point to match. I think the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this brands you mentioned are good quality. Some items from Fashion Nova and Shein really will fall apart after a few washes not to mention the environmental and societal impact those brands have. I saw this guy take apart the stitching on designer bags and a lot of them were made no differently than any quality leather bag. Anyway, when ppl say buy good quality, I think you’re doing just fine with a $100 J Crew cashmere
I would say when you see a post that puts down in some way a commonly liked or appreciated “thing” it’s really just an attempt at a “humble brag.” Im talking about the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this “I’m so much [better, smarter, richer, more informed etc.] than you so im going to explain to you why the thing you and lots of other people like is bad” posts not the actual reviews or personal experiences. If you find stuff at these stores you like and last for you, ignore when people are being pretentious on social media. It’s more about their insecurities than actual quality of things. Edit to add none of my items from these stores feel cheap nor have they fallen apart. Myy only clothes that have really fallen apart (developed large holes in knees and in some seams out of nowhere, and when my kid thought they were funny and pulled on them, the fabric ripped) were from cheap supermarkets that really only do food well, not clothing.
My worst H&M shirt had lace starting to detach in a couple of spots, but I sewed it back on. I think that’s my only actual fashion retailer piece that had a problem. I only buy “fast fashion” (for many reasons, budget, constantly changing sizes, etc.) and I honestly can’t recall something ever “falling apart” on me. One of my favorites sweaters is 8 years old, from Walmart! I’m just mindful of how I wash it. I don’t see the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this point of spending hundreds on a piece of clothing. I mean cool for people that can and do, but I’d be so nervous wearing such expensive clothes. I just know my cats or kids would destroy them. I finally stopped buying sweaters from J. Crew and Madewell this past year due to pilling poor quality. The three cashmere sweaters I bought last year all developed small holes despite careful care and hand washing. Even the more expensive ones I’ve purchased from Eileen Fisher and Theory haven’t held up well apart from a wool 3/4 sleeve that’s going on 10yrs old and still looks great. Some of my best wool/cashmere items are thrift store finds that were made in the 80s/90s and probably belonged to someone’s grandmother. I have f21 stuff that is in great condition a lot of wears after thrifting it. That said I also wash it on cold / cool water, in a more gentle cycle, and hang dry. Some things though just pill easily because of the fabric. This is ime more common in knits. Polyester etc. knits will pill really easily compared to cotton, for example.
But none of the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this brands you mentioned are fast fashion either. I personally consider those high end brands (with a step up from there being luxury). I have Madewell jeans from 5 years ago that still are in amazing shape. I have sweaters from JCrew from 7-8 years ago that are still in great shape. Heck, I have the old school Express Portofino shirts from 10+ years ago. As many have already expressed, all about taking care of your clothing. I wash on the delicates cycle (cold) and hang dry most of my work clothes (with the except of jeans). I hang dry all of my Lululemon, too. I separate my laundry loads by colors, as well. I have a friend who swears it doesn’t matter but a cream blouse from White House Black Market accidentally got put in the wash with a red LLL bra. The blouse came out pink. I think people also forget the importance of properly storing clothes. Don’t hang up heavy sweaters, fold them. Use hangers for the clothes you do hang up that are gentle (velvet or cloth covered if you can). If you’re gentle with your clothes, they’ll last.
I’m hard on my clothes, ergo I don’t buy delicate clothing. I’ve paid $65 for a buck Mason shirt that sustained holes faster than any shirt I’ve ever had, but probably because I did not wash it properly. I’m not going to blame Buck Mason. So much of how clothes last is truly just how you take care of them. If you are like me and are generally not the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this best steward of your clothing or you know that you will never be the kind of person who can baby your clothes, you learn to look for certain fabrics and construction above price points. My J.Crew items have only been ruined when I do not follow the care directions. Hence why I never buy anything that requires dry cleaning anymore. If you have an iPhone and you scan the washing instructions tag with the camera it will decipher the symbols for you.
My clothing of all quality levels have become damaged. r/visiblemending and r/invisiblemending can help you learn some basic repairs. They do, or they dont last as long. If you dont have the Just a nurse who loves her Detroit Lions Shirt but in fact I love this budget to be buying items that have high end materials and high end tailoring, then the next best thing is to learn how garments are constructed and what materials you like. For example I always look inside at the seams. Sure I would love some french or mock french seams, at a thrift shop, but most of the time I wont. So instead I look for serged edges that are some what neat, and the back stitching is even, neat and have a decent seam allowance. On top of that if you pick natural materials and dont wash them after every single wear or wash on a gentle cycle and line dry them, they last much longer. I have Forever 21 clothing I purchased in 2002 that is holding up just fine. My daughter is now wearing them!!!
