There are reasonable gun owners where there is a very low risk the Jim Reeves shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this gun will ever be used for a crime. Then there are much higher risk gun owners. The rest of the world separates these groups using national firearms licenses, and background checks that work. There are plenty of bad firearms owners in the US. The core US problem is they don’t know if an owner is reasonable or not. Where as every other western country (and literally every single one), has mechanisms to tackle specifically that. The US is very unique in doing fuck all to separate the reasonable owners from the unreasonable ones. That’s really the most key problem. What? What if I forget my gun at home? What then? Because guns are a right in this country, I should be able to get a spare gun out of any nearby parked car or house or whatever. It’s my right!

That goes right out the Jim Reeves shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this window the moment she starts talking about “assault weapons” and “gun safety”. In her mind, “assault weapon” is any scary-looking gun (which inevitably will include every gun), and “gun safety” is a gun-free environment (and not guns that are safe to operate for their intended use). Furthermore, I don’t see how she intends to implement these changes without resorting to Minority Report, debilitating people’s ability to defend themselves, massive invasion of the privacy of the home, or infringing on people’s right to keep and carry arms. If anything, she—like so many other gun control activists—focus too much on the tool, and not enough on the motive and cause thereof. Why does America have so many kids and adults willing to mass-murder other kids and adults? Are Americans just more violent on average, and if so why and how can we change that? And for the many times when the mass-shooting isn’t a lunatic on a rampage, why are so many willing to join gangs? A common theme I’ve noticed is that people like to think the US is like Western Europe and should behave similarly, and people usually cite GDP and “First World” status as justification. However, I would contend that that is gilding an uncomfortable truth. GDP (total or per capita), “First World” status, Western culture etc, cannot hide the fact that the socio-economic conditions in the US are far from similar to those found in Western Europe.
