I’m surprised it’s that low. Most immigrants to any country, let alone a mere 20%, have unrealistic expectations. Food, drink, TV and movies. Even between a South Korean and any other culture you are going to have differences but these people defecting haven’t seen any of the shows you like, haven’t heard any of the music you like. Weirdly enough a foreigner who has heard Gangnam Style a few times is probably more caught up on the joke than a North Korean. Then you have the worst part and this is just incredibly sad is the difference in education and work. In North Korea you aren’t going get the same experience as a South Korean, so when you are going into the workplace you are starting entirely from scratch. If you are a young person that would be fine because you can go to school and catch up but if you are above 30 or whatever you just aren’t going to be useful beyond serving coffee or other untrained jobs. The South Korean gov might have a load of supports for defectors but it’s incredibly hard for both sides.

High cost of living, high competition for well-paying jobs, dog eat dog capitalist society. It’s hard enough for people who were born in the system. I can’t imagine how hard it would be for someone trying to integrate when coming in from an entirely different culture. The South has the highest rate of suicide for a developed country and fourth over all. I don’t know the exact reasons apart from pressures to succeed academically and then financially making people believe life is all about a very narrow part of the whole. I can see how the South might appear to have taken a very wrong turn at some stage. The SK’s prejudgement and shitty policies are one thing, but I still think it’s more of psychological trauma coming from being in abusive household of a state – and waiting for immediate happy ending after plotting and succeeding in escaping from it. It never came, and many of these people are mentally disturbed and need help, while SK isn’t only unhelpful, but silently hostile towards refugees. I’d imagine I would be crashed if I did so, and even regret my escape, even if the outcome is better than living in NK.
