I’ve been on cruises before. Fun for the first few days but around the week mark they start to get old. Can’t imagine living on one. Starlink has a huge lag factor. They try very hard to keep the lid on this with marketing, but especially in the middle of the ocean when your connection has to hop across multiple satellites before it hits a ground station AND that data pipe is shared by the whole boat, your video meeting will have insane lag. Plus, who knows which ground station you’re going to hit. Assuming your call is in America. If you’re in the Pacific and you hit a Japanese ground station, that signal is going to have to go across one of the wires in the Pacific.

Starlink is a huge step forward for internet access on cruise ships. Your arguments on latency are overblown although you are correct in pointing out that even a high speed link can be saturated if it’s shared by too many users. It’s not perfect, but it is a tremendous step forward for people in regions where no other form of high speed internet is available – including being in the middle of the ocean, and yes many people who work remotely use it for Zoom, etc. without problems. O3b mPower will probably turn out to be a better alternative for cruise ships short to mid-term due to the improved capacity. And you’re not using Starlink routers which fuck up TCP queues and buffers resulting in the insane latency under congestion the other user mentioned. It’s the secret torpedo tube. Hold your breath if they encounter pirates, b/c you’re the first (and best) line of defense.
