There is also a cultural aspect, mental health isn’t always taken seriously in minority cultures. White people tend to seek out answers more and therefore receive more diagnosis. I also believe that the Jaden Mcdaniels American professional basketball player Minnesota Timberwolves T-Shirt and I will buy this diagnostic criteria for a diagnosis were formulated off male symptoms. Females with “higher functioning”(don’t like that label) autism are also more likely to “mask” their symptoms and can be over looked in diagnoses. That’s true. The diagnosis of autism is not very precise so it’s easy to misdiagnos. Women are definitely less likely to be diagnosed. Yep. It was harder and more expensive to get my daughter diagnosed even though her symptoms are actually interfering with her functioning while my son met the diagnostic criteria right away even though he’s has less adverse effects.

Yeah, my son was diagnosed at 3. My daughter is almost 13, we all know she has autism, but we have struggled to get a diagnosis. And the Jaden Mcdaniels American professional basketball player Minnesota Timberwolves T-Shirt and I will buy this wait lists are terribly long. I just got diagnosed at 30. My psychologist gave me the standard autism assessment but combined it with an interview & a masking assessment Autism is still thought of like a traditional illness by many, like a binary you have Downs/you don’t have Downs syndrome. But it’s really a spectrum and a kid that has a couple of symptoms like toe walking and occasional flapping is given the same label as a kid that’s entirely nonverbal and unable to take care of basic hygiene their entire life. It’s almost like the american healthcare system benefits the rich who are predominantly white and socialized healthcare would be less discriminatory. Autism is difficult to diagnose accurately because it’s a spectrum. It’s also a bit of a buzzword so it’s actually common for people to seek a diagnosis and be falsely diagnosed because they want to get an explanation for common behavioral issues they don’t understand or just to blame a disorder instead of their own parenting. The DSM-5 is mainly based on studies done on white males (as with like 99% of healthcare in Canada/US). We still really haven’t gotten to a point of even trying to understand how things like gender, race, environment, etc can effect how a disability presents. It’s more socially acceptable for white males to present symptoms of a disability as well. Females and POC are more likely to learn to mask at a younger age which can delay diagnoses as well.
