Yeah I live with in laws and I’ve seen the I’ve Loved My Class For 100 Days of School Teacher Valentines Day Apple T-Shirt but in fact I love this struggles with my nephew. He won’t eat, even food he likes and it’s well known he likes it. It turns into this whole routine and dance each evening. He’s great with breakfast and lunch but dinner time he gets weird. He’s served an appropriate sized meal for his size (similar in size to what he eats at breakfast and lunch) but he gets distracted by everything and doesn’t want to focus on his food. Then it gets cold and he’s less willing to eat it because it’s cold. Then he’s sneaking out of bed at night and claims he’s hungry and that’s why he keeps getting up and not because he’s trying to squeeze in more playtime. I feel for his parents. It really is hard to get kids to eat a lot of the time. There needs to be better resources out there to help parents because hell if I’d know what to do. I love my niece but while I am not child free, watching how hard it is to raise a kid who is so sweet and good is inching me closer to child free by the day.

Kids should always be served a small meal and offered more if they ask. They should be taught they can ask for more. Forcing NEVER ends well, for anyone. I grew up with that, and it was completely miserable. It didn’t help that my mother’s cooking could gag a buzzard. I told my wife that I would not do that and if she wanted to do “food drama” I would not support her in it. How do you convey health consequences to a child? I mean other than telling them they will go blind if they dont eat their carrots. Age appropriate conversations. A bit older – “eat too many sweets and you’ll feel sick”, “don’t eat vegetables and it will be hard to poop” (kids love talking about poop). And so on. My parents did something similar. We had no food in the house except meal times. Breakfast (sometimes) and dinner. The fridge was locked, the pantry was locked If we didn’t want to eat what was for dinner we sat at the table till bed time. If we were still hungry we could ask to finish dinner leftovers. We were never without, but it affected me down the line in little ways. I started to steal food from friends’ houses and hide food in the house. Still have an issue with people touching or finding “my food” as an adult. If I cook a healthy meal and my kids don’t eat it, they will absolutely come back to the kitchen for a bunch of junk 30 minutes later.
