In person purchases for me have a much higher success rate. Poshmark, I would say 3 out of 8 purchasers worked for me. My hit rate is usually pretty high for online apps, EBay is close to 100% and depop coming in second. I used to be a thredup enthusiast but out of every piece I loved, 3-4 were huge misses. I don’t get to shop secondhand in person anymore, but, I think I had more misses with those as well since it led me to impulse purchase more often. I like this question a lot. Don’t have exact numbers, but I think my eye for vintage is better than my eye for new stuff, maybe because I am not enthralled by their newness, or distracted from the fact I really don’t need that by appealing online marketing. While I have gotten rid of some vintage items, it’s notable that most of the ones I ended up getting rid of were because I had gained weight or my body shape had changed. In particular, I had this amazing yellow tweed skirt which I still miss and a magenta Betsy Johnson velvet dress that I also got rid of (this one I regret because I’m pretty sure it would fit me again now). I also seriously regret getting rid of a few items, notably a black velvet blazer (it was slightly too large in the bust, but I found a tailor literally the week after I donated it), and an oversized blue silk shirt with a chain pattern on it (“It’s 2017 and I need to get into tasteful minimalism”). Only secondhand/vintage items I don’t regret getting rid of are a plaid skirt (purchased at value village) that was OK, but I upgraded to a pleated one in a nicer quality wool; and a pair of Everlane loafers which I got on ebay but were slightly too small in the toebox and gave me blisters every time I wore them, despite my arsenal of anti-blister sticks and specialized band-aids.

By contrast, I have virtually no regrets about any items I sold or donated over the Johnny Tv & Taya Valkyrie I Want My Mr. And Mrs. Tv Shirt But I will love this years that were purchased new. Like someone else mentioned I try to find items that fit my measurements as close as possible, but if I see an occasional “can’t pass it up deal” not in size I only purchase if the size is larger than mine so that the item can be tailored.
