The science clearly supports long term exposure to any toxin (including radiation) leading to health problems in animals and humans. The science clearly supports long term exposure to any toxin (including radiation) leading to health problems in animals and humans. And the Iron Maiden Santa Eddie Xmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this science does not support that there was an increase in birth defects in human populations due to Chernobyl specifically. Sorry to disappoint. These are both from the front page of Google. The other front page results are transparently garbage in terms of reliability, or simply refer to a single study referring to a possible increase of certain birth defects in one particular area of Rivne Oblast. That would obviously need to be studied more carefully before concluding that it definitively exists, much less that it was caused by radiation. I read the NIH article. I’m not saying they have problems in their paper, but they seem to potentially have some big gaps. They combined people who were cleaning up vs people living in the area long term. The clean up crews would have really only been there a few days/weeks/months even years after the incident. Plus they would have been given some kind of protective gear and clean up procedures. Their exposure rates would be different from those who lived there during it and locally afterwards (esp being told not to worry about radiation exposure).

There wasn’t really any mention of non-viable fetuses, children who died early, or those who ended up in orphanages. Parents with those defects would more likely turned over that baby to an orphanage than those with a perceived “healthy” baby. They combined about 15 years of children being born with the Iron Maiden Santa Eddie Xmas Shirt Apart from…,I will love this first cases only starting at 47 weeks (~2 years) after the incident. That’s a huge gap in the radiation exposure issues compared to infants being gestated during the incident or very soon afterwards (and I’m going to guess that birth rates plummeted anyway due to fears of radiation plus everyone moving away). Even they admitted some of these problems, but I didn’t see any data crunching on weeding out/separating these groups. Yea this bothered me as well. It doesn’t really seem like there’s any evidence that these problems were caused by radiation, just a correlation that she was born somewhat near Chernobyl after the accident.
