This, I work hard until my tasks are done. My boss couldn’t care less about my work hours. Be there for meetings and get your work done then way that works best for you, if that means starting at 2pm and finishing late, then do it. True flexible hours jobs are amazing. Same, I have a couple of routine tasks that require two people but they can be done in a few hours in the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but morning, otherwise I’m free to arrive and depart as I deem fit so long as the job gets done and I don’t take the piddle with dossing about or taking overtime. I work in an Aldi warehouse. I’m contracted for a certain amount of hours monthly. It averages around 5 hours an evening, but some days I could work 7-8 and other days 4-5 hours a shift. We have a set start time but not a set finish. I never have this issue as we are always really busy where I work. The last 30 mins are spent trying to get our work finished on time.

Today i asked someone to train me on something in Excel that i wasn’t 100% sure how to do. Both myself and my colleague were exhausted and this made it look like we were being productive but in reality we were just pissing about with paragraph margins in spreadsheets. Jump on LinkedIn and read all the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but articles from CEO’s about how going back to the office is a good thing. At least you can chuckle whilst wasting your time. I work in a warehouse and if we stop picking orders before 4:55pm we get a file-note. Five file-notes and we get a disciplinary hearing. Yay. Our whippet boy is the cuddliest dog I have ever met and will lie in wait for you to get comfy on the sofa before getting comfy in your lap
I archive mine so that they are no longer in my inbox, but if I want to recall what I was up to on 22nd March 2016 (see other post) I can find them. I assume this is aimed at non-customer facing workers as the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but last 30 minutes in those jobs are rarely quiet enough to skive. If I’m done I just go home. Arbitrarily staying until 5pm or whatever “finish time” is I just don’t understand and I’ll never make someone under my charge do that. If you’re wiggling the mouse to stop the screen locking (and showing away on Outlook etc.), just rest something on one of the keyboard keys and it’ll stay active whilst you are really AFK. Or google “powershell script to keep Teams active”, the one I use just presses numlock every 3 minutes.. and no fear that it’ll accidentally answer a teams call or anything.

I just rest something on the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but – tile in the top right part of the keyboard. Click on the taskbar first then nothing will accidentally open. I have some (40ish) small files in my desk drawer that I keep alphabetised. Every now and then I’ll shuffle them up. If I need to kill 20-30 minutes, I’ll rearrange them into alphabetical order and maybe look through one or two. Otherwise I pick a previous date at random and go through my sent emails from that day. I don’t know why but I find it really interesting to see what I was up to on, say, 22 march 2016. It looks like I spent the majority of the day discussing the particulars of a project with a client (quite a boring read) and then asked one of my senior colleagues for some advice with something I didn’t know. The good thing is, I now know what I was asking about (which document some standards and specifications were listed in).
Check the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but traffic. My. Commute is only 10 minutes or so but it doesn’t take much to double it or even triple it. I also check bidb.uk to see the progress of the Toob broadband rollout in my area. I clearly need something more interesting to do! Cycle mechanic, I start moving my tools from my bench to the board and then have a little wipe down then spend 5-10 mins getting changed for my ride commute God, it’s mad to think we all clock watched til 5:30 just a few years ago. All too scared to look like a shirker even though we all knew we’d given up for the day at half three Usally have to work and leave as soon as im done (work in theatre backstage on shows so don’t really have a choice) I don’t. I work until 3pm, its a game changer. The afternoon flies and by the time I feel myself starting to lag its time to log off. When I was in the office I used to finish at 6pm and everyone else finished at 5 or 5:30. The phones turned off at 5:30 so that last 30 minutes was my only guaranteed period of peace and quiet during the day. It was my most productive part of the day knowing I wasn’t going to be interrupted by an impromptu conference call or some inane question every 15 to 30 minutes. On the days I had nothing to do I’d go for a shit.
Keep working and pray to the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but headset gods that I don’t get a call that will take me past finishing time. If it’s not busy, we might be allowed to hit “not ready” at 5 to the hour to avoid getting stuck late Delete old emails 1 by 1… then go into deleted deleted emails and delete them 1 by 1 again.. never delete all, computers still clicking.. I’m also on tiktok at the same time… job done xx I normally just go into the warehouse and have a little clean up. By the time I’ve done a quick round I’ll have a quick cuppa and a chat with the bosses before heading off. This reminds me of two people I worked with. We had flexi time, so in a four week period, we had to accrue 140 hours of work. If you reached 147 hours, you could have an extra day off during the next four week period. These two people would spend the last half an hour of the four week period checking if they had reached 147 hours. All their belongings would be packed, and coats on but just paced to and fro until the time clock reached the magic 147. Being so blatant felt like time theft.
My tactic, if I needed to waste a few minutes, was to do some filing. Each item doesn’t take long, and you can abandon the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but rest as soon as it is acceptable to leave. Nothing like fucking around til 16.55 and then noticing all your unwashed cups & crap from throughout the day My boss is quite good if she notices we have no meetings left or admin she will send me home early as she knows I have a long drive home. If I was in my old office I’d go find someone to who was also walking the office aimlessly to make us look busy I’d advise anyone with this mindset to get a new job if at all possible, wishing time away is possibly the slowest way through life! Perfect time to poop. If that doesn’t take too long (I have IBS so varies) then I will prep some jobs ready for the next day or just look busy. I don’t take a lunch break and get to work early so I don’t feel too bad for taking some me time before I leave. The last job I had that was cLock driven (FFS autocorrect!) was way back in the mid 90s, which had a shift change. If I’ve got nothing else to do that can’t be put off until tomorrow I just leave. Might pop in to a pub for a cheeky beer. I work in a microbrewery situated in a warehouse, my office is the taproom so I’ve often had a beer before I even turn my computer off
Tidy my desk, wash my cup, go to the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but loo, dry my cup, stare out the kitchen window, wander slowly back to my desk, unlock computer – pretend I’m reading something really important. Log out at 4 on the dot and let it to my car On Fridays I book out an hour for CPD. Read a magazine/news articles or watch some YouTube videos. It’s still technically work but my computer and phone are off. Turning on the dishwasher, turning down the heating. Giving the plants a gulp of water. Basically anything apart from work that keeps my colleagues happy My highest workload always comes in right before home time. I’m usually tidying up my office, maybe dusting or hoovering, any dishes, filing paperwork, clearing emails, tending to the plants etc. My office is restricted access and I don’t need a cleaner but I always have a high standard of keeping it clean and tidy.
I usually save up the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but smallest, easiest to complete tasks to the end of the day so I can do them all in one hit. No chance of running over time with them. I’m always down to the mins and end up switching the laptop off whilst 17 windows are still open; accepting total defeat for another crazy day! Asking a colleague what they’re up to tonight. They’ll either have a long answer or a short one so you can actually have a conversation. I have a 40 minute drive along country lanes so I often waste 5-10 mins on the loo as I know I’ll need it as soon as I leave the office When I was working, I used to just doss about with other co-workers I got on with and did as much cleaning as possible before we stopped cooking (chef). When I finally had enough of the horseshit company I worked for I used to listen to Pink Floyd’s Animals for the last 40 minutes of every day Time tracking, trying to make it equal to 8 hours exactly, clean my mug, chat with my colleagues, go to the loo, check the train times, and pack up. Clean up the office, get stuff ready for the next shift (fill the kettle, get out fresh milk and their mugs etc) and if all else fails, go find a patient to chat with.
it’s really about culture and attitude. I read about two urban planners, one canadian the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but other swedish. They asked how winter was going. Canadian said it was terrible, Swede said theirs was great. They were talking about the same conditions in both cases. A lot of people complain about the weather, but since we can’t do anything about it, choose to find something to enjoy about it. We have been to the darkest depts of misery, with dread and hopelessness in the 18 hours of darkness. So we’re euphoric and extatic when the days get longer again. They propably ask us in the spring or summer In danish weather forecasts, they tell us everyday how much longer the day has become since the day before. It gives us lots of joy . And lots of really boring smalltalk. If you meet a dane, just talk about the weather. We fucking love it.
It has nothing to do with the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but weather. It’s about the culture and the quality of life. Quality of life is the most important. I live in the United States and the quality of life is horrible in terms of quality time you get with your family or even oneself. Everything is always on the go, we don’t stop. Similar to living in a big city and smaller town. You are not wasting time driving everywhere, commutes are usually 20 minutes max anywhere you want to go.You have time, and time in life is much more meaningful and valuable then we think. We need time for ourselves and our loved ones and this means valuable time. In many of these countries that’s valued. Here in the U.S. it is not. It is looked down upon to take time off in many different ways.
I think the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but WFH trend since Covid has changed the American experience a bit. I have been Hybrid/WFH since about 20110 and moved to 100% WFH in 2017. I know my life has been alot less stressful and we managed to get down to one car PMT and an ebike… So alot less driving, more $$ in my pocket and I get Wayyyyyy more time with family… YAY….. I find that having the time to take 10 mins and throw laundry in or tidy up the kitchen on breaks frees up the afternoon and weekends from all the odd things you have to get done. Good stuff I’m noticing the days are getting longer, and I’m feeling a sense of dread coming on. I don’t like summer at all. I’ve read about a theory, that long dark days enhances social behaviour, bonding people more together, and a more social life is a more happy life. i have no idea. i live in supposedly the happiest country on earth but i’m (more) miserable every winter. but the snow helps! it’s so much more brighter with it than without it, and i imagine that the netherlands has almost as little daylight, but doesn’t have snow to reflect the tiny amount of light for as long.
Because light lamps are cheap and all of the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but things that come with living in the Scandinavian region are what really counts for happiness. Yes, it might be worth trying a different one. They do seem to help a lot of people! If it doesn’t, talk to your doctor about it. I have lived in the Netherlands and in the US, and I noticed a difference in how happiness is defined. Netherlands has extremely cloudy skies for a large part of the year. In the US, happiness is all about having something. Affording a large pick-up truck, affording a meal at Red Lobster, affording a trip to Disneyland with your kids, being a boss at work, being an entrepreneur. In Netherlands, happiness is about the state of being. Not having to worry about medical expenses. Not having to worry about leaving your bike unchained. Not having to worry about walking alone on a street at 2 am. Not having to worry about saving for kids’ college. And this is what Americans tend to not understand, since they are brought up in a very materialistic, consumerist culture. In Netherlands, happiness is about the state of being. Not having to worry about medical expenses. Not having to worry about leaving your bike unchained. Not having to worry about walking alone on a street at 2 am. Not having to worry about saving for kids’ college. I live in Texas and I’m pretty sure I have seasonal affective disorder for summer. It’s so depressing and relentless. Before I even realize it’s getting cooler my mood starts to improve, December-January is whe I really feel like “myself”.
Because the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but dark is associated with being all cosied up snug, nice, quiet, and peaceful. The sun on the other hand you’re hot, sweaty, you smell, squinting trying to see anything, headaches from the brightness, get caught by a drive by reflection now you’re blind, more people are outside, being all friendly trying to talk to you, it’s awful. There’s absolutely zero upside to there being more sun than the minimum need for plants and stuff. I’ve lived my whole life in Scandinavia and it really doesn’t bother me at all, I guess we are adapted to the darkness Vitamin D supplements help if it’s a seasonal issue. I live in Germany, which has similar weather, and the one December where I skipped out on this, I got some really bad seasonal depression. However, within about a week of resuming the supplements, I felt a lot better I live in a place that has 7 hours of daylight during the winter, but its usually 7 hours of blue skies! Even though we get -40 Celsius temperatures, if you eat lunch outside you can usually get enough sunshine to feel pretty cheerful.
In contrast, I’ve lived somewhere where the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but shortest day was 9 hours and the coldest temperature was -5 but because it was near a lake we would have endless weeks of cloudy weather. This was way harder for me to handle. Not everybody fells the same way about cold or dark weather, as a portuguese it would absolutely kill me to be 2 weeks without a sunny day but I have family that is living in the UK and absolutely loves it there (the kind of people that hate the beach and hot weather). I love to visit them and absolutely loved all european countries I visited, including all the Nordic countries but I think I could only live in the south, my favorites being Greece, Croatia, Italy, Spain and of course my shitty (I can say it I’m portuguese) little sunny Portugal. We lived for trips home and away to sunnier places, for holidays. When offered the chance to go back for work years later, we both said no.
What did help and make it bearable in the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but beginning were sun lamps, Verilux Happy Lamps, buying brighter light bulbs; adding more lamps to the darkest rooms, sitting near brighter windows for meals. Being outdoors as often as possible when it wasn’t raining too hard; avoiding eating or drinking too much or too heavily. Keeping to a routine sleep-wake cycle. Being active in the snow, when or if it came or stayed, and trying new sports with the kids. Spending time in museums or going to comedy shows or plays that during sunnier days, we never seemed to have time for. Making and taking time for friends and new hobbies. Go all out for seasonal holidays. Buy decent boots or all-weather gear to stay dry and warm. Go hike. Take a train trip. Gather positive people around you and halve the problem by sharing time together. Check in on each other and do things in groups, like raclette, fondue, hot pot, or skating or skiing parties vs. always doing things alone or sitting online.
Well I think people who live in southwest America where it’s just 24hrs of sun and 900% temperatures are pretty nuts just based on what I hear, not that much but I think they’re nuts and I’m in Brooklyn. Maybe people tend to find ways toward satisfaction more in their home and when spring, summer, fall comes around it’s a big boost of different happiness that they might eventually just have a different version of in winter. I have tons of different reasons I love every season, winter-snow of course and brighter stars, spring-everything growing again, summer-chaotic thunderstorms and the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but sounds of crickets and whatnot at night, autumn-bright color dying trees and coffee tastes even better somehow.
I love cloudy days in winter. It brings me peace, tranquility, and calmness. Once summer comes, I enjoy the Jackson Merrill Merrill Madness Swag Head shirt it is in the first place but sun and the warmth of it. I’m from Iceland, long dark nights like half the year (or more) Pretty sure most of us are clinically depressed, we just hide it by drinking a lot. I am Dutch as well, it used to bother me a lot in the past. Now not so much, my attitude towards “bad” weather shifted I guess. It’s just a matter of sitting it out until the signs of early spring appear again. And you’ll appreciate the months with nice weather more after the dark and gloomy times. I suppose I like the contrast. If you’re really down it might help to take supplemental vitamin D. Look it up. Dark and rainy is the worst. That’s the middle-Europe winter, that’s not what it’s supposed to be in North. When the winter is “right” it’s snowy and can be bright, especially in the beginning of the year. There’s only a few hours of daylight but it’s good. Rest is dark but you can just be cozy at home.
