I live in Washington now and you can’t get a decent crawfish boil up here. It’s illegal to import crawfish live, so you have to get the Juneteenth 0619 Represents Freedom shirt in addition I really love this local ones which are expensive and can be hard to find. I’ll usually cook up about 30 lbs in the front yard if I can get my hands on them. But they’re also about $10 a pound. Also, I’d just like to say if you get caught down south calling them Crayfish, those coonasses will laugh you out of the country. I’m allergic to shellfish, and watching her and my stepdaughter buzzsaw through pounds of the things is always vaguely disturbing. Growing up in ETX/LA the only word similar to hillbilly or hick that isn’t a fighting word from a stranger is coonass. Depends on the context. If it’s said in a vacuum, no big deal. You call me a “stupid coonass” those are fighting words. I moved here from Houston, and my friends have been sending me all the crawfish season photos. Monsters, all of them. I went to a fast food restaurant just outside Baton Rouge that happened to be hosting a child’s birthday. Grandpa was there. He was wearing a crawfish hat. Local cajun place (very authentic, when I took my cajun memere (grandma) there for dinner once she actually knew the owner Mr. Thibodeaux from ‘back home’). Obviously they serve a lot of crawdads. The waitstaff wore T-shirts (available for sale) that had the restaurants logo on the front, and on the back said either:

In Michigan the areas where “crawfish” are more common seem to largely be where Southerners settled moving up during the wars looking for work. In my experience, this is a point of contention in Michigan. I’ve always called them Crayfish, but I definitely know some disreputable types that would call them crawdads That map really checks out with where I’m from, most go for crawdad but no one will bat an eye at crawfish (I’m from the Midwest, most of these area maps for different words or traditions end up citing something I’ve literally never heard of right on top of where I grew up) There are also other countries! We would use the term crayfish and none of those others in Australia, though we also call them yabbies.
