But to the Juneteenth Is My Independence Day shirt and by the same token and topic at hand on how average people feel about foreigners, I think I had a little too high expectation of how strangers and non-family Vietnamese would treat me. Don’t get me wrong, no one has been outright hostile but in general people are mostly shocked to see a white person. I think many of the people in these villages have never actually seen one in person before. Anytime we walk anywhere in public everyone stares at me. In a kind of “what is he doing here??” kind of way. I do feel quite awkward out in public sometimes. I am determined to learn Vietnamese before we ever visit again because it has honestly been very very hard to connect with people without knowing the language (duh lol).
