i would probably make it clear that you’re not interested in increased responsibilities without compensation, but that you’d be interested in hearing a proposal that is unambigious about the I’m here for the roller coaster retro T-Shirt but in fact I love this time frame, targets, and expected compensation. if they do spell those things out, then a grace period to ensure that you’re the right fit isn’t a terrible idea. depending on how much you want the promotion… which you can’t know until they give you specifics. I would be clear that you have no interest in being an expendable, free stopgap while they search for a different candidate. Get them to document when they will increase pay and what the KPIs you need to hit to meet those pay increases will be. Ask them to tier the responsibility according to the pay grade increases. If they are serious about supporting you to grow into the role they should be able to do this for you. You were hired for a position for x amount. Taking on another role, and likely still being expected to do your current role is not okay. Get in writing what the salary increase will be, and that your old job duties are no longer your responsibility. If they refuse, refuse to do the extra work.

“I’m pretty sure that I’ll be overwhelmed with the I’m here for the roller coaster retro T-Shirt but in fact I love this responsibilities and won’t be able to do an effective job…unless I’m properly compensated with title and pay. If you can’t do that, maybe you’ should find someone else for the role. It’s been said here, but I want to echo it – please don’t accept this. You just firmly state that if you are doing a different job, you need to be paid for it. They clearly have the budget since that person used to be here. It’s not worth dragging this out and building this resentment that you will eventually have. Either stand firm on your worth or prepare to leave. A similar experience happened in my workplace. An Assistant director position opened up and they wanted several internal supervisors to take turns in the role in order to ‘get experience’ and ‘try out the position’. There was no supplemental pay for the work. At the end of the period, although they were highly qualified & respected, most all the supervisors had left the company and the position went to none of them. Be careful. Document as much as you can. Update your resume as much as possible both now and if you learn experience from the role.
