Sadly even with stellar medical care the final outcome is often death or permanent disability. The treatment of shock/sepsis/trauma is a massive and complex subject. It was my life for 32 years. Thankfully I’m retired now. Yes you’re technically correct. I was taught in medic school that everyone dies of shock. Sometimes it’s instantaneous I was in anaphylactic shock last week due to a newfound bee allergy. I’ve been stung a dozen times over the years, but apparently my body decided that it had had enough of bee venom. Thankfully I was out on a bicycle ride with my wife when it happened, so she was there to call 911 as I started convulsing. I’m a healthy, reasonably fit, mid-30’s dude, and after I passed out it took two hours and a small mountain of epinephrine before anyone was sure I’d survive. In my experience it is less than that, but I only saw them in the ICU after they made it to the hospital and through the ED. Out of hospital is a different ballgame. Timely recognition of shock has a fairly decent prognosis. It’s why there’s such an emphasis on time to treatment in guidelines such as surviving sepsis. You either got really lucky or had an amazing medical team, or both. Once septic shock kicks in, that’s usually it.

It’s even more surprising that I recovered so well. While it was a close call, I didn’t end up losing any digits or limbs, I even went on to finish my PhD. It’s because they lost so much blood that their already injured body couldn’t keep going. Septic shock is quick to develop and kill you, without immediate intervention. Most hospitals are now very aware of this and once it is thought, even with a shadow of a doubt, sepsis is setting in, the sepsis pathway is initiated to get things rolling fast. Unfortunately sometimes not fast enough.
