I was raised thinking that going to university meant you could have a good job and life. I have a job where I make well above 2x the median income for my area, my wife has an “okay” job but doesn’t make a ton. We still have to be pretty strategic and careful about what we spend. Vacation? Not a chance. Maybe stay one or two nights at a cheap destination, but no way can I afford to take my family of 4 on a weeklong trip. I keep thinking about how this is the case, and then I realize the absurd prices of necessities, plus mortgage, utilities, vehicles, gas, etc.

Your dad had government job with good benifits and pension and your mom worked for a college so free tuition cuts down on them trying to save. My friend has doctorate but is a ‘meter maid’ (started part time to help education expenses) bennies and pension to give to good up 20 years later. I was at church today (Parent made me go) and they were talking about how we don’t want to work and how we were created to work and that you must remember each time you do your job, you are doing it for God… And I was just thinking do they even know how it is for most people working? You work and you have nothing to show for it because it has to go to needs. Like you are already depressed enough now you go to church and they depress you even more I’m only mid-30s. My wife only works part-time and, for the last few months, hasn’t worked at all actually due to some medical issues. We have all of those things except the jet ski. But do have 2 boats compared to one. 4 kids at home. It’s called not doing dumb shit with your money (but in fairness boats are doing dumb shit with your money). We go on vacations, we go to concerts, and all three of our older kids are in sports. We pay the bills, we throw a good percentage into 401k and some in savings, and THEN we do whatever the hell else we want. It’s called a budget. Learn to make one. Live within your means and stop blaming everyone else for your stupid decisions.
