I’m a second-line manager overseeing roughly 70 people worldwide. I don’t have time for this shit and would never think about doing it. Now that things are easing up I personally find I’m losing lots of time for travel, mainly between offices around the country but it’s just another kind of adjustment. Hybrid is here to stay as well as full remote for some Had a job where I used to play Xbox and ping pong all day. Employer knew about it and didn’t care, considering that I was doing all of this at work on the console and ping pong table that they had provided. Good times. I’m in a weird predicament when it comes to this. I’m a full time employee at a job where we go through busy seasons and slow seasons. During our slow seasons, I have literally nothing to do. Occasionally we’ll get assigned a special project but those don’t take long at all. There are stretches where I don’t even open my laptop for multiple days in a row. It has been this way since we started WFH full time. My boss knows my partner and I have basically nothing to do and is very cool with it (my boss is awesome) but if the executive team starts to track this info, I’m not even sure what to do to defend myself Manager here in tech consulting firm. I encourage my people to work wherever they feel comfortable – be it at home or the office or a cafe, whatever. For as long as the job gets done, I don’t care.

Actually look at their work output and recognize what their team is actually doing? Absurd! I don’t get to work from home as often, but when I am able to I get more done in less time. Why? Because there are no distractions that I do not have complete control over. No one stops by to chat, there is no waiting to use the bathroom, there is no waiting to use the printer, there is no having to leave to grab lunch, and if the internet goes down I can fix it, there is no waiting for IT to show up and fix it. It’s not about productivity, it’s about control and appearance. Employers have always been able to monitor work computers. I’d still rather be at home. No commuting, no water cooler chatting, comfy clothes and more time with my family sounds way better than being in a cubicle in an office. btw for anybody wanting to appear ‘active’ on your messaging app – just open a powerpoint and hit present. leave it in presentation mode in the background. problem solved.
