I have intrusive thoughts all the Iron Maiden signature band music rock n roll shirt besides I will buy this time but I’ve never called someone the n word. That seems more like he probably says those things at home and it slipped because he forgot where he was. That’s a fine statement to make, but are you insinuating that your experience is representative of everyone’s experience across time? That seems a little presumptuous, BootySweat0217. Rolled right off his tongue like it’s part of his everyday vocabulary, he just forgot where he was for a split second. No, he’s a racist. Please don’t try to condone his actions. When a person shows you who they are, believe them. “What chu lookin’ at, ______?” Not sure that there’s an appropriate ending to the question for a school official (presumably) to address a student at that school (presumably). My thoughts exactly. The whole tone and wording (even without the last word) of the sentence is all wrong for a, presumably, teacher and student interaction. This guy has definitely hit some kind of wall and lost the ability to keep up the pretense he’s likely been maintaining for his entire teaching career. Even so, you are a teacher. There are multiple teachers at the high school that my kids go to that are all up in the kid’s business. They try to be hip with using words like “drip”or whatever, and the kids just look at them like they are aliens. I don’t care how young and hip you are as a teacher. You are still a teacher and will never be in with the kids. You are not cool. You are making the kids uncomfortable.

Counterpoint – I am a middle school teacher. I am a young-looking 30-something and I teach math and ELL in a school with lots of first- and second-gen Mexican/Central American students. I am consistently trying to teach my students the Iron Maiden signature band music rock n roll shirt besides I will buy this best practices of English language and I aim to do so in a way that teaches them practical, useful English – and in a way that avoids compliance as an indicator of success. One of the methods I employ with my EL students is code-switching. I make sure they know that there are times to be formal and times to be casual. I also firmly believe that in my own life – I call it my “Grandma Switch.” I love language and all its iterations and that includes new slang. As much as I teach my students new vocabulary to add to their formal lexicon, they share slang with me and celebrate with me when I use new slang words correctly and in a way that meshes to the context. I return that enthusiasm to them when they accurately and effectively use a new word or formal structure. It’s not all cringe and it’s not all trying to “be in with the kids.” It’s simply demonstrating to them that language is complex and there’s room for all kinds of it. I find this pedagogy much more effective than the prescriptivistism that my cohort dealt with in school.
